  • it's totally the Smiths!

  • great show at holla'11

  • "Sounding like The Smiths" is the highest compliment you can pay one of these bands.

  • This should be a theme song to a televison show...

  • I LIKE this songs :) . . .

  • LOL! sounds like Thorn by My Bloody Valentine.

  • So 80ich, loved this!

  • If you were alive like 20 years ago or something, you would have heard much the same things being played by My Bloody Valentine.

  • @055697 what? nah, this is totally the smiths. maybe an extremely watered down version of mbv?

  • 80年代後半のインディーギターポップをまんま再現したようなサウンド&ビデオクリップ。

    たまりませんな~!

  • this video made me want to look at asian porn.....later

  • smith westerns maybe?

  • reminds me a bit of The Subways...

    enjoyable I suppose

  • this is great music reminds me of jesus of and mary chain, you guys should give Rems Floating Chandelier a listen:)

  • Reminds Me Of Me & My Big Sister <3 ^____^

  • The Pains are a band I genuinely feel lucky to know of, especially since I am the only one of my mainstream-obsessed classmates who knows of it, which makes it even more great!

  • the problem is... that audience shoegaze instead seeing the concert

  • Another shoegaze-influenced pop band that has a similar sound to the Pains is the 1990s band Rocketship. Do a YouTube search for "Rocketship - I Love You The Way I Used To Do" and you can hear the similarities for yourself.

  • The Pains of Being Way Overrated.

These kids obviously have talent, but like a lot of folks of their generation, they seem preoccupied with regurgitating the past rather than creating new paradigms. No, the J&MC, Cocteau Twins, and MBV didn't invent the wheel, but they still somehow managed to recombine the musical past to produce something that sounded refreshing for its time. The Pains may indeed have such an effect on young listeners, but old folks like myself have heard it all before.

  • @newdawg100 Sure, their sound may not be particularly groundbreaking, but I don't think there is anything wrong with creating a solid album full of well-crafted pop songs. Also, listening to this band may encourage people to look for some of their influences, as well. If it weren't for The Sundays, I would have never heard of Cocteau Twins, and if it weren't for bands such as The House of Love and Catherine Wheel, I would have never discovered The Chaneleons and Comsat Angels, either.

  • @ConfusingClarity

I don't disagree with your point at all. I only wish that we were living in a time where pop music were more interesting, and where mediocrity wasn't rewarded so easily. Also, another effect of getting older (aside from waxing too nostalgically about the past) is that there seems to be a greater urgency in how one spends their time. If I were 20, I'd have more time for the Pains. But, in my early 40s, only the essentials seem to matter now.

  • if they'd make their fucking lyrics audible I might have liked it/

  • 59 people dont like this song... thought i was going to say something smart well HA hows that for lowering the bar society

  • nice

  • why do i feel like i just listened to a smiths' song

  • @starrystephanie I feel the same way hahaha

  • @starrystephanie

    damn totally agree

  • @starrystephanie more like my bloody valentine

  • @starrystephanie Because they ripped off The Smiths.

  • The music is good, but the video is hipster as shit. Not saying that's bad for everyone; just stating the obvious.

  • MBV? Maybe, they remind me of Belle and Sebastian but I'm not bothered. I still like them. I don´t think they claim being that big so, what's the problem?

  • Haven't heard this i ages still reminds me of the stone roses.

  • Reminds me of the Ravonettes

  • erinmerle = cheap shot, mean-spirited troll. go f-ing elsewhere if you don't like the music FFS douche bag.

  • @BabylonAGoGo I leave one comment and that makes me a troll? I am as entitled to an opinion as you are. My criticism was based on observation. How is that a cheap shot? Fascists who can't handle free speech and diversity of opinion and can go elsewhere. Youtube is obviously not for you.

  • @erinmerle never said you couldn't leave a comment or tried to edit you, etc. btw I like your music, but maybe you are a bit frustrated by all the attention the Pains are getting. Treble cleff envy? lol.

  • love this band!

  • Shopping, texting, cheap novelties, taking pictures of of each other, cutesy gestures, retro nostalgia, vintage technology, and more shopping. So typical and so empty.

  • @erinmerle bitter much?

  • @tommyjstas77 That I can't express an opinion without being personally attacked? No, I'm used to encountering that on Youtube. People are so precious about their tastes. I suspect it is because when it comes to something like this video, it isn't as much about music as it is about perpetuating a lifestyle. Hipsterism for Dummies in 3 mins.

  • @erinmerle do you think the creative minds involved in this production have such an agenda as the promotion of a particular lifestlye in mind? I'd wager that the folks involved in the production of this video are simply grateful to have the opportunity to showcase their The Pains of Being Pure at Heart strike me as sweet and honest. You are right about people defending their tastes, though. What sort of style do you wear on your sleeve? What bands, brands, or philosophies do you endorse?

  • @tommyjstas77 I think that the checklist of "cool" apparent in this video is an clear indication that a prefabricated lifestyle is being used to sell music. It's easier to sell fashion. As for me I don't advertise my musical taste on my body. Morrissey did the t-shirt idol thing in a funny ironic way, making the "fan boy" part of his image (which was then revered and worn on other people's t-shirts). ThePains appropriate that aesthetic superficially and leave out the social commentary and wit.

  • @erinmerle Man, what the hell is your problem? I listened to your music and its good, so no hate there. But then reading all of these angry comments and looking at your facebook page, it seems to me you are using the same type of "hipster" image. Basically, I don't understand where you draw the distinction between yourself and these so-called hipsters.

  • @amd2q9 Me a hipster? Is it my pink bike? I bought that bike off of craigslist because it was tall enough for me. I didn't pick the cheesy colour. The bike isn't about image, it's about not having a car. And I don't hate this band, just the video. The frivolous way that girls are used to glamourize a band's image is depressing to a girl musician. Why glorify the 60s vapid tambourine girls? It's ironic that the girl in this band wears a Liz Fraser t-shirt. Liz: an electrifying musical presence.

  • @erinmerle "The frivolous way that girls are used to glamourize a band's image is depressing to a girl musician." One of the girls in the video is in the band and the video fits the song considering the song is about love. I don't see how women are being exploited here.

  • Comment removed

  • @erinmerle Your "there is a light that never goes out cover is great". You should check out a version of it done by dum dum girls.

  • @1con0clast Thanks. I'd like to redo it with decent sound. Yes, I guess by many standards I am a hipster, the closest definition I can think of being a former suburban kid who wants desperately to be something "other". No offence to the girl in this band but I can't hear her at all except for that high octave back up and that makes me worry that she is mostly decorative (see "that asian feeling"). Perhaps I should give her more credit and listen to other songs by this band before judging.

  • Step 1: Start a band with cute girls

Step 2: Make a video featuring said cute girls

    Step 3: ?????

    Step 4: Profit!

  • @Meegzter ya'll a bunch of fools, if the music sounds good to your ears, listen up. Why pick it apart the way all you haters do? The creators of the music do it as a expressions of themselves, the best ones get to make money off of it. There is a huge amount of good fortune involved in the success of a band, but shame on you for suggesting that it is calculated. Can't you see the joy in this video? Why are you looking for something to hate?

  • Comment removed

  • oow was just listenning to this charming man ^__^

  • reminds me of joy division

  • Reminds me of Morrisey :3

  • Sounds like The Jesus and Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine.

  • @FUDGEoclock jesus and mary chain, really? lmao

  • @trufiend138 The singer sounds like he's trying to imitate Jim Reid's voice. Its like Jim Reid's voice in an MBV song.

  • @FUDGEoclock oh my bad....i was thinking of the jesus lizard

  • :o!!

    Great song!!!

  • Ace song. Anything that is comparable to MBV is fine by me. Check out all-girl pyschedelic band Stealing Sheep, they operate in similar territory to Pains. youtube.com/watch?v=K2JgXLizs14

  • yeaaah ..they make me dramatize hahaha

  • reminds me of the shins

  • wow they make and do everything so 70's you actually forget we're all imitating the tastes of almost half a century ago

  • @DrExcitement101 more a merger of the 80's and 90's I think.

  • wow they make and do everything so 70's you actually forget we're all imitating the tastes of almost half a century ago

  • Great song

  • damn peggy is sooo hot. which one of the band guys is tapin that? or maybe all of them lol?

  • reminds me of new york.

  • You guys should listen to moar music out of your hipster indie circles. Maybe something more dissonant and aggressive? Eeesh.

  • GUYS

    guys

shut up I can't hear the music

  • This argument below me was fucking stupid.

    good song/video though

  • Comment removed

  • Welp I guess I'm not the target audience for this, because I don't care for the vocalist at all ( sounds like mumbling more than singing half of the time ). The instrumentals seem repetitive to me up until 1:50 or so. The subject of the song can't hold my interest, a three minute montage about being happy with someone *yawn. The video itself is presented in very faded colors, making it less interesting. "I'm with you and the stars are crashing through?" No idea what this means, enlighten me!

  • @Chinchilla0303 Kip is actually a pretty decent singer, but it's pretty obvious that this style of music isn't about the singing. It's about the fuzz and such counterpointing with the pop hooks he's singing. That's why the vocals are kept intentionally low. On their new stuff, Kip's vocals are higher in the mix, so check that stuff out. The subject is pretty cryptic, but I believe it's about a friend that is a drug addict (the rest of the album supports this).

  • Oh my!!! This music isnt just any kiind of music, its amazing and unique.

  • Good Music but the video is shit

  • @sonictrasher My Bloody valentine? I doubt they ever sounded like this. If they did, they really should go back, their great musicians but i don't love there sound man. This is great music.

  • The old My Bloody Valentine sound.

  • searched too long for this song SHES MINE SHES MINE YESSS!

  • I love the video. The super 8 shots with the fun edit just make it for me.

  • lemme see its, been two years and i've JUST heard of this band AND this song D:

good god why doesn't MTV mention about this stuff rather than other crappy pop people :/

at least i have their cool app, but im in love with this band now.... :3

  • I hate how it's not cool to bring your singer and lyrics to the foreground.

  • Greatest thing ever

When the lead kicks in its just too much haha

  • this music video makes me want to cut my bangs lmfao

  • I for one like them, despite MBV comparisons. Who knew music like this was still floating around?

  • Star Sign Teenage Fanclub?

    However fucking tune

    =)

  • where did they get a retro filter for their camera?

  • @stgodd they used real film called super 8!

  • MBV is my favorite band ever, but I still don't get all the hate to the Pains. I mean they aren't claiming their original or something, and every knows where they get there style from. You should all be thankful that they are at least trying to preserve a form of music that sadly remains in the past. A real MBV fan should appreciate what the Pains are doing and should be proud that this kind of music is still made.

  • @bioken007 Don't worry, people have a silly and stupid tendency to compare every proceeding band with the band that started the genre. MBV and The Pains of Being Pure at Heart aren't even anything alike anyway - a better comparison would be The Vaselines and this band. Both indie twee with a noise rock edge.

  • @bioken007

    amen brother

  • @bioken007 You can hardly find good musicians these days that aren't accused of copying MBV or Joy Division. Youtube commenters are just ridiculous.

  • How fucking original. This song sounds like a shittier version of an early My Bloody Valentine song.

  • this band represents what indie is about lol :)))

  • hips. . .i would finish but i'm too..........apathetic.

  • I can't believe I've barely stumbled upon them x)

  • Totally hear a smiths influence in this. Great song!

  • this band's music makes me feel like for once, everything might be alright. <3

  • friends ♥

  • love love love!

  • hipsters

  • hipsters

  • er the smiths anyone, still like it though

  • this reminds me of early 90's alternative. love it

  • it aint good indie. its just another formula. pseudo shite.

  • Ride were better

  • This band is almost a note for note rip off of Rocketship

  • @stickinginthepin dude...everything is a rip off of everything...who really cares...just make whatever music you like...as long as ur having fun who gives a shit...its pop music...its pretty impossible to not be a ripoff of something..you are pretty limited in the realm of western pop music

  • @taylor4ronpaul If everyone had that attitude music would never move forward. Plus this is almost copyright infridgement. It makes sense to be influenced by something but innovation can still exist.

  • @stickinginthepin your vision of music it's very strange. so for you we must to listen only those bands who have invented or innovated a genre? :)

hilarious, especially in pop music it's an almost impossible.

  • @TheFate23 I don't think so, countless bands have pushed things forward in their own way. The Beatles, The Velvet Underground, Pixies, Nirvana, Sonic Youth, Fugazi, Butterglory, Pavement, Beulah, Dinosaur Jr, The Byrds, Dylan, the Replacements, Rocketship, The Raincoats, The Flaming Lips, Iggy Pop, Bowie, The Beach Boys, Constantines, Wipers, the Cure, CCR, The Clash, Big Star, Can, Beefheart, Zappa, Springsteen, Nick Cave ect. I can keep going if you want but I'm running out of characters.

  • @stickinginthepin You didn't really answer their question. There's no reason why you should listen only to bands who "invented" certain styles of music. Incidentally, you might want to check a few of those, because some of them are responsible for popularising certain sounds, but not inventing them. Anyway, tPOBPAH are enjoyable - I think anyone who listens to them knows that they sound like a lot of 80s/early 90s bands; but that's why I like them, plus of course they can write good songs

  • morissey?

  • Sounds like The Ramones lite

  • Does not sound like The Smiths at all, what the fuck :L If anything they sound like My Bloody Valentine, or maybe a tiny bit of Sonic Youth.Either way they're a good band, good for long car journeys in the country side :)

  • Their tone is too 90's pop homoerotica for me. :-)

  • who fucking cares? even if they sound totally like the smiths, they sound good, so what's the matter? also, they don't.

  • if you think this sounds like the smiths then you've never listened to the smiths.

  • @kiiio1 And how would they be able to make the comparison?

Yes. This is a complete rip off of The Smiths.

  • @EggmanOzymandius god you're dumb. not going to respond beyond that.

  • @kiiio1 K.

  • this video is too cute

  • influenced by the smiths you think ??

  • I want Carlen Altman's number. I will treat her right... She's such a doll

  • Thanks for bringing back good indie

  • @9ner

Indie is a genre you autistic motherfucker.

  • @GhostLate - Thanks, Copernicus. I would have never known without you as my guide. Christ you're a fucking moron. Retreat to your video games, because that will be the pinnacle of your life's accomplishments.

  • @9ner

    Can you read?

I said that INDIE ISN'T A FUCKING GENRE.

If you think that indie is a genre you should just kill yourself.

  • @GhostLate - You said indie is a genre, now you say indie isn't a genre (lol). I didn't even make the claim of indie being a genre or not to begin with. This band falls under the subgenre of indie rock. You made yourself look incredibly stupid. So stupid, I applaud your accomplishment. I'll show this to my music professor, thanks!

  • Comment removed

  • @1con0clast - Indie rock is a subgenre. Look it up for yourself

  • Comment removed

  • @1con0clast - Indie rock is a subgenre. I will tell you again, look it up. There are several subgenres within indie rock as well. Please, stop arguing, I don't care because you're wrong. There was no reason to argue to begin with.

  • @1con0clast - You are not looking up what I'm listing to you. I am not creating this information; it has been generated by other musicians and music listeners. Music is very complex in definition due to sounds, style, direction, etc. Its the same with history and philosophy. You don't just define matter under WW2 as simply WW2, or Ethics as simply Ethics. There are different theatres, or in regards to Philosophy: Ethics: Aristotelian, Epicurean, St. Augustine, J.S.Mill, Hume, Nietzche, Sartre...
