OpenSUSE got a boost on it's latest edition 11.2, seems that the guys did a very nice work, and because Novell is by side. :) If you have the right hardware, the system covers the desktop user's needs for free. Open Office is ok. I tried it at an Asus mobo with an Athlon 64X2 3 GHz and an Nvidia GT220 1 Gb. I installed the nVidia drivers through the repository, and then I really get impressed of the speed, and the graphics. Flash worked ok even with HD You Tube videos, openGL screensavers make
Windows is horrible...I don't get it, their OS's continually get worse and ppl continue to buy from Microsoft. Haven't installed Open Suse yet but Ubuntu 9.10 kicks the shit out of everything Microsoft has ever put out.
"Ubuntu 9.10 kicks the shit out of everything Microsoft has ever put out"
That hasn't been my experience. Ubuntu 9.10 on my new dual-boot computer has shown some bugs: clock running slow, processes that won't terminate properly, having to sometimes reset settings, browser sometimes freezing for a second (on an Core i7, 6-GB computer).
I haven't had a single problem with Windows 7.
I will be testing openSUSE soon. I hope I have a better experience with it than Ubuntu.
@DarkCylon Ubuntu 9.10 does have many bugs. Between Win 7 and that I would choose Win but try OpenSUSE 11.2. It is really good.
I spent 8 days installing wireless adapter on ubuntu 9.10 just did not want to work. Thats when i switched to openSUSE. Just try to google "wireless does not work on ubuntu 9.10" so many people have problems with it.
I had problems with Ubuntu only with the old graphic card drivers for Radeon(After Ubuntu 8.04 they were not working)...But with Windows 7 I had a Lot of problems.Blue Screen of Death,Removed HDD(had to shutdown PC to unplug and plug again the power supply for the HDD),File deleting(when he counts the number of files) Freez, Explorer bug(have to close Explorer processes and launch it again about 1-15 times/day because of the bug),Instant Explorer bug after arhiving with powerful arhivators.
@Dylantog Running good games and apps has nothing to do with the operating system itself, it is just based on compatibility. Anyone could make every good game for Windows for linux instead, it is just not a good marketing decision due to the population size that runs linux. Frankly, Windows is one of the worst operating systems I have ever used. It's bloated as hell, slow, and unintuitive. Don't get me started on its file organization, because it has no understandable hierarchy.
i dont get any of this! i wanna get linux on my dell with windows 7 but i know nothing about it can i just download the stuff to dvd and then install it from there or do i need to actually get linux first its very confusing
You can download OpenSUSE for free online or another OS called Ubuntu 9.10. They are both for free and there are 32bit and 64bit Versions. If you want I can send you the link where you can get both Operation Systems and both bit-Versions. These are Linux Operation System so you don´t need to preinstall some kind of Linus. OpenSUSE and Ubuntu are complete Operations Systems. Ask me if you need the links. I´ll send them to you.
I tried it, on my AMD Processor computer it didn't worked. Ok, they said it will work on Intel then, I tried on my brother's Intel Processor Laptop and it destroy 250 GB of precious data and didn't even installed... So I really don't recommend.
that is like saying you need windows to install windows. Linux is an operating system. Go on to the distro site, in this case Open Suse, then download the ISO, if your not sure which bit version to download, choose 32bit. From there burn the ISO onto a disk. You cannot just drag and drop the iso. if your using windows 7, just double click the iso and burn it to a blank disk.
good luck, and your making a great choice choosing linux.
I just got Opensuse 11.2 with KDE yesterday and is awesome, but kopete is so lame, I'm gonna try amsn or emesene. And the auido doesnt work just in flash videos lol like youtube, i can't listen
I don't like the package manager of suse, apt is far superior

@NoRestart Hackintosh means that someone patched the Macintosh installer and files to make it run on a regular non-Apple branded PC.
