Hey andy, sorry about that buffer. That sucks. I had a similar experience with my jhs mr. magic. it worked fine for a few months then one day my signal sounded super thin. I had to send it in two times to get the thing working again. When I called about it they explain that it was a bad transistor that blew and had to be replaced. Maybe that's what you're buffer needs?

You can use your ernie ball vp as an expression without getting it modded. There's a vid on the strymon channel. I think they use a TRS cable.

@Silverspring777 it's not just about sounds. it's about reliability and features too. AC30 had problems, and I didn't use half of the features on either of those amps. The Matchless is simple (no features I don't use), built like a tank and sounds way better.
