He is the Commander and Patron of a Regiment here in Canada, for which I hear he takes the roll seriously, it may surprise many including the Brits but His Highness the Duke of Edinburgh is the is above the Governor General as the head of the Armed Forces. All Royals are technically Canadian Citizens and hold rank in our Military.

It would make for an interesting read to find out the historic connection between all Militaries under the Crown.

@top6ear I've got a horrible feeling that if they took it seriously they could easily outnumber most national armies (except the Chinese). On the other hand, I suspect they are only allowed the right to command all those regiments on the understanding that they don't actually exercise the privilege.

@top6ear Prince Charles is not a commander or patron, he is Colonel-in-Chief of several Canadian Regiments. The Duke of Edinburgh is not above the Governor General and certainly not head of the armed forces of Canada or anywhere else. He is Colonel-in-Chief of several Canadian regiments. @broadband01 Well I am not a expert but the Royals are Automatic Citizens of any Commonwealth country. I believe the uniform holds his rank that he has in England I believe that the Governor General is the head of the Army here.

I suppose it's a sign of respect, also to show that he represents Canada. Does this relate to my earlier comment? If so, I fail to see how. Before, I was simply saying that we can choose to call her what ever we like, though it is more respectful to call her the Duchess of Cornwall. Perhaps this is how it relates?

As the Wife of The Duke of Cornwall she has the title of Duchess of Cornwall, and of course as the wife of The Prince of Wales she is Camilla Princess of Wales: Camilla has each and every title that corresponds with the Prince's titles: Parker-Bowles is the family name of HRH's first husband.

So nice to see TRH receive such a warm Canadian welcome, and interesting seeing HRH look back on her Canadian family roots: Both French and British Canadian.
