@guitarluver1000 Yeah both same guitar the other pic is after he's used it alot...he took the pickups covers off and bar and its more beat up do to use thats all.
@elbenaso Well it's hard to say because he bought more then one there but I think his red SG used on highway to hell was purchased there. Do you have pics of your guitar would love to see it.

Sorry,I don't have any pics. I've been looking for some and if I find any I will get back with you. IIRC it was a black blade type bridge pickup that looked like a BL but I can't say for sure. I've only seen 1 pic of it but IIRC it was 1 of the popular Angus pics back in the day.
Thanks for putting this together! Have you any info on a "blade" type pickup that I have seen pics of Angus using? It looked like a Bill Lawrence pickup to me.
HAHA! Look at the picture of Angus at 1:41 !!!! the long hair at age 17!!!
By the way, great info and video!
I read in an interview that Angus bought his first SG (used) (thought to be a '68) in 1970. That means that it would either be a late '69 or early '70 SG.
I heard that the sg with the lightning bolts in the fretboard and white switch surrounds is his original walnut revamped ??? it does have that very early AC/DC tone no end.
He thought that but he has said really doesn't know. He said people have told him its anything from a '67 to 'mid '70s. But it is very clearly NOT a '68.
that picture of him with his first sg from circa 1972/1973 is in the book Maximum Rock N Roll. A book about AC/DC. He looks so funny lol cuz his hair is kinda hippie'ish. It's a great read though! Lots of rare pictures.
Rock goes to college is October 28, 1978 and his orignal SG if you see in my video is in sept all battered up and he has something new in oct when rock college was filmed
Oh we'll see it for sure. Actually, I bought two. That '69/'70 and a REAL '68 (this time I'm sure lol). So, I should have the whole period covered (1964, 1967, 1968, 1969/1970). It's a personal thing. A collector's dream, too. And let's hope, a guitar player dream, too. Don't forget I'm 41! Old fart here: got the money now (hadn't money when younger). SO, the ones interested (Kyle - BT - me, and maybe more) could dig further into the "Mysteries" of the late '60s Gibson SGs! HA!
I have my suspicions that his lightning bolt SG is really his original restored.
For one, it has the same shallow beveling only found on '70s SGs, so that rules out it being custom made by Gibson. And since he said the neck warped on his original, and the lightning bolt one doesn't have the huge HS like his original, I'm assuming he had a new neck set into the body with lightning bolt inlays, then it was repainted and rebuilt.
That's been my suspicion too. Just of recent naturally. Months ago I found out about this. Before I hadn't noticed the differences between late '60s and early '70s SGs. When I did, a new world opened to me. I think this happend last summer. I am interested in researching into this even further. Kyle?
I doubt that the lightning bolt sg is his original restored. Angus would never take out on tour because of extensive abuse. It's possible he could of had it modeled after his original. He also probably has more than one lightning bolt sg because I dont think a single one would survive touring all these years cause he first appearred using it on the fotw tour I believe but I could be wrong. im sure angus has many custom models built for him over the years.
Well first, he's taken original '61 and '62 SGs on tour so he would have no problem taking his first SG, especially if it was restored. Also, I've heard him say in interviews that he still uses that first SG live and on recordings, meaning it would have to have been restored.
Second, he didn't even know the year of his first SG for sure, so he would never approach Gibson to make a custom guitar with the same beveling because he obviously didn't notice the differences that proved it was a '70-'71.
Also, looking at the SGs he used in the '80s, it seems like he could care less about the details. It would seem out of character for him to have an SG made to his exacting specifications, especially because he didn't know the exact specs.
Well I've read that he had someone look at his first sg and the guy worked for gibson for a while and had never seen an sg that was like that one. The neck is the most unique thing about it. Just because he doesn't know the specs and details about the sg, doesn't mean it can't be closely recreated. He might not have alot of custom models designed for him but there definatley are some like the jaydee sg. Angus probably isnt picky about looks but probably about feel.
Yes, but that instance you're talking about when his SG was examined is when his Signature model was being developed. That's why it has Gibson's slimmest neck.
And since Angus doesn't know the specs, he obviously could care less if they made one with the correct beveling because he couldn't tell the difference.
The Jaydee was custom made for him, but I don't think he really designed it himself, I think the guy who makes Jaydee guitars designed it FOR Angus.
When he had the guitar examined, it wasnt because of his signature model gibson makes. The interview I got this from was done in 1983 way before his sig model was developed. Im not saying that he definatley has an sg(s) that is modeled after his first but he obviously loved his first why wouldnt he want one modeled after his first.
As I said, he could obviously care less about the details, and he wouldn't even know the beveling was different, so how would he know to tell Gibson to copy the exact beveling?
He doesnt care much about details such as looks and appearence but when it comes to the neck, hes definatley probably picky. Angus isnt going to play every sg you throw at him. The bottom line is that we dont know if he has an sg that has similar specs to his original but if he does, im sure he tells them what he wants in the neck and describes the neck on his first.
Well maybe he had a guy from Gibson study the neck of his original in '83 so when he got a new one set into the original body, it would feel the same? The lightning bolt SG first showed up in '86 so it makes sense.
Angus wouldn't take his first sg out on tour restored or not. It's too valuable and has alot of sentimental value to him. I do believe he used it on most of their albums. On the black ice album I read he also used one of his sg's dating back to the hth tour. He did use his first sgon tour back in the early days because he didn't have much else and it wasnt that valuable to him. He probably does take original 61/62 sg's on tour but they are replaceable if something happens to them.
He took it out on tour for the first what, four years of his career? And he's said in interviews that he still uses that first guitar live and in the studio. That statement, which is contradictory to his statements about the neck warping, leads me to this conclusion being the only possibility.
True about the jaydee, I doubt there was much input by angus but im sure that the guy just didnt whip one up and angus liked it, angus probably gave him basic characterisitcs that he wanted it to have. If angus is still using his first sg live, i have yet to see it. Look back at all the video footage of them over the years. Ive never seen him with it except for the 70's. Possibly the early 80's. He does use it in the studio during all times.
Well it depends, I think the Jaydee was a gift to Angus.
Yeah, so if he still uses it live, that supports my argument that it's his Lightning bolt SG now. And if the neck warped real badly but he still uses it in the studio, he would have to get a new neck for it, also supporting the idea that the Lightning bolt is his original.
I dont think the lighning bolt sg is his first. As stated in this video angus retired his first sg from touring in 78 due to warp and wood rot. Would be very hard if not impossible to restore it to the condition of the lightning bolt sg that angus appeared with in the mid to late 80's
Angus first appears with the bolt sg in the mid to late 80's and looks fairly shiny as it probably was newer and today is alot more worn out, but I also think he has or had more than one lightning bolt sg cause I dont think a single 1 would surivive all those years. angus has rotted out many a sg due to sweat and he just retires and moves on to another one which would explain he has used so many different sg's live over the years
Well obviously if he had a new neck set into it, it would have to be repainted. And it wouldn't wear nearly as quickly as before because he only used in on a few tours. He could also have had it painted thicker to handle more wear.
The black '63 SG he's using this tour hes been using since TRE Tour.
It was used on part of the fotw tour, buyv tour heavily, sul tour heavily, black ice tour although appears to be angus' secondary sg to the black one. If you look closely at the body of the bolt sg, you can see the dark wood grain, appears to be the natural wood of the guitar which would disprove it of being his first because the body is not of the first. if it was painted over it would look more of a solid color with less if not much of the wood grain visible.
I respect your opinion and all but I still firmly believe that he does not use first sg live anymore. As good as it is, he would have to be fool to do so. Its worth too much and im sure it has big sentimental value to angus and there would be alot of attempts to steal that sg, if i were him, id guard that guitar with my lifeand make sure it was as safe as possible.
I do agree that its seems foolish that he would still use it, but I just think there's too many similarities for it to just be a different guitar. Also, as I said, if Gibson made it for him, the beveling would be consistent with whatever they were making in the year it was built for him, and it's not. I will have to go back and try to find the interview where he says he still uses that first one and find out when it was from.
You may be right, atleast if he was using it live he would be putting to good use instead of keeping it locked up most of the time. I remember once before i had seen this burny sg made in the 80's on ebay, i cant remember it extremely well but I remember it having lighning bolt inlays built into it and the cream pickup switch ring, was the closest thing ive ever seen to his. I wonder, i cant seem to find a picture of it though, interesting though.
Actually I read that he used a '68 SG for the chords on Ballbreaker so there could be some truth to that (assuming they mistook his original for a '68 like he has for many years).
Some SGs built VERY late in '69 had volutes, but not many. The one you refer to is one of the few. The chances Angus's first would be in that small window are slim, so it's still most likely a '70-'71.
Also the beveling along the cutaways is almost nonexistent, which further suggests '70-'71.
I never noticed the different guitar on HTH although I noticed it didn't sound the same. I think he used that one on BIB as well because his leads sound similar to HTH.
I think the one showed there (currently being shipped to my home) is another '70, not a '69. IF even just component dates '70, it must be at least a '70. Maybe though, it has all the features of a late '69. Angus might well have been one of such. I'm curious to find out when it gets to me.
Well if the serial really does date it to '69 I would assume it's a late '69 that got the '70s batch of pots just as they arrived. Or the pots could have been replaced, but that would be unlikely after only one year, unless the dealer had problems and bought new pots for it the next year just to get it off his floor.
My reason for assuming Angus's is not a late '69 as I said is the extremely shallow beveling inside the horns and the small chance it would be a late '69.
Thanks for takin the time to do these vids man, very interesting. I've always been curious about the sg's that he's been using on tour lately like the black one and the thunderbolts one. Ive seen pics of him using a non gibson sg back in the 80's, it was a custom one(s) that was made by a company called jaydee guitars that had the thunderbolts on it. The thunderbolt sg(s) that he uses today has got to be a custom model, possibly built by gibson but another company could have made it.
anyone notice he had different pick ups in 2:07 than in 2:29

Anyway I'm glad we could discuss this without getting up in arms over it (as so often happens on YT).
And next time I hang out with Angus I'll have him clear it up for us. ;)

I agree it was a good discussion and be sure to ask him lol

Haha yeah, I'll try to remember, lol.
Interesting, I've never seen anyone try to recreate that guitar. I thought I would be the first! Well, one of these days I will... one of these days.
Good talkin' to ya,

I read one where it says he uses his first for power chords in the studio, but then again how old are the interviews posted.
