  • I agree - my mom had this one growing up and it washes better than anyone that I've bought as an adult! I used to love watching this machine run, it had a glass window in the top to watch it go.

  • my goodness!waaaaaaaay too much soap power in there!! and nothing seems to be getting adgetated

  • OVERLOADED!!!!!!!!!!! If I were you I would load 4 or 5 jeansin that 1-18

  • looks like the tube ring is not aligned with the rest of the washer.

  • @CROIXMOIX Yip.

  • One of the best top-loaders they ever made, larger cap than the original, but functions the same

  • I don't think I have ever seen a Frigidaire 1-18 work so hard and do so little. Honestly, I expected that seven pairs of jeans would be no match for this machine.

  • My mom believed in Frigidaire's washers. when she got her first kenmore, she thought it wouldn't clean as well because it wasn't " loud enough "

  • AHHHH...

and all these years i thought my neighbors were at IT at all hours of the day!!

and now I find out it was their washing machine!!!

how did they get the washer in their bedroom though I will never know

  • well no the 1-18 spin on high was 850

  • Whatever problems the pulsating Frigidaires (when GM owned the company) may have had, I've never seen one develop a case of "suds lock" (slow spin after oversudsing). Hope you hang on to this rare bird!

  • Well we had a suds lock using Wisk the first time. The best detergent for getting out grease off clothes

  • this is the high level of water?

  • It looks like snow

  • 04/03/01 Strand watching Kingsley's Meadow

  • I'm SO glad I dont have to work on these Rube Goldberg Nightmares any more. Bad seals and water in the ball bearings, one speck of oil on the rollers and it's all over and and oh god the infamous water bellows!... R.I.P.

  • Hun the load was fine u just did not have the water level to where should been High level are max-level high and it would had been fine

  • When it starts the wash, it shocked me because of the agitation speed!!!

  • How fast does it spin?

  • 750 rpm is my best guess.

  • Comment removed

  • Maybe 1000rpm is my guess. not my best so far.

  • about 880 rpm

  • You really have that thing overloaded. You are getting almost no turnover with 7 pair in there. I wouldn't do more than 4 at a time in that machine.

  • I realized that I in fact loaded it incorrectly. I should have balled the jeans up more rather than lay them out. It was my first time using it so I didn't know better.

  • Of course it looks a little perverted. But that's the charm for a GM Frigidaire. They don't call it "the sinner's washing machine" for nothing! Heh heh heh

  • I would love to own one of these machines. I remember my grandmother had one and i would watch it for hours. I need to find one because it was the best washer ever. Fridgeair should make this one again.

  • They stopped production because this machine was a pain in the a** to repair and to build. Another reason would be when Frigidaire was sold White consolidated Incorperated.

  • Excuse me White consolidated industries.

  • I vividly recall the first tiime I saw such a washer in a couple of 1977 commercials for D18's comparing their unique "up-and-down" agitations to a 'back-and-forth" of a "best selling brand's best washer" which was that of a Kenmore dual-action.

The second commercial was when they put a gym sock in each of those washers to show how quickly they go.

BTW, how slow did the pulsating work on "delicate" cycle, and how did the cool-down process work in D-18's?

  • My Aunt had a top-of-the-line I-18. I always thought the Fridgidaire had the best rollover of any top loader....untill I saw a couple of videos of the Philcomatic with the high-frequency agitator. They were by far the best.

  • I actually like the older Unimatics and Pulsimatics from like 1962 and older. They seem to have much better turn over than the later 60's and 70's Frigidaires. Too bad they don't make them like this anymore.

  • My mother had one of these in the 60's. By the time it went out she went back to a Filter-Flo GE. True, it didn't wrinkle the clothes like the Frigidare, but she said that machine cleaned better than any washer she had. Plus, it was fun to watch! I agree--my FL isn't as well-made as these older mechanical machines by a mile.

  • If I ever get a 1-18, I will maintain, cherish, and keep it for the rest of my life. If I move into a place without a hookup, the couch goes and the washer becomes a part of my furniture until I find another place. If I end up homeless, I'll pay for its storage in a climate controled environment. Today's HE machines are trash. Old GM Frigidaires like this are priceless.

  • In 1971, the first year of the 1-18 models, there was one model that offered 1,000 rpm, spin speed.

  • Nice piece of machinery... No reason not to wash clothes in these machines.. The machines in recent decades have been a giant scam like any other product that has to continually re invent itself, and get gimmicky...today washers are way over priced, way over technical, way over the top..good looking though.Tooo much that can go wrong, and repair costs are just a rip off joke, They need to remain simple.

  • @tjfreak Front loaders are far simpler than top loaders. What's simpler than a DC motor with no transmission?

The problem isn't inherent in the front loader style, the problem is poor design and poor electronics manufacturing.

Don't get me wrong, I like top loaders, but there's nothing complicated about front loaders.

  • Is the number of pulses faster with the 1-18 faster that the unimatics?

  • Beautiful machine you have there. Agreed with having this over a temperamental FL POS any day.

I had to do some laundry at a friends house and that have a Kenmore FL. I have an old Hoover twin tub as my main washer, and as I was washing clothes earlier, I noticed how much soap was left in the clothes from the FL. The water was sudsing up before I ever added soap. As far as I can see the only thing that the FL's have on their side is their water usage, which I can take or leave.

  • You were using too much detergent in your Hoover washer, that it didn't rinse it all out. If your clothes sud in a front loader before any detergent is added, then your washer isn't rinsing it all out. I've had my front loader for nearly 10 years, and never experienced the sudsing problem when I went from TL to LF washers to wash my clothes. Suds do matter on a FL washer.

Some people I know are known to oversud their washers (TL or FL).

  • ...I think you have that backwards? I was referring to the amount of soap left in the clothes after a "regular" load in a Kenmore Front Loader. The soap was left in the clothes after washing in the front loader. There is nowhere near that much soap in the Hoover after 2 spin-rinses, and if I deep-rinse there is none. Congrats on 10 years of service from your FL machine, you're doing much better than many I've seen. I'm just not a fan of over-priced equipment that doesn't function as advertised.

  • I've been using front loaders a lot longer than most people have. If it weren't at home, then it was at the laundromat. The problem I see with most people who use front loaders is use too much detergent in them. Regular detergent needs to be cut back by 1/2 to 2/3 to keep the suds under control. Today's HE detergents aren't necessarily low sudsing, as I've had more problems with suds from certain HE detergents than from most regular detergents. I miss Ajax, as that was true low suding.

  • Those 1-18's are awesome washers!

  • I agree.

  • what happen to the cap on the agiator on the first pin and onwards

  • Um, I appreciate your effort in getting one that is Harvest Gold. But be honest, would you really wash your clothes in that.

The clothes aren't even moving and it sounds like they are being shredded.

That is a lot of noise, energy, and with the overflow rinse, water, compared to todays front-loaders.

And I'm thinking the front loader would get them cleaner.

Still, personally, I like the color. Love the colored appliances from the 70's.

  • Mmm...yah I'd rather wash in this than a plastic FL. I had an He4t and it's an expensive piece of junk. Cost me thousands in repairs and didn't clean all that well. My water bill doesn't cost nearly what that FL did so I'll stick with what I've got now. And yah, hehe, the color is pretty nice too.

  • Well, I grew up using one of these and this one is overloaded - when properly loaded the clothes actually move in a circular motion very effectively. These were known to wash VERY well, but also to be VERY hard on clothes. The most common failure was for something to puncture the bellows that allowed the up and down movement of the "pumper" agitator and then the unit would leak.

  • we have used front loaders and top loaders and you know what the clothes come out equally clean in either machine.

the washing machine sloshes the clothes through water and your detergent softens the water so the water can pass through your clothes but its the WATER that cleans the clothes not the soap or the machine.

As long as the water can pass through the clothes they will be cleaned.

If the clothes don't move well in the machine thats different and that can effect how clean they come out

  • @dayhappen Why are stupid American so obssed with these damn front loaders HE washers, they are nothing more that thousands of dollars worth of junk, and the cleaning is really not that geat, i dont give a damn what Consumer Reports says, and for that matter, they are biased.. I had a $1700.00+ FL machine that was a NIGHTMARE, look on the net and see for yourself the nightmares that people are having with thesr front loaders

  • awesome i need to get one of these

  • The suds looks like snow.
