May 9th, 2007 will be remembered as a very sad day.
Adventurer Jimmy Hall was killed in a tragic accident north of the Arctic Circle. Jimmy was in a very remote area near Sam Fjord on Baffin Island in Canada filming a documentary on the region that included base jumping from the incredibly harsh mountains. Jimmy died during one of those base jumps. The area is so remote, it's only accessible by plane, snowmobile, and then dogsled

@grindmaggots666 If what you're saying is true, I'm so sad. But he had the coolest lifestyle in the world, doing this kind of stuff! How rich he was in experiences, apparently. The whole great white shark story is certainly impressive. I loved when he grabbed the tiger shark's dorsal fin! And the whale shark encounter. Lucky guy! I guess he wasn't that lucky, though, in the end. What fish tales he was able to tell!!! Thank God for cam corders!
@grindmaggots666 I can't believe it! Jimmy Hall survives close encounters with a Great White Shark and a Tiger Shark, but, dies on a remote area in the arctic?Go figure.
That is a seriously fat, pregnant-looking GWS. I thought they gave birth along the CA coast. Maybe they head out to Hawaii to give birth as well? Very cool footage.
i agree with rikotistic! sharks are amazing creatures. people mistake them for these crazy, wild, man-eating machines. its acually rare for a great white or any other shark to attach a human.sharks have a lateral line system. this picks up very weak electronic signals produced by the muscles of living things in the water. bul sharks are most common to attack. they live in coastal areas. they are common near flordia coasts. they swim in shallow water..
Sharks attack humans when they're hungry or threatened. This rule applies throughout the animal kingdom. It's really sad when innocence like the humble Great White Shark to become someone's snack. Plus, they clean up the ocean by eating the trash we dump like cans and boots. But it's really sad when a Whale Shark is killed, you should see the photos!
i love sharks...they would probably be more gentle if people were more gentle to them! they are just following the food chain by eating whatever they can!!!!
Jimmy Hall (rest in peace) that's was my high school teacher Ms. Tatreau's son back in Guam. She assigned sharks to me for my marine biology project. She made me use the pictures he took of the great white shark in this video for my project. Pretty awesome I would say.
I'm fascinated by sharks! I'd love to go cage diving one day. It'd be amazing! Sharks are fantastic creatures, if only we learn to respect them, and not judge or pass them off as vicious man eaters. True, Great Whites are responsible for some fatal attacks unprovoked, but most of these attacks are "test-bites". Sharks are known for liking warmer waters, which is why many people on the costlines see them often.
Sharks are so misunderstood; so many people make them look like these monstrous creatures with no conscience; just a constant need to kill. Sharks usually don't try to eat humans, they only bite when they're curious as to what you are, feel the need to defend him/herself, or become territorial and want you out of their space.
I don't like that he touched the sharks. I don't think marine life should be touched like that, it's like breaking a barrier that shouldn't be broken, in my opinion. If you're lucky enough to have an encounter with one of these animals I think you should respect its space, I don't like having random people walk up and touch me so what makes people think animals are any different?
I'm fascinated by sharks and i think that they're so cool! But, not to be a wimp or anything, when they get sharks on camera and they're like swimming toward it, it kinda scares me... lol
Beautiful. Another thing we can thank Hollywood for screwing with the public image. Most people wouldn't give a fuck if these animals died off. We must respect all living things, sharks included.
You are one crazy dude! I've done shark diving...actually was a bit disappointed in it...however, I would NEVER get out of the cage...crazy!!! Luck runs out at some point.
great white was not a "killing machine" hahaha bla bla bla . It will be , if she had bit your ass :) after lunch perhaps! this man have GREAT LUCK ...to not lose some limb
i've been on plenty of scuba dives where i've seen plenty of sharks. whenever you get close to them they just swim away scared. even on night dives i have no problem swimming with them.
its just a matter of understanding and telling yourself that their not really what their made out to be
nah, dont believe you Rock the Ocean. a newborn Great White Shark is 3-4ft long predator in it's own right. it does not hang around it's mother to be fed or protected, it just swim's off and is on it's own. where did this mythical encounter take place, how big was the 'baby' ,how close was it to it's 'mother', tell us all what happened!
I really like sharks, we had Shark week on discovery channel...unfortunately I didn't get to watch it until yesterday (which was the last day), but I think sharks are truly amazing and absolutely beautiful.
I have not been back in the water since 1975...the movie ruin;ed it for me "JAWS" i can't even go watersking in freshwater...in a stupid lake...thinking that some crazy MF'er dumped a greatwhite shark in there????
I've seen a website about the biggest sharks ever seen and this one was on it. It was 18 feet, the only one that big ever caught on film. There was also a 21 footer photographed dead (it looked as big as a truck) and that's the corroborated record for a great white.
I saw one white shark in all my dives. It came from the back and it was a meter away orso, then out of sight it turned and came straight towards me and my buddy with that grin. Max 10 m before us it took a 90 degree turn and disappeared. That was...uhm, impressive at the least.
The shark was followed by a baby so she could have done more to protect her kid but she didn't. I rather be under water then on the surface. Forget the teeth, if this 5m shark hits me, all my bones are broken.
i'm sorry, but what happened? you and a dive partner had a close encounter with a GWS and it's baby? i did'nt misread that did i ? nah, dont believe you! when born a GWS is an 3-4ft long predator in it's own right. it does'nt need to hang around mummy and get shown thing's or to be protected. it just swims off on it's own and that's it. so NO, i dont believe you. where did this mythical encounter take place, how big was the 'baby', how close was it swimming to it's 'mother' . tell us now!please.
Yeah I would rather dive so I see the shark than to be swimming on the surface or surfing cause then I won´t see the shark but I wouldn´t want to be where there are white sharks.
You need to be under water that's for sure...however Sharks are quite predictable creatures..so when you are able to read the sign-language of a shark you are pretty safe...
Given that White sharks (like all sharks), render ZERO paternal care (and sometimes eat their own young), your claim to have seen a 5m White shark "followed by" her baby...well, I will leave it at that.
this is magnificent! i have been reading about articles of shark attacks and i think it's selfish when people go ahead killing sharks! we should respect that we are in there environment and they need to eat... just like us! so if you are going to swim i think you should think over the risks? sharks are beautiful creatures even though i am PETRIFIED though fascinated... one day i want to go in a cage to overcome my fear..... r.i.p to all victims! and man, you have guts! i would never do such!
@mitchhewerislushx myself included but think great whites cruise along the bottom of the sea floor then race up and kill with a huge first hit, this technique is used on 400 lbs elephant seals! so if a human got hit with a force like that you'd die in seconds, + all recorded shark victems are mostly quickly released cause the shark doesn't no wot something tastes like until it has mouthed it, love sharks and wildlife!!..
sharks are awesome creatures, but i just can't stand 0.5 seconds in the water with one. i probably have whater shark-phobia is really called. i LOVE sharks, but im just scared of them...ALOT!
my mum said to me the other night, after i told her i wanted to go great white shark diving and wanted her 2 as well, she said 'omg no! i love them but i watched jaws when i was younger....it's scarred me for life'
Even though they are damn scary. He's right, they aren't just mindless killers (or something like what he said). I think they are beautiful and kinda cute?
that was so amazing i wish i had the guts to do that id go in the cage tho sharks are amazing love them but that doesnt mean im not scared of them lol if i was out in the middle of the ocean and there was a shark coming toward me id be freakin scared
I wish I could do that. It'd be so amazing to swim with a great white OUTSIDE the cage. Usually they chum the waters to attract sharks and this makes them tend to act more aggressively. I think they key was waiting to see how the shark behaved and he got out of the cage after seeing the shark was not going to act aggressively. Also note, Sharks do not have hands, most shark bites are them trying to determine what something is.
I think the moview Jaws scarred me as a child. I live in Hawaii, and yet you almost have to pay me to go out in the ocean. It's such a shame...but I'm almost petrified of what could be out there. :o( Makes it worst when my husband spears and stuff and there I am on the shore...sissy! lol
i can't see gambling here. the shark didn't even bump the cage. there are quite some people who are swimming with sharks, also with great whites. one of the most popular is probably andre hartman
thats gotta be one hell of an experiance, i doubt many other people can say "hey iv swam witha great white" What i do find funny though is all the vids on youube of so called "shark attacks" where the person gets away alive. If it was an actual attack youd be dead regardless of who you are. The ones where people get away are just sharks wondering wtf is that :S and obviously they have no hands so have to inspect with their mouthes. Why have i put that here :S ah well point still stands :D
Errr... Ill Put Swimming with "GREAT WHITES!" On my todo List when i just wanna die... :S

I bet his marine bio parent was so proud!
I know I would be. Ya know. If I was old and had kids. I want to instill a sense of appreciation and love for sharks in my kids.

Even though they are damn scary. He's right, they aren't just mindless killers (or something like what he said). I think they are beautiful and kinda cute?

I wish I could do that. It'd be so amazing to swim with a great white OUTSIDE the cage. Usually they chum the waters to attract sharks and this makes them tend to act more aggressively. I think they key was waiting to see how the shark behaved and he got out of the cage after seeing the shark was not going to act aggressively. Also note, Sharks do not have hands, most shark bites are them trying to determine what something is.

I went diving with sharks before, it is incredible. Most of them between 6 and 9 feet long but nothing like a great white...

I think the moview Jaws scarred me as a child. I live in Hawaii, and yet you almost have to pay me to go out in the ocean. It's such a shame...but I'm almost petrified of what could be out there. :o( Makes it worst when my husband spears and stuff and there I am on the shore...sissy! lol

Dude...move to Vegas and start gambling...that is what you did outiside the cage...You got good luck!
atenco01 2 years ago 2
i can't see gambling here. the shark didn't even bump the cage. there are quite some people who are swimming with sharks, also with great whites. one of the most popular is probably andre hartman

thats gotta be one hell of an experiance, i doubt many other people can say "hey iv swam witha great white" What i do find funny though is all the vids on youube of so called "shark attacks" where the person gets away alive. If it was an actual attack youd be dead regardless of who you are. The ones where people get away are just sharks wondering wtf is that :S and obviously they have no hands so have to inspect with their mouthes. Why have i put that here :S ah well point still stands :D
