  • This is a fantastic film. Newman obviously borrowed from Brennan in his depiction, and Cooper is great as a fairly ordinary man who has wheels turning in his head, thinking of a way to survive. You can tell he's not a natural "con", just a man using his wits. Fantastic.

  • Gary Cooper and Walter Brennan were extremely close friends from the time they first met as young actors in their 20s. So the story goes that by the second day of filming "The Westerner," Cooper realized that Brennan (as Judge Roy Bean) was totally dominating every scene so Cooper radically changed how he played his character so he was the laid back reaction to Brennan's far more bombastic actions.
