Quite honestly the use of select fingers is completely up to the preference of the guitarist, everyone has their own style and "playing feel" if you find it more comfortable without your pinky, then don't bother using your other fingers if you can still get the same speed and accuracy.

This is like telling a drummer he doesn't need to use both drum sticks. It's true, he can probably lay down some pretty sick beats with one hand and both feet (like def leppard), but he's never going to be able to play as fast as someone with equal skill using both hands. In guitar once you get to the point of playing really fast things, the extra movement created by having to stretch your hand more and move around more will slow you down a lot. Shredding is all about efficiency of movement.

I noticed you tend to only use it if you have to. If you get in the habit of using it all the time so it's comfortable you'll open up a lot with your leads.
