JFMP. OK. Colombia.
Something here it's wrong!! Pitahaya(Pee-ta-Haa-Ya)it's spanish for Dragon Fruit,and "Pitaya it's a different fruits,tunas(cactus pear) and pitayas are relative.pitahaya it's not pitaya.please!!
The problem in trying to cross-pollinate to create new hybrids (as this man is doing) is that the different species often don't bloom on the same night. I too have been doing this for a few years, but only for my own interest and not to try to create supeior fruit. My interest is, and always has been, the beautiful flowers of the night-blooming cereus.
Dragonfruit (or pitaya) have only been sold commercially in the USA since about 2000, but they seem to be more common each summer.
The common night-blooming cereus (Hylocereus undatus) was introduced here in Hawaii in 1830, and even though it was widely grown, fruit were very rare. That's because the plants were all just cuttings from the same original one, and the flowers therefore didn't pollinate each other.
I'm eating some right now for the first time. To be honest, it looks better than it tastes actually. It's a bit bland (I'm eating the white ones) but I do quite like it. If only for the look of it. Weird texture too.
But I have to know...WHAT SONG IS THAT? It's so beautiful.
Here is a good Pitya "Dragon Fruit" video! It's funny, and educational but not all true... But anyways it gives you a good look of how a dragon fruit taste, it's texture, and colors! Visit my page and click on my video!
Well, I don't know about LA, but in Holland you can find them at every China Town. They're also cultivated in south-east Asia...give it a try, good luck! Btw, I have one in the fridge!!!
I just discovered the Dragon Fruit as well! And I love it. I'm going to grow some seeds for fun. I made a video of my family trying it. It's uploading right now.
