the reason Ultra Magnus couldn't unlock the secrets of the matrix was because the matrix would recognise it owner's touch,and even though Prime Passed it to him Hot Rod was the first to touch the matrix before Ultra Magnus,which is why Hot Rod unlocked the matrix and became Rodimus Prime.
I love Toei, God Bless Toei, they really should do a Documentary on Toei, they animated this movie, and a lot of the 80's Transformers episodes and there Japanese sequel series, Headmasters, Masterforce, etc.

He's probably also in Transformers Prime. I also noticed he is featured in Transformers Energon. Rodimus isn't as minor a character as he seems.

And after seeing what happened to him in Animated, it's clear to say that Energon did him more justice. Animated didn't treat Rodimus with respect. But I get where you're comming from. You know what, I'm a huge Optimus Prime/Ultra Magnus fan. Always was, always will be. Those two are the best. Thing is though, I would actually consider this the greatest moment in the history of Transformers. Say what you will about Prime dying so early in the movie or Megatron becoming Galvatron...it all made the climax here so riveting and incredible. Am I the only one that get emotional here when Rodimus is running and then announces AUTOBOTS TRANSFORM AND ROLL OUT. I was 15 when this movie came out , now at 41 I am still in love with the movie and wish I could go back to those happy times when things were innocent and I was innocent and had friends. WOW!!!!!!

@awalker773 For me, it's when the Matrix of Leadership shines on Hot Rod as he snaps the chain around Galvatron's neck and as Hot Rod gets hold of the Matrix, then you hear Optimus Prime's voice for one last time. I was unfortunate not to see this in the movie theater when it came out in what, 1986(?). I was 11 years old at that time. I didn't see the movie until it aired on the Transformers TV show as a 5 part show 2 years later. I remember how shocked I was w/ the first attack scene.

I believe they left in the "dammit" line in it because I looked @ my sister w/ a surprised expression of my face after Ultra Magnus said it. You know, like Kup said, Rodimus Prime did have potential. The only reason he didn't go over so well in the animated series was because people missed Optimus. Perhaps if they had found a way for Hot Rod to ascend to Prime without killing off Optimus, then it could've worked.
