Did you guys not even watch the show? He was SUPPOSED to die, or else the helicopter wasn't going to come on the island and they weren't going to get saved.
Charlie could not have died by the way... Water could only have filled the room up to the top of the window as the air would not be able to escape. The window is large enough for him to have swam out, back to the boat. I'm not suggesting that Charlie is alive, I'm saying they made some mistakes on this scene.
also people don't usually survive that kind of crash, no such thing as smoke monsters, living forever, time traveling islands or polar bears jumping through space. the whole show is a bunch of unrealistic bullshit, that's what makes it so awesome.

Charlie saw Mikhail with the grenade, and knew that if he didn't seal the door shut to keep the water inside, it would flood the entire station and both he and Desmond would drown. He also had to keep Desmond out of the sealed room, obviously.
And from the looks of it, the reason why he had to stay inside was because the door only deadbolts and seals from the INSIDE, so if he had run out and tried to shut it from the outside, the force of the explosion and resulting pressure from the water blast would've still opened the door and flooded the entire station, killing them both. Charlie sacrificed himself so that only one of them had to die.
