Helpers, or slaves... are usually placed mid-train... a DPU, or Dedicated Pusher Unit...are usually stationed at certain points along the route on which the train may need a push up a hill, these DPU's just couple to the end of the train and give it a push...
Excellent, Charles. I'll be doing the Moab Local/Soldier Summit in April, and should have a fancy $3500 camera by then.. : - ) Hope all is well out there and if you want me to send you my work schedule I can; if you are eying coming out here!
@Gooberwalla: On the ex-Southern Pacific units (the dark grey ones), the color around the engine number on each of the cabs is yellow. That's how Union Pacific renumbered these units, and the nickname for this method is "patched".
@cchan006 Thanks for that explanation. Now I shall know what "patch" means. Those SP AC-4400 units bring back sweet memories from the 90s when I'd see SP unit trains, replete with helpers, hauling coal on the Rio Grande route in CO, between Minturn and Pueblo. Love that SP gray livery.
@Rocketboy1950: Less than Echo Canyon. Few BNSF's on trackage rights, MRONY/MNYRO which are Denver to SLC manifests, Utah Railway trains, this coal train, and Amtrak #5 and #6, the California Zephyr, but not all of them during daytime.
@cchan006 Thanks, good to know. I just might get my lazy ass over to the US for some railfanning now that the Aussie dollar is on equal footing with yours.
@mafarnz: I actually caught an unpatched SP 177 on the MRONY during this visit, 2nd in consist, and chased it between Helper and Price. But yeah, Price Canyon and Soldier Summit's are great locations for sure.
@stlgevo51: The abandoned town of Castle Gate is further east (where the train was coming from), but the rock formation you see is probably what inspired the name.
@generationll: There are some coal mines in Utah, and this one originated from Savage, UT heading to Searles, CA, so it's actually not a PRB coal train out of Wyoming.

I thought a locomotive is a locomotive. What makes one a helper and what is a DPU?

Great location. How many trains a day would normally pass through here ?

Where was the coal headed?Undoubtably this was coming out of the PRB area.
