@makrisj That soldier is the only one who preserved his identity through the bootcamp and war. He did so by defying authority and getting into trouble with his superiors. The whole movie is actually about the fact, that people refuse some of their psychic and physical features, and project them into a shadow, which is an archetype for their archenemy.

Joker's statement about the duality of man is what this movie is all about. That one line summarizes the entire theme of the film. When you watch the film from that point of view - duality - you will see hundreds of examples of it. Such an awesome movie.
