  • Aragorn on bass...

  • There's only one Chan. Awesome singer!!! ;)

  • what a sexy sexy lady

  • Great song and fantastic performance by Cat (Chan) Power.

Anyone says what the effect used in the lead guitar in this song?

  • Great, great performance! One of my favorites.

P.S. Anyone knows what's the pedal the guitarist's using?

  • ..for this song there should be a love button !!! --> ♥ button

  • I think this is a song that cannot be modified to live if it steps out too much out of the original version. The deluxe edition is really the best one.

  • @2011favoritos let the woman/artist perform her music HER way.... she did write it after all.... or do you think maybe you could have done it better??

  • @moonchild678 how fucking insightfull!your obviously full of wisdom...

  • Dayum, Mr. Keyboardist -- change your hairstyle. Seriously man.

  • I just don't like it when she does the pantomime thing. I like her 'uneasy' way of moving, it's charming, but this is just too much--seems forced and it distracts from the song. I agree--this theatre isn't the best place to express this kind of song. Although 1 of my fav live Cat Power performances of all time is 'Maybe Not' sung live on Letterman. And this is coming from someone who LOVES Chan Marshall. I'd marry her in a second, no questions asked. And I'm a woman.

  • Did I see some life at 3.30? Shock!

  • Chan Marshall lo eres todo , tu poder felino estremece mi cuerpo mis oidos.

  • Man she ok but you have to hear this new artist Nayo Jones singing search making powert moves

  • @moonchild678 UR A DICK SHE HAD HER TIME FORTUNATELY SHE DIED BUT U SHOULD SAY THAT SHE WAS STILL GOD AS A MUSICIAN

  • WHATS FUCKED UP I HAVE A METAL HEART

  • She's got a weird 1960's stage singing style; but she is HOT! Yeah!

  • EVERYTHING IN ONE

  • Comment removed

  • I agree her earlier performance on Letterman was much better.

  • I don't like this band with Chan, they drag her down.

  • amazing song, amazing woman!

  • She does over-gesticulate and all, but her voice is terrific. Don't agree at all that there's no emotion in this performance. I think it's pretty powerful.

  • I think the performance is let down by the keyboardists haircut (otherwise it's brilliant).

Also, is that Jim White on the drums? Everytime there's a video of an amazing performance by someone he seems to appear behind the kit.

  • increíble! chapeau!

  • I find the gesticulations a bit contrived in this performed, but I've always really liked the way she re-made this song musically. I'm in the minortiy of Cat Power fans that appreciate Chan's step away from minimalism and towards professional musicianship and traditional blues. This is a cool version of the song. Thanks for posting.

  • 13 people! go have some sex immediately

  • my new favorite artist :)

  • @eislean

Is that supposed to be a bad thing? it's not like I'm defending someone who is not worth it...she's just the perfect type of artist for me, that's it, no matter what she does, it makes me feel someting, just like with the Doors, the only 2 that give me that feeling I would say.

I saw her 5 times and met her too, it helps.

  • Can never go wrong with Jim White on drums.

  • This is one forceful rendition - she was nervous before that gig and this fired her up.

  • this is epic

  • love her

  • There's no emotion there, she's just "Performing". did she go to "Acting School"? She has a Good Voice but needs to go with that and forget the "Performance Acting Off Key Sh*t". Get famous for your Voice Cat and not your "Performances".

  • Years ago she would open for bigger acts at a place called BMT's pizza in Atlanta. The first 2 times I saw a Catpower show she had her back to the crowd the entire time. I just think it's cool she went from being terrified of a crowd at a pizza joint. To being so in your face on Letterman. Regardless of which the better version of the song is. I mean of course "the better" its gonna be on a record.

  • @Jaysthename

It's your opinion, it's ok, you could say it's not better but why say that it's weak, that's what I don't understand.

She made dozens of covers from other artists and the cover is so different and many times better, so why not see this as a own cover of herself, it can be interesting to hear different versions of the same song I think. Not sure the Ed Sullivan theater would be a place to sing Metal Heart the way she used to do it if you see what I mean.

  • @Jaysthename

I find her voice so warm there, that's enough for me to feel a good emotion.

And there are so many live songs from her where she destroys the song by stopping in the middle of it and people can still be attracted by these kinds of songs... ;-) but yes, the original is often the best version.

  • @ThousandThrills Personally I wouldn't call it 'weak', but I went looking for a live version of this song to hear her really let go and you could hear it in the backing, especially in the guitar and piano but not for Chan. The song, lyrics, and the great writing behind it promises so much power, which is why I love it so much, but I don't think she ever reaches her high with it (although she may be high), in the moon pix version or the jukebox one, or in this live performance; which is annoying.

  • @Jaysthename Just so you know I'm 100% with you on this one. No disrespect to Chan, I think she's awesome, but this was an awkward performance for me. Of course she's not the wild young adult she once was, but all that hand waving and snarling seems totally disconnected from the emotional intensity of the song.

  • @Jaysthename looks like shes on smack .. wired movrs are all drug moves . shocking waist .

  • @ratrodralphy nah, she just has stage fright.

  • @Jaysthename You brought the negativity, that's weak. Its her song she wrote it not you so ultimately you fail!

  • @Jaysthename

Chan is now more Dusty Springfield than Kurt Cobain so get over it. She has grown up and so should you. Can't stay in your 20s forever dude.

  • @Jaysthename Weak performance? i really liked that version - and one of the most emotion packed performances i have seen in a long time. Wow - incredible lass. So, I wont shoot you down, but i will disagree!

  • @Jaysthename I never heard her or saw her before tonight, but I was totally captivated by this performance. She's beautiful, and she's got a great whisky voice, but it was perhaps the surprising and unexpected way she moved, the way she crouched to deliver the song, that lent it its power. Never seen anyone quite like her.

  • @Jaysthename Likely she was just drunk.

  • @Jaysthename weird that this got negatived into oblivion, but hes totally right. i still want to have her babies but the original is rawer, better. btw, does anyone remember her having crazy stagefright? sigh, i guess she aged ten years. oh CRAP I AGED TEN YEARS.

  • @hanumanuhanu She over came her stage fright. A lot of people get it. Everyone has to find their nitche and she found hers. She's spectacular and to see her band perform is inviting.

  • @Jaysthename I didn't really like this version either. It made me think she'd started drinking again.

  • I want + need + gotta + desire to LOVE HER ... so pretty from A to Z <3

  • totally outstanding!

  • The original version without the piano is better, more raw and emotional

  • Wanker.

  • this drummer is fucking hilarious in a lame way

  • I'm not enjoying her goofy actions. I listed to her before I watched her performances. Totally not what I had in mind. I thought she would be more majestic live.

  • @AlohaMia so sorry .

  • @AlohaMia - She suffers terribly from anxiety... look again and you'll recognise that she's near terrified. Has been known for years to have crippling attacks of it on stage and never return. It's really awful for her, but she's brave and works through. Not a natural performer by any means, but a haunting, unearthly talent. I love her.

  • @keerza Ohhh. I just thought she had a drinking problem - that's it...Poor Chan :( I'll rather listen to her not watch her. She is definitely unique. I can learn to love her performances...

  • "What's the deal with these guys?"... too funny... wonder what he meant by that... the band nailed that song; smokey guitars blending perfectly with Chan's delicious smokey vocals! This is my favorite version of Metal Heart. Thanks for posting!

  • The breathy quality to the vocals and her stage mannerisms remind me quite a bit of Mary Margaret O'Hara...another unique talent. Well done,

  • "it's a group"

  • Letterman "Huh, what's the Deal with these Guys?" Hahahaha great performance

  • this song means a lot to me

  • Great song... One of my favorites!

  • she is so sexy!

  • I love when he kisses her on the top of the hard at the end. So cute!

  • Incredible !!!!!!!!! I love how David Letterman won't let go of her hand despite Cat's trying to get away. Does he go to kiss her at the end?!

  • @BrettGleasonMusic

Hes so rude about her band/her friends though :(

  • WOW...what a performance. Every time I listen to one of her songs it brings inspiration to my life...and if I could attend just one of her shows I bet I might reach some kind of enlightenment!

  • WOW...what a performance. Every time I listen to one of her songs it brings inspiration to my life...and if I could attend just one of her shows I bet I might reach some kind of enlightenment!

  • does anyone know where she really uses her voice?

    like...extends he voice ability?

  • @BubbaLu123 She doesn't really do that, it's not her style. It's either the mellow bluesy voice or shouting. It's a part of her charm. She has a very expressive voice without doing vocal acrobatics and I think her songs would be ruined if that was added to them.

  • @ThousandThrills I hope you don't mind me posting a Video Response to this! I know you've probably already saw it, but go check out the upload & tell me if you think I did it some justice or not?

  • @madeyes4u

Good full length video , thanks, not sure what's the relation with this one but it's Chan and we love her so there's never enough of her...

  • @ThousandThrills There's really no relation except for (like you said...) it's Chan. Really, I love this live version of "metal heart" & it's the only reason I come back here & watch it. I've probably clocked in a good 30+ views Lol

  • @madeyes4u

Yes, one of her best performances. Don't forget to check often my Living Proof video of her. It's just as good. I don't understand the big difference in clicks. That was a couple of weeks just before I met her the first time so that other video will always be special to me.

I wish I could make more videos for you Chan...yeah I hope you get to read this one day. lol

God Bless America for Chan on this Nov 2nd...

  • Chan just emotes! Can't get much more chicken skin than this after watching this performance. Exceptional!!!!!

  • She has evolved so much over the years...from the 90s alternative scene to a soulful, bluesy musician. I like old Chan. I like new Chan. I like Chan period.

  • @hellorinis It's all at one level. There is no real arc to the song, and music is not all about channeling emotion. You need to write a good song first.

  • Chan Marshall is so young and but so much life. A genuine legend.

  • Viva The Cat !

  • what a wierdo...i like it!!!

  • she's a wonderful singer songwriter, such a pretty voice

  • Can anyone make out what was said between David Letterman and Chan at the end? Thanks- biggest front row fan- Kat

  • Can anyone make out what was said between David Letterman and Chan at the end there? Thanks, biggest front row fan- Kat

  • "Sorry Chan, I'm married."

  • Cat is nothing but class, get your opinions real

  • The crowd didn't cheer loud enough! If I was there I would be screaming like a maniac. And btw I think her awkward movements are cute. She is feeling the music and it shows the passion she puts into the music/performances. She wins my sexiest voice of all time award.

  • Skull Crackin Version !!~ Viva The Cat !!~

  • She wrote the song - she should be allowed to use whichever mannerisms she wants to express HER lyrics... Also as someone pointed out, I think she's probably used to multi-tasking with an instrument whilst singing.

  • @fyodor7680

I will leave your comment there just to show how some people are very ignorant in this world.

  • @ThousandThrills lol okay thanks! Her physical mannerisms while performing do make her look like a heroin addict.

  • @ThousandThrills

    Well said.

  • @fyodor7680

She looks like a fucking queen. You idiot.

  • @fyodor7680 Well she used to have a problem with alcohol.

  • @Chronicmentality well, so??

  • @fyodor7680 looks like a drug addict...who told you how drug addicts are supposed to look?

  • Funny how Letterman always keeps holding girls hands and never lets go lol. =P

  • I used to love cat power. This was one of my favorite songs. She used actually play instuments and not wiggle like an idiot. You can tell she's not comfortable. It's been downhill since "The Greatest"

  • @QuiteIncredible

I bet you never really loved her to say such a thing...

She's far from looking like an idiot and being uncomfortable but you would probably prefer to see her drunk on stage but I'm glad for her that she is a "new" person.

    Perfect the way she is.

  • @ThousandThrills

Well, i loved listening to her music.

And it's just my opinion that she doesn't look comfortable.

Don't get all fan boy on me and pull the "she's sober" bs. I don't know her as a person (and neither do you), i'm just talking about the music and the performance. I think she's going downhill. It's too pop for me.

  • @QuiteIncredible

You're the one with the BS...I met her in person and she is not the idiot you are trying to make her look like.

She is not uncomfortable, it's the way she is expressing hersellf. If that is being an idiot for you, you never really loved who she was before when she was even more uncomfortable on stage.

I should not even be posting your comments, we don't need comments like those.

She's not going downhill, she is just doing something else, she'll play solo again one day...

  • @ThousandThrills

    "Leave Chan ALONE!!!"

    That's all I hear.

  • @QuiteIncredible

Maybe that's because all we hear is that she has changed in a bad way, and that is not true. It's completely stupid to make remarks about the way she moves like she was not normal or on pills like another person said. That's all I'm saying.

I can't even understand how someone can find something negative about her. Seriously.

  • @ThousandThrills YOU ARE SO RIGHT!! I love the "old" Chan, but dude I'm telling you, this "new" Chan just seems so much more free. Like seriously, I've checked out her music recently and I've only been a fan for like 4 months lol but man!! I like her old songs, but it's almost like 2 completely diff people between then and now. I LOVE it. Hell, if this what's been trying to come out of her all these years, then what the fuck was she waiting for?

    Chan do ya thang lol!

  • @madeyes4u

    thanks

and you make a lot of sense...

Dear Sir is my favorite album right now but it doesn't make me hate who she is now, not at all.

  • @ThousandThrills yeah, I hear you. It's a privilege to see people grow.

  • @QuiteIncredible How stupid can people be? She's singing with emotion and being a true artist. Is there a way she should be acting? If you don't like it just listen to her music, and I'm sure you will be enjoy. Chan is The Greatest.

  • Dave doesn't wanna let go. I understand.

  • It may be more poppish, but nothing Cat Power does nowadays beats performances of this song in the 90's.

  • I think that Dave really wants her. I know I do. Women with a beautiful voice just kill me.

  • Chan is so campy here, she's a sensitive gay boy in a cute woman's body.

  • @philipsmog

she's not a gay boy, she's a real woman...the greatest I have met so far...

  • @ThousandThrills ok ok, she's a real woman, I love Cat power too, but she's campy as fuck here, like a Lower East Side Judy Garland shaky on pills.

  • @philipsmog

    @philipsmog

....that's called emotion...you can't sing a song of this kind without moving on stage and she does it in her own way and not in some other fake person's way and this is why I love her more than any other singer out there.

I wish I could meet her again, she was the kindest artist in person, not some fake Lady Gaga...

  • Gifted soul, my hat is off to you!

  • whoa!

  • "dave that's a group"

  • Damn powerful song!

Great performance and you can see that Letterman is proud to have her in his show. He is a decent fellow, I like him.

And I LOVE Cat Power, she's cool!

    A very gifted musician.

  • This song is for you, and you know it. [Thanks tina]

  • This song is for you, and you know it. [Thanks Tina]

  • wow. most performances on late night shows are soulless and passionless. this is the exact opposite. you can tell david letterman means it when he says "that was great."

  • @drifternumber9 David Letterman has LOTS of great performances during the years. I don't know who chooses the bands, but they are always edgy & new. :)

  • Hehe letterman is not letting go her hand at the end. I won't either if i had the chance

  • Brilliant

  • I loved this girl ever since her song was in V For Vendetta. Such a brave artist but she's not even aware how good she is. I like the original guitar version of this song on Moon Pix.

  • Comment removed

  • She´s amazing !

  • very,very good.great,awesome performance...my fav song.....i sooo love it

  • is it me or does david letterman seem to have the best musical guests on his show?

  • cat power have a power soul and her voice is amazing.... can´t stop to hear this girl...

  • The keyboard player, Greg Foreman, is from Philly and I just wondered how he went from playing with a shit band like the Delta 72 and shooting heroin in Silk City's bathroom to playing with Chan on letterman? WTF? She has such a slammin body and face. I love her.

  • I love Chan's energy! She is pure and honest in a way that is too rare.

  • It seems as though she wears the same green button down top and dark jeans every time.

  • does anyone know the story behind that green button up she always wears? i love that she doesn't seem to have a very large wardrobe

  • This was absolutely awesome. Incredible. How do you like Letterman's ultra Prick comment at the end "What'a you doin with these guys". What a troll.

  • @akj375 It was awsome.....but as for Lettermans comment at the end ?...What he actually said was ''What's the deal with these guys?''

  • lol letterman wouldnt let her go at the end

  • ohmygod.she is awesome....her manner of singing...is incredible....i'm totally in love.....she is definitely talented and The Greatest........and this song is so so so good....

  • shes brilliant...not sure what the "enter your text here" bollocks was all about...brilliant version of this song tho

    ;-)

  • Cat is the girl-next-door with attitude!!! We (I mean I) love you Cat!

  • WOW!

  • I love her voice it's so beautiful in the mellow manner! XD

  • this song is so incredible and emotional, chan is the best!

  • she's unique...i love her beauty and relaxing voice--wow

  • Im crying just watching this....

  • Cat Power es maravillosa, una de las voces más melancólicas, demasiado buena. ^_^`

  • mindblowingly spectacular

  • i love her music..but she is SOOOO odd, every live performance is soooo odd, really the bending and the hand movements ..the whole thing kinda creepy, but love her music!!

  • she really has to stop smoking crack

  • I have no idea who she is but this song kicks a**~

  • shes cat fucking powers!

  • she's so trying to get her hand back at the end

  • I don't like this version..

  • Hey TTLLS, thanks for posting. Chan Marshall is amazing. When she sings, she is in her own world. I saw her playing solo in Los Angeles a few years ago.

  • This is too good. xo

  • sad that many people here only seem to know chan from that car commercial she did.. I'm sure that Ms Marshall has many goals for example staying sober and touching people with her music but becoming huge and mainstream is most certainly not one of them.

beautiful performance, so much emotion :).

  • No matter what you do the idiots of the world are just going to pick you apart to the very end. On the flipside, if they had any drive, they would be living thier dreams instead of bringing the world down behind a plastic keyboard with big mouths. They enjoy the anonymity of saying what they feel without the recourse of a knuckle sandwhich to the jaw. We are pulling for you! Be yourself and the audience will apreciate you that more. Ignore these YouTube diareeah of the mouth messiahs.

  • Thanks for warning me because this stupid youtube system is not sending me all the comments on here by email...strange.

I suspect that user lollyta21 to have like 16 different accounts because all her shitty comments are rated +16 and the replies to hers are now spam so this is not fair and lollyta will now be blocked! and all the other accounts she will try to post under here.

And lollyta21, you know nothing about Chan so go try to find a reason to live for a change.

  • cats cool. lovely voice and mood. love her take on" how can i tell you" by cat stevens on the commercial. i thought cat power would be a cool band name when i was listing to cat stevens one time. dont really know if i had heard her name or not. but i had to give her a listen and i must say COOL

  • LMAO!! You dirty, dirty gapped toothed bastard Dave!! LOL! Beyond your grisly visage and witty anecdotes I bet you wana jump Cats bones!! Sorry Dave but Chan is not one of your desperate floozies.
