hey i got a question, there are a lot of complaints about the autofocus on this thing, and ive seen that it is terribly slow, but in your shot everything is in focus. Are there like settings to use a pan focus or something? i'm really doubting if i should get this one or the canon hf s10, im leaning to the 550D because of the amazing depth of field and that i can use different lenses, but it still misses some features over a real camcorder, let me know please?:D
there is no continual autofocus...the camera can focus in movie mode but is initiated by the user and takes some time due to the fact that lens has to move a fair amount physically. But you can adjust the depth of field and get more things in focus like I did here by changing the fstop. disadvantage of dslr is going to be image stabilization, especially at zoom. If you are planning to film a lot from fixed points this will be good, but from hand - go for the camcorder.
@cadyfatcat hmm yea im getting it for making actual short films (or long ones) so i guess itll be okay:P and dslr dof is making things more movie looking:D
They both have built in mics and stereo input if you want to use an internal device. The mic built into the 550d seems to pic up a lot of noise adjusting the camera etc, so getting anbexternal might not be a bad idea depending on yoir application.

I saw some aliasing/moire on the front of a truck grill @ 0:04.... was this due to youtube compression or is it in the original video file?
