Statins have pleiotropic effects. Lowering LDL does nothing on its own. Changing the quality of LDL from pattern B to pattern A will have an effect. That's why Zetia does nothing.
You should never become a strict vegetarian. We are designed to eat meat. However, our daily requirement of carbohydrates is Zero. Get on a diet that eliminates all excess carbohydrates and your arteries clear out on their on.
All I know is that Zetia made me so sick I have been in the hospital. The side effects are horrible. They also hade be taking Lopid which many sites warn should not be done. I have stopped taking it and am beginning to feel better.
I found this to be a very one sided report. According to reports that I have read the Enhance study showed that the combination of Zetiea and Zocor reduced LDL levels by nearly 60% where Zocor alone reduced LDL levels by only 40% Most doctors agree that LDL is the best indicator of potential cardiovascular events. Why didn't this report include this finding???? But the report focused on Carodid artery build up instead. Which was not statistically sigificnate. Keep it negative Katie???
To slacckk's comment... i believe the study you should read is CTT study, or any one of the 100's studies done that show that lowering LDL chol will increase mortality by decrease fatal and non fatal MI, CVE, CHE and others. im not sure what you are talking about. OH and most important lets look at the facts that the patient group are heterozygous familial hypercholesterolimic... ie: 1 in a million patient condition type... hmmm.. love non biast media... where did the dr get his degree from?
The Antihypertensive and Lipid-Lowering Treatment to Prevent Heart Attack Trial (ALLHAT-LLT): CONCLUSIONS: Pravastatin did not reduce either all-cause mortality or CHD significantly when compared with usual care in older participants with well-controlled hypertension and moderately elevated LDL-C.
ASCOT trial: fatal and nonfatal stroke was reduced by 27 %.9 The truth is that these events were seen in about 1.7 % of the statin-treated and in about 2.4 % in the non-treated patients, an absolute difference of 0.7 percentage points. But as this small difference of 0.7 is equivalent with 27 % of 2.4 percentage points, the misleading number 27 % was used, as is usual in the trial reports wanting to potentiate the apparent benefit of treatme
The Treating to New Targets (TNT) Study: published in 2004, found that high doses of statins improved cardiovascular disease outcomes slightly but resulted in higher numbers of deaths from other causes.
Apart from the biggest study of all. The Heart Protection study... the most important study... oh wait and then there is CTT... hmmm when looking of patient groups in the 10's of thousands its amazing what results we get.
CTT was a meta-analysis. A study of studies where they can pick and choose what studies they include.
Statins do lower LDL. What statins DO NOT do is lower all-cause mortality. They don't make people healthier, nor live longer. The vast majority of your "10's of thousands" receive no benefit at all. A couple are saved a heart attack, a couple die cancer. NO NET BENEFIT to 99% of people.
There are no "amazing results"...there are miniscule results for very few people.
Are you focusing on High risk patients or just any ordinary patient. Because a HIGH RISK patient needs treatment, whilst a low risk does not. its simple. so are you talking about HIGH risk?
Dr. Marcia Angell, M.D., former editor-in-chief of the New England Journal of Medicine: "over the past two decades, the pharmaceutical industry has gained unprecedented control over the evaluation of its own products." She said that "drug companies now finance most clinical research on prescription drugs, and there is mounting evidence that they often skew the research they sponsor to make their drugs look better and safer."

genecosta2 .. Don't you get it? THIS was about the findings of the artery build up.
You need to educate yourself on all the TRUE facts and quit believing big pharma, the ones who profit from the sale of these drugs.

This medication lowered LDL like crazy.
There was NO EFFECT, in fact it INCREASED plaque. LDL lowering DOES NOTHING!
NO STUDIES HAVE EVER SHOWN A DECREASE IN OVERALL MORTALITY BY TAKING A STATIN. NONE!

PROSPER trial:, total mortality was unchanged, because 22 fewer deaths from heart disease and stroke was outweighed by 24 more cancer deaths.

The cholesterol lowering is a surrogate end-point. The real end-point, overall mortality, showed no difference in EVERY MAJOR STATIN STUDY.
