I listened to them at their concert in Rostock last week. They sung to lyrics by Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Brahms and Reger. It was an amazing evening. Yes one of the best boys choirs of the world...
I think even Harnocourt has done it with boy trebles. I have the Matteuspassion and Weichnachtnesse with Wiener sägnerknaben and boy soloists frpm the choir, But just in th esoprano part. The alto is Paul esswood
Danke, Herr Schmidt-Gaden!
Ja!
"It is always done that way ..." Perhaps I should leave it at that, because there are many aspects of life about which the same thing is said, but that are discovered to be wrong. I believe in the integrity of the boy's voice in obbligato with an oboe da caccia, and therefore, it matters not to me what other pairing may be utilized; that said, it does seem to me that a woman's voice paired in obbligato with a modern oboe seems to be a good fit as well.
In my opinion it is not about right or wrong. Music is an art and there are different interpretations and ways classical music is performed. Boys voices have a different quality and a beauty of their own and I enjoy that, but I don't think it would be right if it is the only performed that way. I love diversity and those who claim they do it "historical" are often as narrow minded as their opponents. I love both.
But ... why a modern oboe and female soprano instead of the oboe da caccia and boy soprano for which Bach wrote? Surely the Windsbacher, a wonderful choir, could produce a boy soloist?
It is always done that way...Only Schmidt -Gaden let boys sing the soprano/alto parts...As far as I know all other famous boys choirs including the Thomanerchor Leipzig invite Guest artists to sing the solo parts- Only the echo sopran part features a boy...Sometimes the alto part is sung by a countertenor...
There's a huge discussion about "historical performance practice", but I like both ways---Schmidt-Gaden says he is doing it in the originial way, just like Bach...Others say todays perfection can just be reached with women covering the soprano/alto parts. They do have a point...I really love boys singing the parts, but some of the Toelzer recordings have major weaknesses, others are outstanding.
Quite true! Perfection is not the goal, in my way of thinking, but authenticity, and therefore I must side with Schmidt-Gaden as the proponent of the performance practice most like the original. It is well documented that Bach himself complained about his boys, but it seems that the true motivation for his doing so was to obtain ever more payment from the Leipzig Town Council.
I guess the main problem is that boys have a very short singing career...Even shorter today, because they hit puberty very earlier. Some have their voice changes with 12...And most boys only reach perfection, when they are very close to their voice break. With a few exceptions of course. But it is very difficult to exactly pass this time and record their voices then...Most directors are dependent from what they are offered Bach Fest (celebration) and other events.
To correct myself not only Schmidt-Gaden is doing it that way...There is also the "Knabenchor Hannover" I own a Bach CD "H-Moll Messe" from them with Boys covering the soprano and alto parts...There might be other exceptions, but on the whole it is performed "that way"
Really tenoruser? If I google Marcel Ponseele, I see photos of a man that is clearly not the same person in this video...

Perhaps the most beautiful aria from Bach's Weihnachts Oratorium. The echo effect in the oboe and the Sopranos is divine.
