If you had bothered to listen to Gates' long press conference where he defended his decision, you would know 1) it wasn't a "step down" but merely a change in strategy that would enhance the defense of our allies and 2) he took ownership over the decision to change direction, which was a reversal of his decision to put the missiles there in the first place. Look at DOD's website and read the transcript of Gates' and Cartwright's press conference on 9/17.

Where are you getting your facts? I just looked it up, 46 million Americans including 9 million children uninsured. 1 in 3 Americans uninsured at some point during 2007/2008 (86.7 million). Your healthcare insurance in its present form is unsustainable. Why is that? Have a look at any healthcare cost graph over the past 10 years and you will see reality. Companies cannot keep paying those premiums and remain globally competitive. Less coverage for more dollars. Thats the future.

Illegal Immigrants and the Uninsured only have 1 option for health care, and thats the Emergency Room, which cannot refuse them care by law. Everyone who has ever had to pay knows the ER bill comes minimum about $5000. It seems to me the US has a serious structural problem with healthcare. When a person must pay $125 to an MD to get a prescription that costs $125 for a simple flu symptom, something is wrong. $250 for a prescription medicine that the rest of the world pays $3.00 for?
