Anybody can hear that this tape is stretched, thats why its a half step down. I also have the score and it is CLEARLY in the key of E min NOT Eb min. Composers have NO reason to tune down a classical guitar. They would just write the score in Eb.
The pitch is a semi-tone FLAT. So he might actually be playing it faster if it were up to pitch. (unless he purposefully tuned flat.) Anyone know anything about this?
What is the source? There seems to be a section missing. . .

I'm under the impression that Segovia edited the VL Preludes and Etudes. So, there will be differences from what VL plays and what everybody else plays...
@brtherjohn it's very possible, Ponce's compositions also were edited, some years ago Miguel Alcazar published a book containing the scores based on the originals and they are very different from the publications from schotts
For everybody that doesn't believe its the Maestro himself, this is a recording from 1940. The Choros no 1 is from 1920. There is a cd from SanCtus indeed with these recordings, where he plays alsopiano with the soprano Beate Rosenkreutzer.

its so wonderful to hear this piece by the composer! i cant stand hearing it played anymore because every purest out there wants to sound like Bream or somebody else. Or just making it ridiculously serious. IT IS GUITAR MUSIC! Its a dance piece the way Villa Lobos plays it. Music of the people. Not music of tuxedos and conservatory training. The way he plays the rhythms is so very Brazilian. You just cant notate the subtleties.....
I find it hard to imagine that Villa-Lobos would forget or purposely change the structure of his own work. The ending is vital. Why would the master himself crucify the form of his own work?
In this age of great technology, you might find it hard to believe, but once upon a time, recording was new. It was difficult. Maestro Heitor did not change of forget his own piece. It was somehow lost, and please be thankful that it was not ALL lost.
Don't know but ,I think that's how he would sound..
He plays steel strings ,taking a lot of liberties , phrases like a cellist ,and actually making it a nicer piece with the guitar tuned flat a semitone.
What is strange with this piece ,I found recently, it's opening melody is actually the some times Bellini attributed famous Italian song " fenesta ca lucive"...which some other times called Neapolitan by anonymous..
I wouldn't have realized that, and I don't know anything about gramophone records.. So please tell me: Do you think the original recording was much faster?
Ok sounded like you were challenging me. First off, this video is flat, all the strings on the guitar sound flat. Eflat Aflat Dflat Gflat Bflat Eflat. Now it's not likely that Villa-Lobos did that on purpose, what's more likely is that this person's turntable is not playing it at the right speed.
Funny. It is quite different from the published version. Well, if this IS H. V-L himself he can do what he wishes. Maybe he was still working on the composition at the time this was recorded. Would love to know the source of this...
