  • Gibraltar pedals are good

  • Hi all. I've only been playing around on drums for a couple weeks, but have in the last hour been attempting this double kick, and it's starting to make sense (of course i still need a ton of practise). to start with, plant your foot on flat ground and lift your foot. now place the ball only of your heel down with toes up, then as your heel hits the ground, roll down the rest of your foot (and you'll work out the dynamics of what's going on) heel is one kick, toe is the second kick

  • does this work with any double bass pedal? and what is the best pedal for this? thanks

  • @jwgx16 yes it does, but if you have larger feet it just may take some adjustments to get the motion. The best pedals are longboards (Axis,Trick etc.) only downfall is the price. Personally use the Axis Laser pedals for quite awhile now and they were very similar to my X's just smoother and more fluidity. Have a good one man \m/

  • Does the length of the footboard matter on the heal toe technique?

cause my footboard just gets room with my entire foot, and i tend to press a

bit harder with my heal to get the same consistant sound.

  • @MeatWhistle44 Not really, but it can help depending on where you place your foot/feet. Yes, in the beginning "overdo" it to ensure each hit is solid and equal. Practice very slowly and with a metronome. If you want in-depth drum lessons I can give a more detailed explanation, just message me. Hope that helps! Have a good one \m/

  • Damn my Big feet...

  • @TheCJ279 Just go slowly bro, in time it will be no problem.

  • @misanthropic51 Lol yeah i'm having problems with this... size 15 feet

  • FOR ALL PEOPLE WITH BIG FEET LEARNING HEEL TOE!!!

this does not mean literally heel toe! its a middle foot drop and one the rebound you catch it with your toe with makes a double stroke per stroke if im making sense... thumbs up and also watch other heel toe technique videos so you will learn the way i am explaining! please thumbs up and like my band on facebook at ostiumofficial

thanks... please thumbs up so others can read

  • my foot size is 13 and i cant !!! :(

  • holy shitt. i just ordered a sound percussion double pedal. i got the heel toe down for my right foot, gotta work on my left now.

  • @badfish42092 sick man!

  • So I saw you used to play with eliminators. Did you use this same technique with those pedals? The footboard seems way to short for me. Nice video though man!

  • @dosplunder yes, it just takes some time to get used to but practicing 2hrs a day for month or so should make it more comfortable. Peace

  • umm my foot size is 14.

    and im still growing.

    fuck

  • i love your bass drums sounds, what triggers and module you usin? and im jealous you have axis

  • i've always done it with the toe and it wasnt like this though nice footwork btw man im def gonna use this method

  • @teague89 Right on man glad it helped! Will have vid up soon with newest project Incongruous, the most demanding and technical group I've played with so far and this helps for certain time changes etc. Releasing new cd and videos soon with InCo, take care and have a good one bro!

  • wow i've always done this with the toe but this is better and faster than my approach nice footwork man

  • wow

  • your way of doing heel toe is so easy....im trying to do heel toe on pearl eliminator pedals....i dont want axis long boards....i know i dont need those to play fast

  • @TheUnconsecrated i had eliminators too and LOVED them but when they finally gave out I got offered a good deal on the long boards so I got them because of that & the ekits for PERFECT triggering. What you play is what you hear, including every mistake clear as day lol Just start off slow and do it for as long as you can at least 1hr to 2hrs feet (hands too if u want) a day with metronome at 100bpm and then increase in increments of 10-15 or w/e is comfortable to u, take care man, Peace!

  • Hey mianthropic51. I'm getting some of those new Mapex Falcons and I was wondering if those footboard's are long enough for me to start learning how to play heel toe?

  • @xxxPinkyGSterxxx totally possible man and i suggest starting with a metronome and s l o w. Just like double strokes with hands just work on it for at least 2 hours a day. I do this everyday both heel toe and heel up, if I don't it gets sloppy real quick!

  • @misanthropic51 Thanks for suggestion dude =] I'll be sure to work on it and see what becomes of it.

  • @xxxPinkyGSterxxx Most def. bro, good luck with you're playing! Take care, Peace

  • long boards are cheating how the hell can i do this on regular pedals

  • So are you doing RRLLRRLL on the drum or is it still RLRLRLRLRL?

  • @KeysUpOnTheTable yes your right RRLLRRLL take care

  • Great vid. Can you go any faster than that with heel toe? Just a question.

  • @richmondyayarea ya soundclick monsieur mango. or incongruous or evisceration check the description for links of my work. It's decently fast.

  • freakin awesome! THANKS!

  • what is your suggestion to someone who doesnt have a longboard pedal? I play an iron cobra rolling glide. I took the toe stops off and I have to slam down with my heel way too hard.

  • @Zildjian528 this method only works for longboards, the true heel toe method doesnt require you to actually strike with the heel.

in a nutshell its like playing heel up for the first stroke, then as you bring your foot up for another "heel up stroke" you push forward to hit, using more of the muscles in your ankle. i'll reply in a minute with a vid on it

  • well i use this method with iron cobras so... your argument is invalid

  • i have the iron cobra power glides and i can do it it just takes a ton of practice

  • @Zildjian528

theres a decent vid alot more in detail

    watch?v=bMGCT-J-_N0

  • Ok it's totally possible, and I have done it on those exact pedals many times. The trick is to keep your feet solidly in place so your toes don't hit the chain. In plain english it's just doubles but with you're feet! R-R-L-L:) and YES you do strike with the heel it's the first count on the right foot followed by upper part of the right foot for the second stroke.

  • ivve got size 10.5 feet, how can i do this on a regular pedal?

Ive tried, but all that happens is the chain ends up digging between my toes because my foot is move so far up the pedal

  • @parkoanime Damn, feel you there! Ok it's possible just takes getting used to. You have to start off very slowly on each foot and sort of curl the front of your foot down on each pedal totry and keep your foot in place as well as to help not hitting the chain. Hope that helps, take care bro

  • Comment removed

  • @parkoanime Im using an iron cobra jr, and ALOT of people say that pedal sucks for heel toe. But i pulled the foot board back, drilled 2 new holes and i have a 10 1/2 inch footboard now. So always check to see if you can modify it cause sometimes, the pedal just isnt made for your foot to do that.

  • are you doing doubles with each foot once you speed it up like RHRT-LHLT or are you doing RHLH-RTLT?

  • @MoltovSamson Exactly, I am doing doubles with each foot just as you would do with the hands. Pretty simple, just exhausting at first!

  • @misanthropic51 It is exhausting! I just started double bass and it burns xD

  • @visara1313

i bet slayer's drummer can do that. insanely fast double bassing is the only thing he can do good anyways

  • Listen To Derek Roddy's Double bass, That is SOME FAST SHIT

  • ha ha ha ha Dave lombardo is fucking brutal. Lars Ulrich can only dream of being half as good as Dave. The only thing Lars is good at is sucking dick and inflating his own ego. At least Dave can remember his own songs, unlike Fagtallica.

    *points and laughs at you*

  • @xthatfatguyx can you even make a good joke? Fagtallica seriously? i know lars was a dick over the whole napster deal, but he is a good drummer

  • @Kratos9945

    no. he isnt.

  • @xthatfatguyx *laughs at childish reply*

  • @xthatfatguyx

You probably don't even play drums if you think that Lars sucks and that metallica can't remember thier own songs. Yeah, Dave is better, but saying that Lars sucks is really immature. At least they are both confident about their own playing. You'd probably shit your pants trying to play double bass drums.

  • @xthatfatguyx

Any chance that you're talking out of your arse because you can't hear the double bass, and you're acting all cool and going along the flow of Slayer fanboys?

Please listen to Metallica's drum tracks before commenting.

Their recording quality was shit, and the bass drum was basically inaudible.

Also, if you can play Dyers Eve or Battery on drums 100% perfect, then I'll give in.

    Until then, fuck up.

  • nice peddles :D

  • Awsome dude that really helped

  • Lol visara...i can do 16th note doubles at 200bpm no problem. whats so crazy about that? theres a lot of people who can do that, AND faster. just because i said i can do doubles with one foot at 200bpm doesnt mean i can do doubles at 400 with both lololol. assuming my left foot is just as fast as my right, my doubles would amount to 16th notes at 200bpm just with the extra double to give it straight 16th notes (4 instead of 2). before you say i cant do something, maybe think a little.

  • hi there! nice video!

i have a question: what pedals do you use?

my drummer uses the Iron Cobra.

he has problems with practicing heel-toe because the pedals are too small & his feet too big.

do you guys know any pedals that are "bigger"?

  • Yo man know EXACTLY what you mean. Axis long boards give extra length to the pedal to account for larger feet. OR... just practice like crazy every single day. It's more than possible to do this with any pedals just a bit of a pain if you have bigger feet.

  • i have the pearl demon pedals, and ive adjusted them to longboards (they have that ability) but i still cant do it, i have fuckin size 12 feet but like idk how to get it clean

  • Listen to young blood and just go s l o w! Practice makes perfect bro and in no time you will have it down.

  • I prefer the slide technique. Its just as fast (I can do doubles at 200bpm with one foot). The nice thing about the slide technique is you can do it on ANY pedal without even hesitating. Start slow, work your way up in speed and endurance. But like I said, its nice to jump on anyones kit and be able to do the slide...any pedal any time.

  • omg dude ur feet seem to like move so fast that yea its blurry and stuff on the video nicee!! i'm still workin on the double bass man i think its my pedal and usin a electronic trigerr pad thats rubber to so yea think thats it too

  • 1:08 woooahhh hey man i have like the taye double bass pedal, and idk if its me, probably is but i cant play fast double and yea it seems like my left pedal just doesnt do right can you help

  • I just started doing this on my iron cobras. It's been a few weeks and I'm getting pretty fast and even.....but! I had to stop watching this man because what he is doing is PRO +. I needed to just go slow and make the beats even. If you start off slow...you will end up going faster whether you like it or not. THEN!!! Maybe!!!!! When can hope to piss with this guy! I don't know him, but yeah....HE"S A BADASS.

  • Thanks for the kind remarks man! Have a good one

  • Honestly man do as I said below start off SLOW. It may sound weird but when you begin to get used to the technique the flow will come easier and the motion will be fluid. 150 bpm for 4 mins throughout the day increase speed each week = very fast. Hope that helps.

  • lower the footboard

    it worked with mine

  • Good Greef! I guess you can move on to practicing rudiments with your ear lobes! BECAUSE YOU GOT THIS COVERED! LOL (What kind of pedals are those?)

  • Axis Longboards

  • hm... good video and good drumming... but only one thing... the axis is touching the head from the bass drum thats not good... i don´t meant the beater...

  • Not touching, just close. If it were touching it would have melted within 30 minutes. Thanks for watching

  • You really aren't doing a heel stroke, it's more like ball-toe.

  • It appears this way on camera but it's really just heel-toe.

  • No, what I'm saying is you are exaggerating the stroke when breaking it down slowly.

  • lucky you got a axis pedal

  • its not that hard to learn, just start slowly and work on it. the hardest thing is to play this technique clean in high speed.

  • @TheSacrileger what do you suggest when you have short boards?

  • @AIC2374 Start off at a very slow tempo. The easiest explanation I can think of, is that this is just like doubles with your hands, RR, LL, RR, LL ... will sound choppy at first but with time and practice to a metronome, you will be there in no time!

  • Sick....I gotta learn this. Canine says the motion is the main thing. I hope thats true because it sounds impossible, it's looks easy....but it sounds like unreal!

  • nice. clean. yes.

  • THe volume is really low. Specially on a laptop.

  • N1 :D

    Greetz from germany!

  • how did you make your bass drum sound that good? what drumhead did you use? what did you put inside the bass drum?

  • Thats not how to do heel toe.. the first hit isnt from your heel, you don't need giant ass footboards to do it correct. For a proper demonstration, check out Jared Falks tutorial

  • Big ass footboards

  • Big ass footboards you got, my dude. Mine are DW5000 - and they're short. lol.

  • does it take lots of leg/foot strength to do this??

  • not really. once you get the motion down it doesn't take much.

  • Also, does it depend on the spring tension?

  • I play it with my springs about medium tension. i don't like them to loose cuz you don't get enough rebound but if they're too tight then it can get hard to do it cuz it's hard to press down. so i'd say about medium tension.

  • oh okay

    thanks for the tips ^_^

  • Another thing about how tight your spring tension may be, your legs muscles will develop more quickly (higher tension) or more slowly (lower tension).

Midway would probably be a great balance between rebound and getting a good workout for the muscles you use to play.

  • nice...

  • TRIGGERSSSSSSSSS

  • em i love axis longs.. the basterds where $600

  • drums sound so clear

  • Who makes those longboards?

  • axis

  • for 4 continous strokes do you go

right heel left heel right toe left toe

    or

right heel right toe left heel left toe??

  • right heel right toe left heel left toe

  • Damn good work! Best teaching video ive found!

  • holy shit!

  • Very nice!

  • Heel toe is really cool and all, but I still prefer straight heel up or the flatfoot. like 95% of drummers don't do heel toe technique at all, Just a thought.

  • That's because they can't. If you learn to master it, you can play 50% faster than if you were playing with singles. Mind you 95% of all drummers don't play above 250BPM. Just a thought.

  • so fast.

but you can't do this for long time.

the muscle may easy be tired.

    it's heel toe 's defect.

because i can do this 5 years ago,

so i know what the point.

  • you know what sucks about this. Is that this technique really only works on axis pedals. I know it works on other pedals because Ive seen it before. But I have Eliminators which I love and I cant do that at all. =[

  • try moving slightly backward; doing so the foot becoms less flexible, thus transmitting the motion to the toe. second stroke lifting the ankle. i hope it'll helps you, it worked for me.

  • check out the guy on my favourites he modded his pedal to make it like a longboard.

  • Yup, I was also saying that. You can only do it on longboards, unless you have small feet. There's this kid here in youtube, he did a heel toe on iron cobras, pretty good, but his advantage is that he has small feet so it makes the cobras bigger and longer for him.

  • haha that's cool as fcuk!!

  • all i can say is wow with the heel-toe rolls

    absolutely beautiful

  • i dont know y but it scares me

  • I MUST LEARN THIS!!!!!!! that so so cool! good job

  • what kind of pedals do u have

  • those are axis. probaly the L-2

  • Ok....You guys remember where this came from...trips on each foot- t-h-t or h-t-h Bet t-h-t works better. I WILL do it. The- "alternating double-bass ped-trip" I can see it now...right up there w/ the guy who can levitate himself OFF THE GROUND

(but only when there's no one else in the room!!) and if YOU can't do it---then you just have'nt reached that level of 'perfection'! ha ha ha !I may be old-butI replaced Tommy Aldrige,in Black Oak Arkansas.STILL nothing I can't play.EGO*

  • Big feet, or big kikkin...make your mind up. Serious players-lose the toes.Mine were ruined anyway, from walkin barefoot 'round the kit-stands! %%%%%%% O K -the truth IS, lad--it's all just DUBBED in later, w/ a 15- year old Dr.Rhythm. Yup. Video&live shows are all just 'Foot-Sync' sorry kiddo. And you kids out there-don't mess w/ this-stick to that phat rap...lay-back-Cap!

    Or else you might get ankle-tunnel!!Toe-Heel ain't real.........(easy) O SH*T! I bet trips will work!t-h-t(1 foot)RM

  • @RANDYMEERS333 Were you high when you posted this..? Haha

  • ummm i dont know how to connect my heel toes together

like i can do one heel toe at a good speed but i always mess up connecting to the second one

  • u rock

  • It looks like the direct drive mech is hitting the drumhead *just* before the beater does? I took the clamp off mine which makes positioning easier (as Kollias does) but it think the 'excess beater shaft' that sticks out the bottom might be catching and could ruin the head etc. Hard to tell but worth taping up i guess to save the cost of heads.

  • Yeah it's def hitting as the main pedal upright gets thrust backwards when the beater hits..?

  • Although it looks like it does, it doesn't hit at all luckily!

  • Its very difficult to do this with iRON CoBra pedals Right?

  • Hey great video man, I just have one question tho if u dont mind. Can you do this technique playing heel, heel, toe, toe or do u recommend doing a double stroke on each foot?

    Thx A lot.

  • Just do it like a double stroke man! That's all heel-toe is. It's doubles with your feet.

  • hey would using long boards help? cause the pedals that i have are quite short. they are pdps, but they are only starter pedals. what pedals would u recomend for this type of style?i know that the 9000s are sick and all, but is there something a little cheaper in price?

  • Yes! A lot! the extra 2in of pedal board makes a world of difference. Unfortunately Axis is the cheapest(in price) best longboard. I'm using "cheap" loosely lol. Believe it or not others in the same market are 700+ Hit me up for any questions.

  • Yo, what drum module do you use? And what is the name of the bass drum sample sound?

  • I actually have an Alesis DM4. It does a damn good job if you ask me. The sound I use are either "fusion" for a more realistic sound and "blaster" lol for the all out metal sound. I'll be posting a new vid soon so stay tuned, Thanks!

  • nice im getting an iron cobra. its gonna cost me $375. once i get that my drum set will be worth $2000

  • hehe.,yeaa.,., ANDD ??

  • wauuu

  • what kind of doublebass pedal is that?

  • Axis longboard. i just got some too. really really nice pedals. i use this technique too, but my feet were too long for my other pedals so i could only do this when i used my friends pedals. now i always use it.

  • nicely demonstrated. thanks!

  • Thank you everyone for the awesome comments! Im gonna have new vids up as well as a new cd released with my band "Evisceration" it's technical death metal that will hopefully blow your mind!

  • Awesome band i've heard it in the past.

great technique. could you show us how to set up the spring tension, and beater distance from the beater to the bass drum head.

  • oh....my...

  • You know this is the first video I've seen so far that actually does a good job of explaining what it really is...thank you.

  • Thanks a lot I appreciate it!

  • pretty fast good job

  • Jealousy is a terrible thing, JOCieDC

    great playing btw.

  • It looks like you're hitting your drum head with the thing that on most pedal would be the chain or felt. But on the Axis, it's a metal rod or something

  • dude.... or someone for that matter..... THEACH ME... lol

  • U dont need to use longboards... it's just more comfortable to play with them...

  • o.O nice. i think i need to get axis pedals. i keep kicking the chain with my toes!

  • so you have to use longboards to use this technique?

  • he's using axis xl-2 longboard pedals

  • what kinda of bass drum pedals is he using

  • its an axis

  • i got a question man. iv been workin on this heel toe stuff for lika week, but there too like "doublyy"......like the notes are like duh duh......duh duh.......not how they should be like duhduhduhduh...how do you clear it up to make it more even???

  • yea i agree...how do u do that...i have been working on this too....

do use strength when playing it when u move it u toe up and down?how much stength must one use? or do u relax?

  • Yes that is the beginning stage of heel-toe. This is normal! What you do now is bit by bit increase your tempo. At around 165 is where it will start to get consistent. Practice heel toe for 3 mins solid per tempo. Start where comfortable and then progress. Do this for a total of 30 mins or more a day. Relax and keep the strokes as clean as possible. Good luck guys!

  • misanthropic51, how long did it take to get to your level of heel toe. I'm still having a tough time.

  • I'd say 2 months straight. These videos are pretty old, and now I am around 240-260+ It really is just practice that makes all the difference. Don't be discouraged when it sounds crappy for the first couple weeks or month, because it will get better!

  • Thanks buddy. if you ever consider selling that pedal give me a shout. It's an axis right?

  • NP. And yes they are. If they ever are avail for sale I'll hit you up lol. Thanks

  • Thanks bro. laters.

  • one word>> `DAMM!!

  • ok so what do u suggest, doing each foot "heel right, toe right, heel left, toe left" or switching, "Heel right, heel left, toe right, toe left"? i mess around with dream theater stuff so i really want to learn this.

  • The best way to do it is how i explained it. Think of it like doing doubles but with your feet. Any more questions hit me up, thanks for watching!

  • how do you make your heel toe sound loud??? i do this technique, but i play metal and it's not loud enough to beat a half stack.

  • lol generally its not. You must mic it and or trigger it. Then again the only thing that will cut through a half stack is the cymbals if the drums aren' mic'd/ triggered. Any more questions just ask bro. Thanks for watchin

  • wish i had longboards :(

  • I'm having trouble doing the heel toe method with the new pddp402 double bass pedal I just got. That pedal seems to require lots of power to push it down and just can't seem to do it with my heel. Was able to easily with my old pedal.

  • Try experimenting with the springs on the side. Because of different types of spring, some may need more or less tension than others.
