its so easy to criticize someone doing kata without having to prove your own performance. why don't you harsh critics record yourselves and attach it to the comments so you could be more helpful to correct other fellow Shotokan practitioners? It shows what kind of "teacher" or Shotokan "sempai" you are... self glorifying and insecure.
Bassai, you're absolutely right. While this is not exactly perfect performance (this lady's Hangetsu Dachi could use some improvement), it isn't that bad either. And NOBODY is ever perfect in kata. That is one of the great things with them-as good as you can possibly get, there is always room for improvement. All things concidered, these guys are not too bad. would be interesting though to see them performing it at real tempo.
Awful, really awful performance of Hangetsu no two students had the same stance and the count was really bad. I do not , as a Shotokan Instructor, blame the students. They are a reflection of the Sensei.
@semseiattale First off if your so great then post a video of your self doing it. Iv'e done Shotokan for 11 years since i was a kid. Hangsetsu is a shitty Kata anyway and its hard to make look good. For a guy to put "Sensei" on a damn youtube video shows something about yourself. I run a school too and I would never correct on videos. Not everyone can be as great as you, otherwise post a better Kata performance, if you pull it off, I would bow my head in respect. Until then watch it and enjoy.
if taking a belt you should be so prepared that there is no need for counting. who counts in english in karate anyway? all styles i watched its pure japanese 1 to 10 counting, and some also 11 and up. dachi is not of black belt standard neither is breathing and focus of kime. even when doing a turn using kiai nobody has any real kime. this seems more like green belt or lower and should not do this kata. However, keep training and you might get a push in the right direction.. "might"...
@rille69 i agree there is A LOT to work on and this has nothing to do with kuro obi standards i know of. I don't even think they are technically advanced enough to learn Hangetsu. But as semseiattale wrote, they're only doing what they're taught to do.
Arm Chair Critics. I fail to see some of the critiques from given to this footage. Just a bunch of general statements. More people worried about "Accents" (what if he is asian?)and comparing this class to way things are done in their school. On top of that a camera angle that doesn't provide a head on angle to determine if punches are in line or not. Being performed at that cadence will look like it lacks "spirit".
I keep watching this video and the more I watch the more I find out how to do Hangetsu wrong. I feel terrible for the students because of the instructor. Please correct them. I am glad I have a great teacher, who is a seventh dan, has awesome technique and teaches us very well, especially the basics.
These guys need to improve a lot. Breathing seems to be artificial, using it more like a sound effect. Punches are way off as Gojuryu77 pointed out. And no spirit at all! Are they all really black belts? With all due respect, why is the instructor trying to fake an accent, some kind of military accent?
Just watched. Really slow all over compared to some other styles ( what style are you?). interesting to watch and i know it was just a test but the whole thing seemed to lack any "spirit". But as i said interesting to watch nonetheless.

This is a very difficult kata to do correctly. Many students begin in hangetsu dachi and forget about it about it half way through.

Very good cameraman. He knows the most important rule in filming: keep the camera on the attractive lady.
That instructor's fake-Japanese accent was rather bizarre.

They use hangetsu dachi. Its not the same version of hangetsu your use to practicing.
