Since nobody else has mentioned it yet, the Peter and Sydney joke is from the "Maltese Falcon" which this episode is in part a parody of. Don Adam's assumes Humphrey Bogart's role, and Peter and Sydney are representing actor Peter Lorre (a small man) and actor Sydney Greenstreet (a large man). In the episode they switched the names Peter and Sydney to the opposite character which is why Smart confuses the names.
