There had been some radio transmissions in TFX that I wasn't able understand for years. Using DosBOX's audio capture feature, I transcribed and put them on my site. Go to zekienesakkan d.o.t com and in the left menu, click "Blog in English." There you can read all of the voice effects used in TFX.
fucking hell,...my student times!. used to play this for hours and hours on my flatmate's 486. When you ejected at low altitude you could see your body splattered with blood. we used to position just underneath the refuelling tanker and eject against it. class.
Also, did anybody else get bored and just fly straight down at the runway, eject at the last second, and splatter all over the pavement?
I haven't seen an air sim do that since. I want a modern air sim to have that rendered in game, where you eject and splatter on the ground in a big red smear. Your head should also pop off and fly a few meters. Make it a mini-game to see whose head gets the best roll distance.
Holy crap i tottaly forgot about this game, came here through 29 retaliator. I remember the camview in tfx so you could freelook from the cockpit. That was epic!
Ah, hearing that music start up was like arriving at the promised land... But getting there was tough, especially trying to free up those last few K of ram in config.sys.
It's not just you. If you think about it, this game has far more to offer than, for example, Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X. Newer games generally only win in graphics and sound department (obviously), but in terms of ideas and originality, games like TFX or Deus Ex or Fallout or Alone In The Dark (the first one from 1992) are on the same level (or even better) than today's high budget titles.
I used to play this game on my father's company laptop back in the time. I was always waiting for him to come back from office to start playing. Tons of hours of great fun. Just to learn how to land your plane was something. I remember the night mission with the stealth-117 bomber... And the soundtrack was amazing. Great memories!
I cherish the days I've had with DOS and SoundBlaster deeply. The SoundBlaster, Adlib and Gravis Ultrasound sound cards have given me a great experience, feels great to hear them again.
@Stilgarsan Hawx and AC aren't flight sims, they are just arcade.
In TFX you have to learn how to land, how to flight, you have FUEL, gravity problems.
The problem of these new games is that they are too easy because thats what people like, easy things... in hawx and AC you have ilimited fuel, like 100 missiles or even more, the pilot is a robot that gravity doesn't affect him, there is no gears, etc. TFX demands 11MB of memory and it's more realistic than these (boring)new Flight sims games.
sweet childhood memories. I never forget when I made my first landing on a carrier or my first midair fueling :D ... and at that time I couldn't read one word in english.
How can I start this game ? I'm already have the DOS BOX, but always when I go to start the game, the progam doesn't complete the operation. Does anybody knows how to execute this game ? Plz help me. thanks
@SirFlag Yes, you need clear Read only attribute for all files in the TFX directory and all subdirectories. As well I recommend to set the directory rights to "Everyone" recursively for TFX directory and subdirectories (full rights). But I guess your problem is in read only files.
Shame that this video clip uses the Microsoft Midi most basic sounds.. if you put the sounds on best quality the soundtracks to this game are brilliant.
My childhood right here. When everybody was learning their multiplication tables I was playing this shit. Hearing the theme once again almost reduced me to tears.
Yeah I was never able to land on the bloody carrier either. The one time I lucked out and actually landed on it, I remember jumping out of my chair and cheering.
As for the game's difficulty itself, well I played it A LOT so eventually I got the hang out of almost everything. But that took a looong time.
Yeah, I know what you mean. That's some nice luck though, in the early stages I could barely get off the bleeding carrier! I remember when I'd pull off the edge of the runway, and slowly pull up, thinking "I'm off! I'm off!" only to fall backwards into the sea
@DeathwishXIII LOL, so it wasn't just my imagination, the pilot does say 'Looks like the lizard!'. All these years of anguish have finally be quashed.
This game was incredible. I got it for free with a video card and i played it on a 400mhz P2. The music in this game made u feel like your flying in top gun.
Sorry buddy, but wasn't this game only released for the A1200/4000 featuring the AGA Chipset? I had an A1200 with 2 meg of Chip Ram and 16 meg of Fast Ram with an additional 68030 accelerator running at 50Mhz and it STILL ran really slow! .. An A500 running at 7Mhz would not have cut it, also due to the fact it had the OCS/ECS Chipset.
I've recorded a video of this game running on my Amiga 1200 with 68060 cpu and 32 meg RAM. It's up there in the video responses. With the detail set fairly high, it's painfully slow, and not much better with it set low.
Needless to say, there's no way in hell an A500 could run the game.

They made many spiritual successors after TFX. In '96, DID released EF-2000.. the year after that, F22:ADF, then in another year, Total Air War.
Flights sims in general are thin these days.. you can get the original F4 and mod it (I'd rather do that than get AF) or LOMAC. But TFX had its own feel to it; reminded me of a much better Jetfighter II (3 and beyond were terrible)..
Yes, I already fond out that the newest these days is LOMAC and I got it for about 10 bucks, but it doesnt give me the feeling I had with TFX because. Maybe I'll try Falcon4 if I find it. They say it has a better campaign..
What a pity that just shooter after shooter gets released and most Air Combat games are Arcade and WW2...
i remember being so stoked when i first landed the jet in this game, such an achievement; and cracking up when i ejected upside down near the ground to have the pilot splat on the ground. such an awesome game.
I ejected upside-down all the time as well, hilarious.. also, weren't there farmers with shotguns on the ground as well (seemingly a nod to Flight of The Intruder)? I know there were AA soldiers, but I seem to remember the farmer thing also. Either way, many laser guided bombs were dropped on clothing-armored targets.
The inferno's demo video was included in the original CD of TFX, along with the high quality soundtracks. The soundtracks are great, and I still listen to them from time to time.
Man what a recognition :D, I still have it. Spend last week a few hours to get it running in win98, It runst OK without sound. But TFX is very picky on the Soundblaster. I use DOS mode SB 128, with full SB 16 emulation. Music is choppy :(, Great vid ;)
God, that theme music. Used to play this loads on a 486 DX66, fantastic game. Dad bought it new for me when it was released, 'coz I was a right royal fan of Flight of the Intruder.
Great fun and very advanced.
Always remember the really sad music over the KIA or MIA screens!
I also used to play it on a 486DX2/66. I remember that I upgraded my computer to shorten the loading time :) It used to take exactly 1 minute with 4MB of RAM, and I managed to take the time down to 30 secs with 8MB :)
Congrat! for the video, I played this game in 1995/96 for the first time and I stayed many nigths in front of the screen, (that me be is the result to use glasses hehehe). Well the thing is i can´t play now this game because apears an error, (demo file missing). Can anyone tell me how can i resolve this problem?
I just never knew there was a CD edition...and yes, the manual which gave handy hints like telling you you've got a brake chute and flares/chaff etc :P

I loved this game soooooo hard!!!! Is there any newer game thats just a little bit like this?
"BANDITS BANDITS BREAK BREAK"
Those AMRAAM were really the ultimate "fire and forget" beasts.

Arecibo 3 years ago
Yes, I already fond out that the newest these days is LOMAC and I got it for about 10 bucks, but it doesnt give me the feeling I had with TFX because. Maybe I'll try Falcon4 if I find it. They say it has a better campaign..
What a pity that just shooter after shooter gets released and most Air Combat games are Arcade and WW2...
BTW: You can download TFX at abandonia :)

This game was quite easy to play with a mouse... on a 486DX of course.

i remember being so stoked when i first landed the jet in this game, such an achievement; and cracking up when i ejected upside down near the ground to have the pilot splat on the ground. such an awesome game.
jizzninja 3 years ago
I ejected upside-down all the time as well, hilarious.. also, weren't there farmers with shotguns on the ground as well (seemingly a nod to Flight of The Intruder)? I know there were AA soldiers, but I seem to remember the farmer thing also. Either way, many laser guided bombs were dropped on clothing-armored targets.

Do you have more videos of this game?

The inferno's demo video was included in the original CD of TFX, along with the high quality soundtracks. The soundtracks are great, and I still listen to them from time to time.
TFX was revolutionary.

This is one of the best flight sims made. Virtual cockpit, camera views.
Someone make a video of Inferno - same as TFX only space sim. If you like this, definitely check inferno.

Man what a recognition :D, I still have it. Spend last week a few hours to get it running in win98, It runst OK without sound. But TFX is very picky on the Soundblaster. I use DOS mode SB 128, with full SB 16 emulation. Music is choppy :(, Great vid ;)

Take a look at ebay. Bought a copy of mine for 1 euro, just for the music... I think it was worth it.

God, that theme music. Used to play this loads on a 486 DX66, fantastic game. Dad bought it new for me when it was released, 'coz I was a right royal fan of Flight of the Intruder.
Great fun and very advanced.
Always remember the really sad music over the KIA or MIA screens!
LashoutUK 4 years ago
I also used to play it on a 486DX2/66. I remember that I upgraded my computer to shorten the loading time :) It used to take exactly 1 minute with 4MB of RAM, and I managed to take the time down to 30 secs with 8MB :)

Congrat! for the video, I played this game in 1995/96 for the first time and I stayed many nigths in front of the screen, (that me be is the result to use glasses hehehe). Well the thing is i can´t play now this game because apears an error, (demo file missing). Can anyone tell me how can i resolve this problem?
Thanks and sorry about my english!!!

Yeah, I had the CD aswell. It was great because it brought the manual in the game.
deguimeraUSA 3 years ago
I just never knew there was a CD edition...and yes, the manual which gave handy hints like telling you you've got a brake chute and flares/chaff etc :P

Yeah, I *love* the CD and the music on it. Still some of my favorite game music ever.
