I love this song, but its so sad. Why can't country singers just make their songs have a somwhat happy ending? Why couldn't he be shot in the hand or a non fatal area?

@EagleVendetta - Do you really think Johnny would sing about getting shot in the hand? It's about making decisions and being responsible for them. There is finality in many decisions you make no matter how thoughtless or ignorant you may be at the time. In Folsom Prison Blues, he shot a man in Reno just to watch him die. Now he is paying the price, feeling the mistakes he made. Life is about making decisions, wrong or right. This isn't Hollywood. There are no easy outs.

But I still think that he could have learned a decision by being shot in a not as fatal area. Something that would have say, crippled him for life. There are situations where people learn lessons from situations that don't cause them to die.

@123dukesfan Yeah sure. His early works like Flosom Prison Blues, Walk the Line, Man in Black, A Boy Named Sue, Cocaine Blues are great. And The America IV album has got some awesome covers by Johnny Cash. Also check the Johnny Cash Show (you can watch clips on youtube). Some real good duets with Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan as well as other good bands like CCR and Derek and the Dominoes. Hope that helps.
