Ummmmm Szabo got a ten on her beam routine with a very obvious hop on the dismount. Mary Lou Retton overscored? Yeah sure. But no more than anyone else.

marylou's floor routine was not a ten at all thats a fact marylou strong gymnast like szabo but szabo came back with revenge in event finals and herself as best gymnast at the olypmics games of 84 and and won more gold medels than marylou and shut everybody's mouth about marylou how great she isbut ecaterina is the real golden girl of 84 games as gymnast magazine puts it on their front cover and pretty too,I'am sure marylou knows but my real favorite gymnast to win was Lavinia Agache

I'ts funny, Peter Vidmar got a 9.90 because of a small hop on the PB in the AA. and Mary Lou got a 10.00 with a noticeable hop on FX...In the AA. I guess that the men judges were more accurate on doing their job than the women judges. I guess Mary Lou must be grateful for that. Or maybe it was about time to have a woman on the Wheaties Boxes!!!

Mary Lou was great but was so overscored during this competition...for example that 10 on floor with that big step forward in the third pass...

I've watched Mary Lou do her vaults on different vids but I've never heard Bela or her excitement o them. I got chills hearing her victorious screams. This is so cool.

MaryLou Retton with her unpolished style clearly got overscored, she succesfully fooled the judges on the landings, and the partisan crowd did its part. I'm American, but I can see the difference between good and better...

absolutely! that's why i'm starting to like the not-so-new scoring system. it was just getting ridiculous, they were all striving for a 10, but the judges were helping them and practically handing them out!

All judging issues aside....I think U.S. gymnastics is at the level it is today because of Mary Lou Retton. That gold medal had a tremendous effect, even 24 years later.

Yes, it is. However, don't forget that 200 years is a big time in gymnastics, it's not fair to compare gymnasts for different eras.

No it does not, im in my 20's. And you must be so old your memory is wrong because there was not even any perfect tens in those days, the first ten was for Nadia in late 70's.

First of all, it was the middle 70's. 1976 to be precise. Second of all, Nadia wasn't the first gymnast to be given a 10 by a judge. She was the first gymnast to be given an OVERALL 10 for a routine. Are you forgetting they average the scores? At least the did at one time. I'm not sure how it works nowdays. The scoring system makes my brain hurt.

Semyonova was not "lucky" to win. Its not like everyone fell and she won it by the fault like your cow like Americans of Sacramoan and Johnson did on floor, and Nastia too on Beam. If anything they had bad luck to loose out the Bronze.

Soviets boycotted these games because the us boycotted the one in moscow in 1980. The Soviets and other countries who boycotted the 84 olympics held the Alternate Games. The real gymnastics competition was there, IMO. Amazing AA competition between Olga Mostepenova and Maxi Gnauck.

No offence, but what do you mean by "it's a fact"? I've read a few articles that stated that the "supreme" competition was at the Alternate Games. I noticed there is not much footage of it here on youtube anymore, so I cannot back up my claim with video proof.

Mr Numbly, there is no convincing lakuilera. She is just one of those who are in love with the European gymnasts. They can do no wrong. Mary Lou took no step on the first vault. She nailed it cold. Get over it. Ecaterina Szabo is too blame for her loss. Had she not fallen on her UB TO dismount, all of this would be irrelevant. Things happen for a reason. It was Mary Lou's destiny and there was no stopping it.

She took a step on her SECOND VAULT, not her first, so, as her first attempt was a 10, the second is irrelevant. If you want to see a better view of her feet as she lands, there are posts on YouTube of it. She stuck to the floor as though she had super glue on her feet.

This view is misleading because as the camera pans up, she simultaneously arches her back and pushes her lower legs back as well just as her feet leave the frame, making it look as though she took a step. In the other posts, the veiw of her feet is much clearer.

The reason it's beyond you is because you're only 20 years old. You have 23 years of POST M.L.R. gymnastics stuck in your head, and gymnasts since then are alot better. If you could erase your knowledge of how far gymnasts have come since Retton, and only compare her to the other gymnasts BACK THEN, you would understand why people thought she rocked. It's really that simple.

Even in her unauthorized bio, the Mary Lou camp admitted that she wasn't perfect but the best that night. Her difficulty was amazing for 1984. Szabo got a 9.95, so they gave Mary Lou a 10.00. Get over it. I am sorry that Mary Lou was not from a Communist country. These are these same people who I am sure say Khorkina deserved gold in 04 with her "overscored, watered down routines"

Non-American gymnastics fans are the biggest bunch of sore losers in history. Every time an American wins, they whine and gripe and cry about favoritism. I didn't see them crying from 1956 to 1990 when the U.S.S.R. and other Eastern Bloc countries repeatedly CHEATED their way to the medal stand through voting blocs, use of drugs, score rigging, payoffs, etc. Learn your history and keep your big trap SHUT.

Mary Lou should not have gotten a 10.000 on FX. Her double tuck in the end was a little short of rotation. She covered pretty well, but I would have given her a 9.950, tying her with Szabo.
