I'm not sure I understand what you were arguing about, but I would love to hear this question myself & give you my opinion. I've read the book and I enjoyed it, true, it is fiction, and some parts are questionable, but I'm willing to look it up in comparison with the Bible to see if what you're saying matches up.
I read the book. I thought it an awesome example of God's love. God is God, who are we to say what He can and can't do? I loved the book and recommend it highly.
As you can see, this is the issue with non-Calvinists. They love their idol and chant "free-will" profusely. This humanistic presupposition they have where God has to be a certain way or he isn't just/loving. Non-Calvinists hold external preconceptions of God over scripture. The more obnoxious ones go as far as atheists and say "If God is a certain way (Calvinist), I rather be in hell than worship him". As you can see their universal atonement is illogical when they say people still go to hell.
When I hear theologians this and theologians that, I want to vomit. The bible is pure oxygen, the breath of the Father, and we do well to inhale deeply. It says to NOT trust in the flesh. Stop listening to people and start getting into the Word! Then you can armor yourself with scripture like Jesus did in the desert. Otherwise you'll get stung by the scorpions.
I was there with my son and Matt Slick tried to hand me a paper and I said no thank you. He then shoved it into my chest and in a quite voice said "Just fricken take it." If I wasn't with my son I would have beat him within and inch of his life. all of this is true and If I ever see him again I WILL beat the shit out of him. Like the Russian said in Rocky IV "IF he dies he dies." I look forward to seeing you again Mr. Slick.
@JesusforLife2 If someone did to you what Mr. Slick did to me and you did not feel the way I felt then I feel sorry for you. It means you are likely a human doormat with very low self esteem. If that is the case then I feel sorry for you, I really do. People who use religion as an excuse to behave in an intolerable way such as what Mr. Slick did are deplorable. I do not know Mr. Slick and I hope I never see him again.
People need to be careful to distinguish between the Shack heresy, and whatever other theological commitments he might have. Calvinism/Arminianism is a debatable issue and shouldn't be mixed into arguments against clear theological errors regarding the nature of God.
Arminianism always spins out of control not just into pietism and moralism but to much more ill such as process theism, socinianism and liberalism. I would have pressed penal substitution and then the application of that protitiation and unto whom. Does anyone remember The Megashift debate from 20 years ago???
Some interesting points are made. Of course Jesus was the one who died on the cross and the Father sent the Son but didn't die on the cross. And as for the work Jesus did, clearly He didn't pay the price for the sins of all individuals ever. He suffered for sins to bring 'us' to God (1 Peter 3:18). He laid down His life for 'us' (1 John 3:16) - believers. He was destined to save 'His people' from their sins (Matt 1:21). But respect to Paul Young and Matt here - they debated in a brotherly way.
This entire argument that you're giving Matt is a straw-man and partial attempt to just label, and a mis-understanding of the atonement. But no, I'm not for the writer of the Shack either... you back up your views by claiming their Scriptural(which of course others would also), and then claim theologians(Pharisees) don't agree, and I would be willing to bet you think it's historical too... but have you studied the Ante-Nicene church in depth? they'd call you a heretic for the Limited Atonement
@ropowerman Yes, it is hard to hear. Sorry, but we didn't plan on talking to anyone. The camera was just for "in case" stuff... and viola!, there's Paul Young. oh well....
Matt, I want to see more evangelism videos like this one! I really enjoy them. It encourages me to get out there and share the gospel. Do you guys have a ministry/evangelism team at CARM? I'm looking to join one.
@PropheticVindicator I hold a great respect for Matt Slick, but I just didn't understand the back and forth. It wasn't as good of conversation as the others I've seen him engage in. But that's just my opinion.
@Creationcreed The Bible says to come and let us reason together. I thought it was the proper context to have a discourse like this since it is exposing/reproving/rebuking false teaching. I am always an advocate of just the pure gospel message, but there are times and places for this type of thing.
As a soft calvinist, I don't really see the point in discussing in grim detail in the saving of the sinner, who rejects, can we reject, can we accept, who accepts, because in the end we are either saved through the repentance of sin, faith in Jesus Christ or you're continual rebellion ends in condemnation. We still have to live as if we do have some decisions as to sin or not, read the word or not, obey or not...trust in God to help us or not. whether Calvinist or Pelagian. Am I wrong in this?
If I were to write a fiction story about YOU, used your real name, address, work place, etc., and said false things about you, put words in your mouth that you would never say, would that be okay.... as long as it was fiction? No? How much more should we be careful with fiction where someone puts words into God's mouth! 2 Cor. 5:9 says, "A little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough." In other words, a little heresy leads to a lot of heresy. Such is the case with The Shack.
@carmvideos exactly. The Da Vinci Code author used the same bad argument. 'It's just fiction!'....okay so if it is just fiction does that mean I can write a fictional account of how the Hardy Boys go back in a time machine and find out the holocaust was a cover up and Hitler was a Jew? I don't think so. Fiction is meant for entertainment, not for deception.

People are condemned to hell for their sin...not for their "not accepting a gift." People are saved by grace, not through "accepting a gift."

All humans say "forever no" in their natural state.
but God, Who is rich in mercy, for His great love wherewith He loved us, even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ.
