This song was my introduction to Johnny, played it on a juke box at a restaurant when I was six or seven, started a lifelong appreciation for the man in black.
I love this song, but its so sad. Why can't country singers just make their songs have a somwhat happy ending? Why couldn't he be shot in the hand or a non fatal area?
@EagleVendetta - Do you really think Johnny would sing about getting shot in the hand? It's about making decisions and being responsible for them. There is finality in many decisions you make no matter how thoughtless or ignorant you may be at the time. In Folsom Prison Blues, he shot a man in Reno just to watch him die. Now he is paying the price, feeling the mistakes he made. Life is about making decisions, wrong or right. This isn't Hollywood. There are no easy outs.
@mishabear I've never heard Folsom Prison Blues, so I couldn't remark on that. And yes, your point makes sense. But I still think that he could have learned a decision by being shot in a not as fatal area. Something that would have say, crippled him for life. There are situations where people learn lessons from situations that don't cause them to die.
@VIKINGODIN I'm not saying they shouldn't make them all with good endings, but sometimes when they make these songs it's like they're already depressed when they're making them.
the music of early johnny cash songs especially this one is so basic an simply ....... yet the songs still sound so rich ........ why? .. cos of his voice an his lyrics .. its always what is the focus of any of his songs .. he draws you in .. an he is quite demanding listening
@123dukesfan Yeah sure. His early works like Flosom Prison Blues, Walk the Line, Man in Black, A Boy Named Sue, Cocaine Blues are great. And The America IV album has got some awesome covers by Johnny Cash. Also check the Johnny Cash Show (you can watch clips on youtube). Some real good duets with Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan as well as other good bands like CCR and Derek and the Dominoes. Hope that helps.
Johnny Cash is a great artist. He will be long remembered for his honesty in his lyrics. However, I feel he had a pain in his heart, but maybe it made him the man that we'll remember forever. Peace
It's facinating. I am from the Netherlands, from a middle class family. I never knew trouble, I have had a quit easy life. I not quit a hard boy, but Cash's songs about hard life western life in the United States still touch your soul.
Hey friend i noticed mostly good people listen to good music. This is a great song, and youre right, the emotion he puts in any song makes the song so much better.
Really good, spot on performance. like all of his i guess lol. he goofed the words a tiny bit. i didn't notice until i watched it back. oh well, he did a good job covering haha. we miss u johnny!
Johnny Cash forever!!! one of the greatest songs of the old american songbook.

It's amazing that a song half a century old about a boy in the old west has a message that still applies to today.
