Rimmer went out = WTF WERE THEY THINKING?! He was the best fucking character! & If they got killed...how are they still here. I agree, series 7 was SHITE. Haha that made me laugh so much... And I agree the CG was awful. The model shots, although quite old was like the standard thing for Red Dwarf. Liked this Rant...May subscribe XD
I must admit, I did find myself nodding at some of the points made, but I rember that 3 year wait between 6 and 7 felt like forever, so Id have forgiven Reddwarf even if Bobby Ewing turned up moaning about just having a weird dream!
lets have another 10 series..long live the Small Rouge One
Entirely agree. Although series 8 was so bad that I couldn't watch more than a couple of episodes of it when it aired. I have the DVD, so perhaps I'll watch it some day.
(Oh, that is very sad... Poor model.) Impressive rant though. Watching the shows out of order at 2am ammidst the static of the far distant public TV station, made the impact of Series 7 not so bad. Watching it on DVD really makes it lose some of the impact. the whole series looks too clean and crisp. Not just the bit about the starbug. And you never have to run up to the TV and grab the antenna just to hear lister's next sentence. Still I feel for you...
You say you don't know why they didn't use the model instead of the "CGI Red Pencil"?
You ask why they felt the need to dump the model. Well, without sounding unnecessarily rude you should do your research a little my man - the original model as used at the end of Season V was damaged beyond repair having fallen off of a shelf in the BBC Props Storage . they knew the model was essentially irreplaceable - it was a decade old and the only other version had been destroyed in Heroes and Angels.
lol series 7 wasnt bad, it was only remotly bad because rimmer wasnt in it for the most of the series, series 8 was pretty rubbish tho, but im glad there makin two new episodes next year to finish the program off proparly
series 7 is my least likeable one, i ony got in2 red dwarf in 2003 so i wasnt waiting for that big 'will they bring back another RD series' i dont like the CG effects on starbug, i liked them more in series 8, still the otehr series were better than series 7
I actually rather liked series VII. It was basically series II with better DVD extras although I do understand where some of what you said came from (eg. the pencil)
hi mick, whenever i find myself over analysing petty nonsense the quick solution i find is headphones and early hawkwind, works everytime, cheers Gaz.
norman lovetts return was especially good i preferred him and i think kochanski was a breath of fresh air sure no one could replace rimmer but at least they brought him back eh?
to introduce a female into the story previously all male was great because we had to see how she would fit into the crew ect

Brlliant. You hit it spot on. well done for not buying into theaccepting all the crap I felt was out of place because it was easier. and your summing up, re hitchhikers guide to the galaxy was perfect. Good show!
That was so funny. I was so annoyed at the beginning of this series as well we had waited so long, but saying that I would rather they made a good movie rather than no movie at all, even if they can't make a great one.
btw i am only 14 which probably makes me one of the younger viewers you mentioned, and i still don't like it that much. i love all you're sarcastic ranting, it's great!
although i love red dwarf and it's my favourite show ever i have to agree with you. compared to the other series no.7 was complete smeg. and I'm sure we all know why - THEY GOT RID OF RIMMER!
I never saw VII on T.V. - missed it. I saw it in the video store, and bought the whole thing. I rushed home, started watching, and was stunned. In a bad way. In a nutshell, I think all the things that were wrong about VII can be summed up easily: the lack of Rob Grant. Red Dwarf is a brilliant collaborative effort, and neither Grant or Naylor would be able to produce something approaching good by themselves. Period. Red Dwarf died when their collaboration ended.
I mean sure compared to 6 it wasn't as good, but 7 had its moments, like I thought the JFK episode was pretty good, and Norman Lovett's return was good, even if it was rushed. I'm suprised you didnt mention kochanski, I always felt she was crap and just couldn't replace that loveable git Rimmer. But anyway like you say 7 wasn't that bad, and at least you honest which most people are afraid to do. Great man!
mick! superb often brutal honesty! cant believe you didnt win on that alone. still at least Bobby said ur name, theres something. well done mate, be proud, be very proud :) x
So, so true. I have a friend who claims 7 is better than 6, a series which he feels recycled loads of previous ideas. It does, but it does it well. 7 is just poo. Thankfully 8 was much better. But give me 4 and 5 anyday!
well this is my favourite so far. it's the only one that has made me laugh and it's spot on.. though i can't believe you didn't mention Rimmer, the quintessential British comedy character and funniest Dwarfer, being replaced by an attractive bird... or was that series 8? can't remember.. that was the greatest travesty in my opinion.... without Rimmer there's no Red Dwarf it's that simple. Fuck pandering to movie execs.. Great vid BTW!
I wish the judging for this competition was democratic because I would totally vote for you. It may not be so great that a dissenting opinion wins but this is the truth about a controversial aspect of Red Dwarf history. Everybody needs to hear it. So bravo!
You know what I love about you ? . Nothing. But I agree with you 100% about everything except, series 8 was equally as shit, but it was shit-with Chris Barry in it to make it slightly less shit. The CGI and the new scale and production values ruined what was already a piss poor script. Also, failed to mention the injection of a poorly acted (brand new !) kochanski. Other than that, you pretty much said everything Id like to say except looking slightly uglier in the process.
Thank you so much!! This needed to be posted regardless of the competition. Series VII did suck. It wasn't even fucking funny. I never suffered the cliff hanger thing; being in the U.S. I've just bought them all now. But, while I can watch every episode of every other series over and over I don't even pick up the VII DVD. You rock for posting this!!!
How could you say series VII was worse than series VIII! Series VIII had viagara jokes! And kicking death in the nuts just made the whole thing ridiculous... And
worth 7 minuates of my time. cant agree with you entirely, but then i never did understand why starbug had suddenly become so frigging masivly huge, yet the cockpit etc was all normal size,, like wot.
Oh and having re-watched series 7 the other week, i agree its mostly just too different. Though the first 2 episodes are classic Dwarf. I just think the over emotional Kochanski episodes were just a bit too much.
Although the rant about the CGI was probably a bit unfair. The docs on the DVD explain the reasons why CGI was used. The model guys had already stopped filming halfway through the series with a severly reduced budget. So when script changes were made, there were a lot of unmade shots which needed to be done. Chris Veales CG Starbug and space shots were i think very good for 1997. I mean look at Babylon 5 and Star Treks CGI in those times, it was bloody painful.
There's a long explanation for the use of CG in series 7 involving a massive escalation in the cost of model shots...
Not sure why they didn't just use the excellent stock shots as in previous with CG augementation where you needed a wibbly thing or a swirly thing...
But nothing excuses the writing. Utterly dire. Characters became 2-dimensional charicatures of themselves and the gags were very weak. Sad what can happen when a writing partnership ends.
The pencil didn't turn up until the remastered series, and then in series 8!

May I ask which Hitch Hikers guide to the galaxy you are on about? The original movie or the remake?
I think the remake was utter bollocks. Couldn't stand it, they changed things, cut things, and what the hell was that opening song!?!
Mini rant over.

if anything series 7 didn't live up to the hype it did further storyline and if you are a fan this is what you want plus development of character
i mean if you had the choice would you want to know what happened after the last series?
i know how it feels to wait years for continuation and be let down by the hype thats why i never buy into it anymore and havnt for a few years now
i mean take the x mean films(only thing i could think of)i loved the first but 2 was kinda a let down by comparison

isnt cannon just another word for the story or characters and universe surrounding a series?
so infact you are missing out on a huge chunk of storyline.
It wasnt that bad okay the other series where superb and made this one look average but it was still good by other programs
thing with the CG was CG wasnt common was still lacking in technicality just look at computer games in that day to see what i mean
they prolly used CG because it was a new toy for them to use i mean someone had to try it
