You guys are idiots. At 0:12, Pete wasn't dissing Keith. He was emphasizing that Keith didn't just follow one certain style or execute one certain filler all the time, like with most other drummers. @beatlegirl456 and its really cool that he is so impressed by keith for a couple reasons. 1. because there are some stories of them not getting along and its good to know that deep down they were great friends. and also as a drummer its always a compliment when someone gets excited about your drumming. im sure its the same for all instruments though that good feeling when someone compliments you. rogers a great guy. the who were an awesome band
@theyhavepeabrains ''the guy'' being Roger Daltrey, lead singer of The Who, who only happen top be one of the most famous bands of all time!!!! Your name says it all.
@bigderekkeene Really you comment on what obviously was a joke. I wasn't making fun of him. I work along side sound guys and its commical when there are so many buttons on the board that its hard to know what to do. So save your breathe for Justin Beiber haters.
that makes so much sense. roger pointed out a major thing. he followed the vocals and the unstrumental was just rhythm, damn drunk n crazy but great genius
@petgall2 As a drummer, I'm honestly not sure. Usually when people say something like that, they mean straightforward, simple, etc., but Keith was still doing a lot of fills at that part too haha.
@petgall2 ok as a drummer, guitarist, bassist, and singer i can, without a doubt, tell you what this means. it mean that what you hear keith play when roger is singing, keith plays the same thing in the break.
@petgall2 It means Keith didn't add a lot of flair or variety in that part. When you hear Roger singing, you can hear various fills and changes in Keith's drumming, but during the break, it's rather straight and normal.
that was pretty intense-Ive always been a big fan of Roger Daltrey's-a true alpha male-you didnt have to worry about being embarrassed in front of your Dad when watching Roger Daltrey perform, not like when I saw Houses of the Holy and Robert Plant looked pretty flamboyant
Ever since I read his biography, I carry about two dozen or so M-80s with me whenever I stay in a hotel. I'm no longer allowed in the Holiday Inn in Columbus, OH or the Courtyard Marriot in Cocoa Beach, FL.
Comparing Keith to Bonham is like comparing The Who to Led Zeppelin. Two different animals here. They are both so utterly brilliant that they have reached a level to where it is pointless trying to compare anyone to them.
This is a great video, really great. It is cool to see Roger getting all excited when he is sitting at the board, over the creativity and crazyness of Keith's drumming. I only wish I could have seen the Who when Keith was alive, but at least I got to see John when he was still alive. If you don't LOVE the Who, I can't be around you.
@billheartyface The drum fill comment? You know Keith would have just laughed at Townshend making fun of him. I doubt Pete means any harm since he and Moon were good friends.
Roger picked an excelent track. And how he explains Moon's style is exactly why I prefer Moon to Bonzo, with his creativity and his fills, he never did the same thing again on each song. He was like a painter. When most of the drummers are like TUN TAH TUN TAH! Moon was like TUN TAH DUTUTUN TAH-TAH-TAH TSS TAH-TAH TUNTUN TSS-TSS. LOL Bonzo was great but I prefer Moon's style.
ok did you know that when his wife kim kerrigan i think ? lived with him he abused her threw her around the house and pointed a shotgun at her he also made her give up her modeling career just goes to show how bad he needed to get his life straight....he also was banned from the hilton hotel and the holiday inn for making noise ... destroying property and blowing up toilets moon the loon lol

In reply to hdc9468 the real tragedy of Keith's death was that it was caused by an accidental overdose of drugs prescribed to wean him off of alcohol. He undoubtfully was a genius, but he also suffered from bipolar disorder.
Despite how great he was, there's still something obscure and pretty allarming about his personality, and you can tell by his facial expressions that he isn't always in control of himself.
Well said. Page when he Moon and Enwistle were going to form what later was Led Zepplin said it best . Moon created a unique drumming style of total sonic assault with the best showmanship in rock. Bonham and Moonie were friends. A 1979 Who 3 hour set Kampuchea. Bonham left with his manager and said 'We just the greatest band on the planet.' (PT played with Bonham earlier that month - said Bonham is 'fucking incredible.') They all loved Moonie.
i think he said it best, roger that is, that they would be nothing without him. looking past their personal lives and into what was "The Who", I agree that Roger looked smitten over Keith. That's respect... it is just too bad Keith isn't around to see it, I suppose.
What most people dont realize is that most of the time he was quite drunk when he played and hopped up on pills. Its like being drunk while driving and being a better driver. The man was truly brillant.
you couldnt have said it any better..........i myself have tried to somewhat imitate keith's style but yet its to say the least very very very complicated.
the thing is though all i can do is just laugh when i mees up cause i realize this drumming just cant be done again
Keith Moon was a drumming genius - and the real reason was the way he blended drum corp drumming with Hal Blaine/Sandy Nelson surf style. 30 years later no one's figured it out, but that's really what it was - the development of the Krupa side of the Krupa/Buddy Rich divide.
That guy had it right. In the end....I don't really care about his "loony" whatever. (Although I can hear it in his playing.) But I just fucking love his drumming. Period.
indeed. I'm not fond of Keith Moon outside a drumset. But when the man was behind the set - the whole thing - image, planning, whatever - freaking great.
He reinvent the way to play drum which in that years was a jazzy way ... he was the best drummer of that time bonan mitchell and the others have a good tecnique and control expecially bonan but I think (but i'm not god) that Keith had something more than the others .... he was also a great live performer and also a funny drummerclown, just to see the performance that he do at the rolling stone circus "A quick one" it was 1968 and i think no one play drum in that way in 1968... KEITH RULES
Keith's style reminds me a bit of Mitch Mitchell, more frenetic but similar. Both great. I think Ringo is underrated, he did exactly what a drummer should do, I especially like his drumming on "Oh Darling".
Listen to Ringo's astounding Fill-Sculpture on the song
"She Said - She Said" - many drummers have said "I defy you to play those parts and retain that feel." - That generation of drummers had a core of solid time and feel under their 60s wildness. Moon, Mitch, Bonham, and Ringo... forever
Love this...I've always maintained that the Who were a drum solo with colorations in trebel (Pete) and bass (John). See Young Man's Blues for a full lesson...
I used to be a Moon fan for his flamboyance and flair, then I read his autobiography and listened more and I began to realize how creative and talented he really was. He really was the Hendrix of the drum set and his personality and wild antics only overshadowed what a great drummer and unique performer he was. Miss him.
I was fortunate to have seen The Who performing in 76 with Keith Moon!! He had a spectaclar style of playing, a totally unique drummer in every respect! Add the other members, and what you had was a truelly explosive mix!! When Keith sadly died, so to did The Who! It could never be the same...As was the passing of another rock Genius John Entwistle..R.I.P..Keith & John..Long live The Who..
There are 5 drummers of which I hold to the highest of regards... John Bonham, Keith Moon, Ian Paice, Bill Ward, and Neil Peart. They all had their own incredible styles and playing abilities, but sadly... Bonham and Moon are not with us anymore and consequently can not share with us their life, vibrance, and abilities. They are and always will be legends.
Keith Moon was one of the first rockstars as an individual... smashing hotel rooms driving cars in the swimming pools and smashing his drum kits at gigs....
Of course Keith entered Who after Roger and the others. It was Rogers band in the beginning. Togethér with Entwistle, Moon formed the largest rhytm section ever. No one can explain how great Keith and John was together. Along with Roger they became the spokesmen for Petes genius. Like all other great bands it's the magic of them together that makes it. When Keith died it as all over, just a´it would have been without one of the other. Keith is the biggest drummer ever, no doubt.
nope nope, a true drummer follows the vocalist and goes with the bassist. the asshole guitarist give the thoughts of what would sound better as a fill on the drums. drumming is like dancing, but with the arms and hands. you listen to the beat and then take the beat and make it AMAZING!
i think its amazing that, even though he was crazy and probably a hassle in the band, roger and pete show so much respect for how good he was and how important he was to modern drumming and rock music in general
Like Robert Plant said during an encore of a Led Zeppelin concert in June 1977, when Moon took the stage, grabbed the microphone, and began yelling barely-intelligible gibberish and profanities. Plant taking the microphone back from him and yelled.......... "Keith Moon!"
That's not what happened at all. If you know how both bands were live, Moonie was used to taking center stage and making fun of Townshed and being a comedic showman. Robert didn't want Moonie to disrupt the flow with his Who schtick. There was great love and respect among Bonham, Page and Plant with Moon. Page said Moon was the only drummer Bonham would allow play on stage ('73 and '77). There's a picture of Moonie on stage and Page riffing and have such a wonderful smile watching him.
i love how he's all shaky and can't find the right button. and it's pretty funny how he gets excited more and more and more till finally he just cracks up like "he plays the break perfect...BAHAHAHH"
Pete loves Keith! What are you guys talking about!

i think he said it best, roger that is, that they would be nothing without him. looking past their personal lives and into what was "The Who", I agree that Roger looked smitten over Keith. That's respect... it is just too bad Keith isn't around to see it, I suppose.

Keith Moon was a fantastic character, king of drummers and the sort of person who actually did qualify as a 'celebrity'........
Hoovercat 2 years ago
What most people dont realize is that most of the time he was quite drunk when he played and hopped up on pills. Its like being drunk while driving and being a better driver. The man was truly brillant.

I love watching rogers face at the mixing desk on the "and if i swallow anything evil" part.
That is exactly what Keith Moon's drumming is about.. you just have to smile ,giggle and laugh at loud at keiths genius.
Not a lot of music makes you LOL.
astrochicken 2 years ago 3
you couldnt have said it any better..........i myself have tried to somewhat imitate keith's style but yet its to say the least very very very complicated.
the thing is though all i can do is just laugh when i mees up cause i realize this drumming just cant be done again
mattc752 2 years ago
one thing's for sure. doesn't seem to be near enough footage of him playing out there.
mcul2112 2 years ago
Keith Moon was a drumming genius - and the real reason was the way he blended drum corp drumming with Hal Blaine/Sandy Nelson surf style. 30 years later no one's figured it out, but that's really what it was - the development of the Krupa side of the Krupa/Buddy Rich divide.
MrMarz13 2 years ago 2
That guy had it right. In the end....I don't really care about his "loony" whatever. (Although I can hear it in his playing.) But I just fucking love his drumming. Period.
mcul2112 2 years ago
exactly right.....his drumming alone made him a legend anyway, the "moon the loon" persona just put the icing on the cake
mattc752 2 years ago
indeed. I'm not fond of Keith Moon outside a drumset. But when the man was behind the set - the whole thing - image, planning, whatever - freaking great.
jonanjello 2 years ago
He reinvent the way to play drum which in that years was a jazzy way ... he was the best drummer of that time bonan mitchell and the others have a good tecnique and control expecially bonan but I think (but i'm not god) that Keith had something more than the others .... he was also a great live performer and also a funny drummerclown, just to see the performance that he do at the rolling stone circus "A quick one" it was 1968 and i think no one play drum in that way in 1968... KEITH RULES

Keith's style reminds me a bit of Mitch Mitchell, more frenetic but similar. Both great. I think Ringo is underrated, he did exactly what a drummer should do, I especially like his drumming on "Oh Darling".
xtratorque 2 years ago 4

They are and always will be legends.

what about mitchell, baker and portnoy? i agree though, moonie and bonzo died to young, incredible muscians

Near the end, at Behind Blue Eyes, l get a feeling that it would be better with only drumms and vocals, its just so powerful, really.
NorthrendProductions 2 years ago
Of course Keith entered Who after Roger and the others. It was Rogers band in the beginning. Togethér with Entwistle, Moon formed the largest rhytm section ever. No one can explain how great Keith and John was together. Along with Roger they became the spokesmen for Petes genius. Like all other great bands it's the magic of them together that makes it. When Keith died it as all over, just a´it would have been without one of the other. Keith is the biggest drummer ever, no doubt.

With Keith gone, The Who was a shadow of its former self.
DeafFret 2 years ago 4
nope nope, a true drummer follows the vocalist and goes with the bassist. the asshole guitarist give the thoughts of what would sound better as a fill on the drums. drumming is like dancing, but with the arms and hands. you listen to the beat and then take the beat and make it AMAZING!
sottekm 2 years ago
lol when roger first joined the who he described moons drumming as a jet engine starting up!!!!

Keith joined after Roger.

i think its amazing that, even though he was crazy and probably a hassle in the band, roger and pete show so much respect for how good he was and how important he was to modern drumming and rock music in general

Like Robert Plant said during an encore of a Led Zeppelin concert in June 1977, when Moon took the stage, grabbed the microphone, and began yelling barely-intelligible gibberish and profanities. Plant taking the microphone back from him and yelled.......... "Keith Moon!"
warftrat87 2 years ago 3
That's not what happened at all. If you know how both bands were live, Moonie was used to taking center stage and making fun of Townshed and being a comedic showman. Robert didn't want Moonie to disrupt the flow with his Who schtick. There was great love and respect among Bonham, Page and Plant with Moon. Page said Moon was the only drummer Bonham would allow play on stage ('73 and '77). There's a picture of Moonie on stage and Page riffing and have such a wonderful smile watching him.
