  • Remarkable

  • Chaos and order - just like the universe.

  • This is a form of objective teaching, but on youtube it is probably throwing pearls to swine and some of the comments seem to prove that. I am the gibbering idiot, whilst my True Self Watches Eternally.

  • THEY'RE LIKE A GIANT PUZZLE

  • Is this from the 1979 film? It looks recent...

  • sorry to offend anyone here but i found the first dance hilariously and weird.what looks like the 'drunken' man circling around. what religion is this?

  • @rainbowsun84 it is the mystic part of islam- just google the word "sufi"

  • Attack of the clones!

  • wow!!!!

  • удивительно!!!!!

  • Spiritual Movies ? ... Just a handfull of them around ...

This one contains some diamonts among the stones.

But "simple" stones have their value quite as well, right ?

  • super east!

  • what is the meaning of the first one?

  • that is some serious originality and precision

  • The way of the guru....... One very strong locus of control..... The rest locusts

  • There's always one drunken fool who ruins it for everyone else...

  • Somewhere, Gurdjieff is having a collassal belly laugh.

  • Thank you for sharing this, I never imagined anybody except me in intereted in this movie, or book. This is one of my favorit and most influential movies for me.

  • Ah Gurdjieff! is a star twinkling.

  • What the #%&*

  • Hahahaha

  • wtf what fucking movie is this O_O

  • Too funny... a little bit 'ridiculous'! It's an occidental vision of the derviches!!! ;-)

  • whoa D;

I shouldve danced like that at my aunties wedding the other week ;3

  • fanstastc!

  • Spiritual student gets down with his bad self...

The exercise of conscious dance is designed to help one see that it is not you who does the Work, it is God. Study the mind that judges and reacts to what it thinks this is. Mr. Gurdjieff was not the author of the teachings. The Author of all Truth teaching is God. Gurdjieff did not exist in the way this student does.

  • great dancing though

  • @cheapcheap18

    sleep sweetly ohoohoohooohohohoohoho

    litle hasnamushito.

  • Beelzebub all the way magnificent 3 brained beings that exist on that fine planet

  • OSHO was a great fan of ole' Gurdijeff. Rajneesh always talked about him. Even continuing or enhancing many of Gurdijeff's practices in the Sacred Dances to enact the awakening of a person through dancing. OSHO had a difference with Jiddu Krishnamurti in the fact that both OSHO and G.I. Gurdijeff thought that people needed a device in which can be helpful instead of yelling at the person, wake up! wake up! wake up!. Do you think we always need Guru's or spiritual guides?

  • yes allways

    you have to found it

  • found him

  • I am just, it so happens, reading Osho's book, 'Meetings With Remarkable People' in which G, features in about 20 pages. I am wondering whether in dance, here, the idea is to work on the physiology of the dancer (c.f. Wilhelm Reich). In dance, he's working on a physical level i.e. a bottom-up approach. To answer your question: NO. The way, the truth, the light (as it were) is inside us. A guru may be helpful pulling us up the mountain, but s/he can also pull us the wrong way.

  • Oh yea,can you feel the groove?

  • Is that zazen at 1:20?

  • This is one of the few really first class things about the movie. The rest of it is pretty uneven in quality . . .

  • where can i get step by step instructions on how to do this first dance?

  • Your simplest method . . . would be to hire a dance choreographer to re-construct it from the 2 different versions on YouTube.

Alternatively, you can try googling for Gurdjieff movements teachers . . . but then you'll likely have to put up with a lot of the nonsense associated with them.

  • Wonderfull and deep music... Nmst Babaji and Sarika.. From Rome :-)

  • i like this :)

  • These guys were great in winning Britain's Got Talent.

  • The first movement is called the trembling dervish

  • what's the title of the music, if there's a title? sorry for my bad english

  • hagh 100/100

  • I dont know any dance like this. nice scene but I guess its all made up!

  • dju schwuchtel

  • ah it reminds me of some trance dancing, for example see raja ram's live version of 'mescaline' - that's with electronic music but it's quite similar.

  • interesting to consider then that these dances are thousands of years old!

  • interesting to consider then that the dervish movement isn't thousand of years old.

    :|

  • how do u know? and who says that one cancels the other out?... have u studied Gurdjieff. do u know the heritage of the school he was taught in?

  • Almost every comment here was connected with G. himself. It is the same way as the bible now.G. has become the greatest obstacle for hes learning.Separate the man from the idea.Enough of smart comments.Question youreself...not a man who is dead.Hes ideas are alive. That is more then enough.

  • esto SI que es PSY TRANCE!!!!!!!

  • highlander, thanks for your answer. "instruction, knowledge and truth" are indeed important to your head, just as suppleness and stamina are important to your body and confidence and co-operation to your feelings. A regime that sees only one as important and the others as "by products" will cause the body and emotions to revolt and criticise the arrogant intellect.

  • awsome video and so many many underlying meanings to the video, watch the whole movie, you will see many many deep rooted meanings...love Gurdjieff

    cw

  • The actor watching the dancers, playing Gurdjieff, Terence Stamp, is a disciple of Osho. You can find Osho's people performing these dances on this site. These dances promote focus, co-operation, stamina and suppleness, calm and confidence.

  • Wow...

  • Gurdjief Gurdjief Gurdjief Gurdjief Gurdjief Gurdjief Gurdjief Gurdjief Gurdjief Gurdjief

  • Sehr Bemerkenswert!

  • no audio......

im not laughing, i am singing along.

    seriously great movie though!

  • ha, ha ha ha...

    ha, ha ha ha...

    ha, ha ha ha.

  • The Teachings of Gurdjieff will last for ever. The closer to the source of knowledge, the purer the water. Only fools and the ignorant will drown it it! :)

Very best regards from DIMschool Belgium

School voor Ontwikkeling van de Innerlijke Mens.

  • you're assuming that he's still in the grave.

  • one of the dancers seems Jodorosky...

  • CorrectYourself: religion is for people of intellect and power.

  • religion means to reconnect oneself... apparently to something that has been lost!?

religion is for all who understands that.

  • Here we can see only a few of the complete corpus of the Movements, some of which are used for very specific functions only. As one can easily observe, these dance sequences simply DO NOT FIT in the fabric of a film, and this is precisely because they are authentic, and in this case very correctly performed by J.Saltzmann's group, students of The Work.

  • The dances seen here were created by Georgij Ivanovich Gurdjief. The dancers here are part of The Work, a method for the evolution of man that he developed and explored with his students. The film itself (fictional) is losely based on Gurdjief's metanarrative book, a kind of self-biography, called "Meetings with Remarkable Men".

  • I heard years ago that the title for this dance was "Lament on the Death of Ali" ... as in Mohammed's son-in-law who was murdered.

The dance has some typical Central Asian elements to it. The bouncing on half-toe done double-time is something seen in folk dances, such as from the Bojnord area of Iran.

The crazy fellow in orbit brings to mind the Rifai dervishes.

  • this is amazing and very interesting and it seems choreagraphed and rehearsed somewhat but not in the commercial way it seems that it is built on ritual sort of like sufi turning where people practice and then do the sema

I thought it was beautiful and I love the music.

  • I had a question about this--is this supposed to be an authentic dance, or is this from a movie or documentary or what? I found it quite beautiful but was unsure of the reference to "meetings with remarkable men"...Thanks!

  • "Meetings with Remarkable Men" is a movie by Peter Brook (1979). I think that dances in the movie aren't "authentic" but choreographed by making direct references to the original ritual dances of different mystic groups.

  • I did further research into that, and yeah, I finally figured it wasn't a documentary...quite an interesting looking film

  • One last 'un. If any of y'all stuck in this egg-foo-yung are having doubts, there is a chance still...I'll give you a hint to the way out. The external world and your relationships in it, aren't such big liars after all. C'mon, you can do it. Accept the solidity of that which you never chose...ie. your own existence. Be o.k. with the fact that you are created. Surrender your silly search for 'self'. Hint: you already have one and it's looks alot like...

  • To clarify...I still think this is haunting and yes, beautiful, but not for the reasons that the adherents to this "way against God" - ala Gurdjieff, would have.

  • I dunno, as a former member of a G. school myself. I fell hard for stoic-neo-gnosticism, flavoured with Sufi sauce ala' turbanstyle. It was pathetic of course, and just as reliable, the "sly man" anticipated this kind of reaction. This is how complete the mindjob is, the constant use of psychological 'double-binds' with all of this "body-work" regimen, entrenches the psycho-soma, knee-jerk that doesn't answer the door when logic and common-sense come a knockin'.

  • I never be tired of watching this video. Its such a strong pleasure, I want see it again, again and again, so beautiful!!!!!

  • My personal hell would be watching - or dancing - these dances for all eternity. How do they compare, let us say, with a Beethoven symphony, in terms of people's values on what is beautiful? Can you really tell me that these dances are "beautiful"? What is beauty then, I wonder?

  • it is interesting how unhonest you are to yourself.

you allready choosed your personal hell, because as I can see-you ARE watching this dances verry often. I could beliwe that you are even trying to dance at home. stop wonder! know for yourself! that is beuty.

  • know thyself...more beautiful?..less beautiful?..such distinctions are purely subjetives...it's what is called objetive art... deep and really meaningful...contemplation and inner observation is the key to understand it...

  • My "The hell there isn't" was meant to be a reply to one very illuminated person's comment that "there is no hell". I don't happen to agree; I certainly don't believe that he knows that with as much certainty as he thinks he does.

  • Someday, one hopes, that that ridiculous laughing sound they emit will turn into laughter at how gullible they were at thinking engaging in such silliness was of benefit to them.

  • What he means by "mankind is asleep," is that most people have a system of built-up habits of thought and behavior from which it is nearly impossible for them to deviate, primarily because they identify with this system, taking it to be themselves. They do not consider that they learned these habits in the same way that they learned language: by imitation.

  • Your analysis that Gurdjieff thought most people to be trusting, gullible, easily led, etc. is a product of your imagination, of fitting Gurdjieff into your pre-formed idea of what a sophistic, swindling wise guy must be like.

  • thats where those masonic monty python goons got their ideas...tis a good day to die

  • Henrietta Lannes who was a pupil of Gurdjieff risked her life saving Jewish people during the war. She is honoured in the Hall of the Righteous in Israel.

  • Try to perform the Movements and then comment. They are designed to force one to be more awake and less a machine. Unless you find this focus, the Movements are impossible to do because they defy habitual ways of moving. G also presented his teaching in a way to cause those with stupid minds and phony images to ignore him.

  • I am fascinated by the music, the rhythm and the dance.

  • The music is not synced up properly with the video. Since the connection between sound and movement are totally integral to the whole idea of Gurdjieff movements, this kind of takes away from the whole thing. I would suggest tracking down the whole movie on DVD somewhere online (though it can be hard to find).

There is a fair amount of concrete information available about the use and purpose of these movements, and I would advise that anyone interested look into the matter further.

  • The second dance looks like the men are weaving the pattern of the world

  • I still think those movements look stupid. Like, if the project was to create a dance that was as bizarre as possible, those movements are something I myself might have come up with. Which is why I am sure in my heart and my intution that the impulse in creating them was deeply cynical and connected with Gurdjieff's pathological need to make others prove to him the vast distance between him (and by extension, his followers - to a lesser degree) and the mass of ordinary men.

  • Here a self-justifying error defends itself: I "just" wasn't strong enough. Since I am one of those who can't, and never will, "get it", my weakness (I'm "asleep") is not their problem. According to Gurdjieff, those who aren't "awake" just cease to exist when they die. The Gurdjieffians are insular and cynical about the welfare of others; I am crassly told to "just sleep on" - a duplicitous way of telling me to go to hell. Or cease to exist entirely. How evolved of him!

  • if you not understand-with your wholle being-what you are tallking about, it is much better to tell nothing.

knowledge by itself does not give understanding. nor is understanding increased by an increase of knowledge alone. understanding depends upon the relation of knowledge to being.

    btw...there is no hell.

  • The hell there isn't!

  • If you can get out of your head and really want this and willing to pay the price....it's possible

  • The guy flopping around is supposed to be the un-awake person just bouncing around in life - unlike the Gurdjieff groupies, who are all rigidly doing exactly the steps Gurdjieff created off the top of his head, in his typical cynical attitude toward his "guinea pigs" (which he is recorded as having called his followers - see "In Search of P.D. Ouspensky" by Gary Lachman) as he proved he could make people do whatever he wanted. Like dance these absurd dances.

  • hi haskellbob,
