  • lol @ the fool who left his car on.

Anybody who knows anything about car batterys knows that if you leave even your car lights on for a whole night it would drain the battery completely. And the car would need a battery replacement.

  • the problem with turning off/on is that it tends to reduce the lifespan of devices, often moreso than if the device had just been left on for the same duration. When you consider the massive amounts of energy that goes towards producing some of these devices, shortening their lifespan is equivalent to wasting energy too. Leaving 200W PC on for an entire year costs about $100, but the PC could cost $2000, a cost which mainly consists of the energy and labour required in the PC's manufacture.

  • Awesome video! Good advice for all of us. Besides helping the environment, it just plain could save us all a lot of money.

  • Thanks, Umbra! You don't suck.

  • Leave it to MythBusters to have the final word...

  • Actually, there's one little issue with this. Mythbusters looked into this too, and determined that there is a power surge with most household lighting. However, the "surge" of power was equivalent to a couple of seconds of burn time at most. So it IS less efficient to flip the power switch every second, but most times it's better to turn them off.

If you're really concerned about "surge" energy, LED bulbs have the lowest surge power (about 1 nanosecond of burn time).
