@dreamdrummen no, he used Tama on images and words and WDADU, he played mapex on Awake and a change of seasons. then he quit using them because he was endorsing a product (Mapex USA) that went off the market. so that meant he was playing clinics and shows on tama, pearl, dw, and even ludwig! but when they recorded Falling into infinity he got an endorsement deal with tama and crated what was known as The Purple Monster.
lol im not going to lie but all drummers who are signed to TAMA always say the same thing about the bubinga that they have the best sound and most attack. its in the contract
@ASStealA8 thats true but he reached an unbelievable high level when he was very young, he graduated from berklee college of music for a reason, you should check out the first dream theater albums and see it by yourself
Mike, single bass drum or double? FYI: Don't tell nobody, but they now make this new fangled device called a double bass drum PEDAL ! ! ! Solves ALL of your problems. You really should look into it ! ! !
@bRadicalmagic1 Hello, did you not watch the video? He does use it, on the right side of the kit. And no it doesn't 'solve all of your problems' it is merely a different approach to double-bass drumming with it's own set of pros and cons.
Most people use double pedals instead of double bass drums because of practical and economical reasons. In matters of sound quality, two bass drums is by far your best choice.
Cool setup I really enjoyed the interview. I play on the MLX series Pearls I bought back in the 80's. I had Octobans in my kit at one point with Tama Techstars. I sold the Tamas a while back and now I'm kicking myself. They were the only electronics back then that used real skins. Now I use the Roland SPD-S with a tom and bass drum pad for a 2nd kit & percussion. I want to add that my daughter bought the lastest Avenge Sevenfold CD & she found Portnoy as being real cool for helping them.
i really really love tama's my first ever kit was a 5 piece tama starclassic and i never left tama's i love them so much that i want to get endorsed by them some day, tama and sabian cymbals is the perfect kit and thats what mike has and his kit sounds beast man
@warimperials in fast two handed sections its faster accent the snare on either the right or left side(depending on your timing) instead of having to double hit with one hand. He could also have them tuned differently like the ones on Neil Peart's kit
who would have anything BAD to say about bubinga shells? they are only the most priceys shells out there! he BETTER love em! haha. if he didnt he would sound like a spoiled prick! hahaha :P ive got the B/B hybrids and they sound pretty amazing in themself. that kit is sick! as are all his kits, MP is THE MAN!
Neil Peart and Mike Portnoy are both virtuous drummers but the difference lies on the styles.
I think Mike Portnoy is the best not only because his skill are out of this world -same with Neil- but also because his style suits with mine, so i feel identified with him.
You know, its a matter of taste.
NEIL PEART & MIKE PORTNOY rule the world of drumming nowadays! Keep rockin man!
If your talking about the two main crashes on the right side of his kit, its because they are heavily hand-hammered. Vault Fierce Crash and HHX-Xtreme Crash. Those are meant to give quick and trashy accents.
It's most likely a combination of the drums, production, and the songs but I've always thought his Mapex kit the best-sounding both in the studio as well as live (the "Awake"/"ACOS" tours from '94-'96). *ESPECIALLY* Mapex's Octobans, made from real wood as opposed to Tama's fiberglass shells: "6:00" has never sounded as good as when MP was on the Mapex kit.
...plus since going back to Tama and his first "Monster" setup... no *ding*. Doing it on the Stax just isn't the same as the Cymbal Disc.
I named my signature snare after my daughter. What I'm saying in effect is that I bang my daughter.
