  • This show was a flop for Judy. It was cancelled after one year. She never made a dime from this show though she had high expectations. She looks great in this video and her voice is awesome.

  • why would anyone hand a bird sheet music and tell them to read it to sing ?

  • Just grand: a study in modulation.

  • Judy Garland looking great and sounding supremely soulful nailing "Just In Time" in a way never before or since...what were they thinking not letting this show run as long as Judy wanted to do it? Clearly in peak form, now on youtube anyone who enjoys a great singer can savor and enjoy this legendary icon who is the greatest ever...Bravo Judy, love and miss you and RIP sweet soulful lady...

  • Judy hits it out of the park!

  • So speacil Judy was- i sure do miss her- cant beleive how peiople and the industry took advantage of her- She was the greatest enterainer of all time and she is still remembered and loved- thank God for DVD

  • Judy Garland was one of a kind, we will not see another like her for another 100 years, Thanks to records and video, she will be with us always

  • That just amazes me that she did not read music .Maybe that is why she is so special. Judy can sing to me all day long!R.I.P. with Phoebe Snow now the 2 of you can make some beautiful music!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @pusspleaser134 Actually, Judy could read music a little because she took piano lessons as a child. She put together the medley with Barbra Streisand herself, so she had to know some basics about music to write that down.

  • Doesn't get better than that!

  • i cant describe the feeling i got when i say this. I love her.

  • She was unbelievable...

  • I think the money makers seen her talent and the fact that no teacher to hit notes !!! HELL no they did not spend a dime on lessons. It was not put down anywhere that she had lessons for singing or reading music.I have not read the books yet maybe one of her daughters really know!!! The story goes she did not read music.I really wonder about that dose anyone out there know for sure email me pusspleaser134@aol.com Still loving you Judy Barb...

  • @pusspleaser134

No, she said in her personal recordings for her never-finished autobiography that she couldn't read music and wasn't very good at counting (musical counting. ) Hell, sing like her and why is there any need to learn to read music?

  • utter wizardry

  • i honestly don't know how she does it-her singing his almost super human! and to watch her perform as she sings this song, you know she feels it!

  • One of my all time favortie moments from THE JUDY GARLAND SHOW. She is prefection......

  • Jolt of JOY, and Judy. Extraordinary Performance, and such-Heart ALLWays. Blessings and Thanks-

  • Ive read and heard that this arrangement was very difficult to sing.... and also read that the original arrangement is actually harder to sing! can somebody tell me which version is true?

  • @less01 The song was written by Jule Styne (music) and Betty Comden and Adolph Green (lyrics) for the musical "Bells Are Ringing," in which it was sung by the brilliant comedienne Judy Holliday, who had a fairly limited vocal range. I've never heard that the original arrangement was more difficult to sing -- it couldn't be, because unlike Judy Garland's arrangement, the original didn't modulate up three half-steps. Garland's is the more difficult -- and the definitive. A thrilling rendition.

  • @ChipL955 ohh very interesting to know but I was refering to the definitive version as the original.. sorry ;) but its interesting how this version is soo powerful and demanding in terms of voice and range and yet the definitive one is considered the hardest and better... could you elaborate on that because I am just a music lover I dont know alot about technique... and what is Modulation?

  • @less01 i'm not sure exactly what ChipL955 is referring to as modulation because in musical terminology, it's taken to mean two things... one version of modulation is referring to a vocal run, or the fast sequential changing of notes, and another is a dynamic term being very good control over the varying volume of notes, usually being for dramatic effect... what i do know is that song is a prime example of perfect belting technique, and that's what makes this version so difficult to sing...

  • @TheDaguerreotypist now that we are on the subject.. I wonder if Judy knew what you are talking about and performed it using technique.. or do you think it was just that her talent and voice were so verstail that she was given the arrangement and she would glide along with it...??

  • @less01 that, i don't know... i know that she never learned how to read music and sang everything by ear... and the belting was probably due to her start in vaudeville where belting was pretty much the only way to be heard... so i'm sure she developed the style there... and later on she was talking to ethel merman and barbra streisand on her show about belting in general... but i'm not sure if she knew about the technical aspects of it all, or if she was just singing the way she knew...

  • @TheDaguerreotypist Did someone explain to you that ChipL55 was referring to key changes when they said "modulation". That is another definition of modulation.

  • @lovelytrix00 okay, a key-change modulation is what it is, but i didn't think there was one of those in here... the only slight differential comes after the tempo picks up a bit, but i didn't think that would qualify as a key change, because all that happened was the notes picked up to a slightly higher (probably a half-step, or less) from the rest of the song... the only thing that changes greatly is the tempo and volume of the notes...

  • (continued) because the song starts out in head-voice then switches to chest voice, and is then belted toward the end, and while the dynamics vary greatly, the notes and key signature show very little variation...

  • @TheDaguerreotypist Ms Garland actually changes key centers 3 times in this arrangement. The first key change comes at the beginning of the repeated chorus. The second comes at the lyrics "I was lost....." and the third occurs right on the words "just in time" after "for love came". The first two are up a half step. The third key change or modulation is especially great because she goes up a whole step instead of a half. It's more difficult. Do have the music score for this exact arrangement?

  • @lovelytrix00 i don't have the score, no... but i'm judging by the sound alone, and while the dynamics and style change three times, the notes seem to have very little differentiation... if you listen carefully between the pitches of the first and second verse; they change very little... after the crescendo, it picks up quite a bit in volume, while the pitch deviates only slightly from the rest of the song, and if it's considered a key-change, i would only consider the last verse to be so...

  • (continued) i think what is happening here is more of a trick or a sort of aural farce... i've heard other people sing this song (not the exact arrangement, but very similar) and when they aren't belting the last portion, the notes and melody stay about the same, but such is the case when people belt, it generally pushes one's voice to a slightly higher pitch considering the volume of air that is expelled in a shorter time....

  • (lastly) then again, i'm not a music teacher, nor do i have an extensive knowledge on anything more than very basic vocal technique so i could be completely mistaken.... lol

  • @TheDaguerreotypist OK, WOW. You're absolutely right that Ms Garland has without a doubt taken this song and transformed it into something that is nothing short of unforgettable. I remember her singing this when I was a small child. It has made a lasting impression on me! No joke, she has made her mark on this song. You'll have to trust me on the technical stuff. I gave you an accurate description of what happens with the keys or tonal centers in the song. I studied music and have a degree.

  • @lovelytrix00 I have to confirm (not that I really need to) that you are completely right.

    Her ear was immaculate.

  • @lovelytrix00 although the one thing i -do- know with the utmost certainty is that this song, with whatever techniques may be employed, is absolutely amazing... i am yet to find another performer who can own a song, and still manage to sell it like judy... ^.^
