  • From england: what is shortning? We love to make cupcakes and we would love to know whst shortning is to help us with our butercream frosting thankyouu :)

  • Or you could just use whipped cream or cream cheese frosting. Much more simple! ;)

  • @MaRaTheMeyvn whipped cream needs to be refrigerated and will go flat after a day and does not work well for holding shapes like buttercream, same thing goes for cream cheese frosting

  • @yoyomax12 In my country cakes are always frosted with whipped cream and it's not ever gone flat but yes, it doesn't hold its shape as well as butter cream. Sifting in some vanilla sauce powder does the trick. Plus it need less sugar and normal sugar works fine. :P

  • Hi, how much is a cup? In the UK we use ounces.

  • @MrElementalX google it

  • Hi hum I dont where i can find vegetable shortening (where i live) what could i use instead please ?

  • @papiy0n Butter is fine

  • @yoyomax12 Thank you and is it the buttercream that your using in your rainbow cupcake tutorial ?

  • @papiy0n yes

  • I had not tried making this icing until just a couple of months ago. The first recipe I tried said to use only butter with no mentioning of shortening. My icing turned out really gritty; it was like it wasn't mixing properly. Is shortening the easy fix to this problem I keep having?

  • @DametjeKelly Are you using the powdered sugar? Shortening does make for a slightly smoother icing

  • Can I subsitute icing sugar w/ something else?

  • @TheHopeLopez1 not really, you need the powdered sugar in this. I do have a recipe up called not-so-sweet frosting (fairly recently see channel page for video) that uses granulated sugar.

  • if we make coloured buttercream icing can we use the normal vanilla extract?

  • i like your camera tripod

  • I've never used shortening but I get really annoyed with that pale yellow in my buttercream when I want it white. Will I be able to taste the difference compared to when I use all butter (like I always do)?

  • so i tried this and ...it tasted like the icing powder, did i do something wrong? i didnt use the shortening bc i didnt have it but i see in the comments u said thats alright, so um... yea...enlighten me? :D

  • @Poet0fDarkness666 You will taste the icing sugar in this because that's the main component. You can use all butter in this. If you beat it enough, the texture will be fluffier.

  • can you make butter cream roses with this icing recipe?

  • @robynthecrow I don't see why not :)

  • do u have to use shortenig

  • @cake456togo you can use just butter if you want

  • how much frosting does this recipe end up making .does anyone know

  • @sissyjesseka It makes enough to ice a two layer cake (8" round), cover a 9x13'" sheet cake or about 24 cupcakes. It all depends on how thick you make it.

  • i made chocolate buttercream but i put it in the fridge and now its solid :(

  • Comment removed

  • how will the buttercream frosting change if i use butter only?

  • @asdfoiyn It may be a slightly yellower shade of white depending on how yellow your butter is

  • @yoyomax12 so the consistency will be the same right?

  • @asdfoiyn yes

  • @yoyomax12 do you have to use butter

  • @katie3321 you can use all shortening

  • @yoyomax12 thank you it was my sisters birthday and i needed to now

  • how much almond extract do you add??????

  • @TheCupcakegirl17 Recipe is in the description box, please read it.

  • thank you :) i will defanatly be trying this recipe thanks so much.... your channel is great :)

  • I love all your videos :) but what exactly is vegtable shortening? because when i go to my local supermarket i can never find it? i can only find vegtable fat ?

  • @CupcakeLoversChannel shortening is vegetable fat in solid form

  • @yoyomax12 oh that's great! ill be trying this recipe very soon and ya i was just wondering if it tastes more like sugar than frosting haha

  • what kind of butter do you use? salted or unsalted? how many cupcakes can you decorate with this amount of frosting?

  • @EmilyPique3 I use salted butter, but that is up to you. This makes enough frosting to ice a double layer regular sized cake mix. Maybe 24 cupcakes?

  • @yoyomax12 thanks! i love your videos!! ♥

  • Can you use all butter instead of shortening?and how does the frosting taste like?

  • @splashycassie Yes you can use all butter. The frosting taste like frosting, hard to describe really

  • @yoyomax12 thats good ill give it a try then, was just worried the it would tast bad

  • Cool recipie but mine turned out abit creamy :)

  • Can I ask what does the buttercream taste like with the shortening?

  • @IamafuturesailorXD sweet and creamy, not quite as tasty as butter

  • do we have to use shortening??

  • @EpaTurtle for this recipe, yes you do but there are butter only frostings out there

  • @yoyomax12: do you have any suggestion for a replacement for the vegetable shortening? can i use vegetable oil?

  • @ESSIL22 you can use butter

  • can you add food coloring to change it's color?

  • @posokichi541 I'm not yoyomax12 but yes. use gel coloring though if you can. Normal food coloring will thin it out. You can just add more icing sugar to make it thick again though. :)

  • @ashy13241 thank you~!

  • @posokichi541 your welcome. :)

  • @posokichi541 Hi! :D I know I am not yoyomax12 and all but yes... You can definitely add food coloring to the frosting... don't believe me? check the Video description! :D

  • @DiegoJulianZapata i know someone already told me

  • @posokichi541 yes

  • @yoyomax12 yay~!

  • Where can you get the ingredients to make the frosting?

  • you're an angel yoyomax 12! xD

  • Hi there yoyomax12.. I need help in identifying the type of icing I ate last few weeks ago at my friend's house... It tasted very nice. It's not too "buttercream-soft" and not too "fondant-hard". I can see powdered sugar in there but I'm not sure what else did she added to make such consistency. It tasted nice and I was hoping to know about it.

  • Can you pipe flowers with this icing? Is it thick enough?

  • i want to learn the icing on the cakes that we buy from the bakeries.i once searched alot of recipes for that but all i ended up with was sugary and it hardened when i iced the cake and it had the same recipe as this one you have can you plz help me out.i have watched many of your cupcake decoration videos they are great

  • i used it togo on my cupcakes and it turned out good ,it did have a yellow tint like u said but still tasted nice :)

  • I just uploaded a video on rainbow cupcakes, please check it out! Thumbs up and Comment!

  • @TheYummyCupcakes Great video!

  • Thanks for doing this video! I will never buy buttercream icing again!

  • @PinkAddictive Home made is really the best for decorating and playing around with :)

  • Thanks for sharing. I was also looking for a tutorial on your channel for your cupcakes, are they homemade or do you use the box mixes? I would love to see a video on this if you don't already have one.

  • @ascrapalot I use a mix for the cupcakes I intend on decorating, it is just cheaper and faster :)

  • Thank You so much for this Recipe..I have looked all over the place for a Buttercream frosting Recipe and this by far was the Easiest to Follow!... I was wondering if you could help me out with a Fluffanutter Frosting...(how ever u spell it) lol..Its a Frosting that has Fluff in it..You can use it in Whoopie Pies!.. Thanks -Angie

  • @nkr1695 Thanks for the frosting recipe suggestion, I've been wanting to make home-made twinkies and it has a similar type filling.

  • NOOOO! I keep on getting the intro song stuck in my head!!!

  • @Pizzapie500 Oh no! Skip through the first 14 seconds an you'll be fine

  • I have been craving cupcakes with white icing for 17 days. I am going to make them today. Maybe. I need almond extract. I'm really not overly fond of vanilla, but I recognize that it is required in most things when one bakes. The icing looks as though I could eat it like fudge. Want. - roc

  • @popparoc46 Have you ever had home-made vanilla, since I've made my own my appreciation of vanilla has improve immensely. I can actually taste it in recipes now. The almond extract is equally yummy

  • Great tip

  • @grenier70 Thanks! :)

  • Thanks for sharing.

  • @susankim51 Thanks! :)

  • the whole time i was licking my lips...

  • I love how you give alot of alternative choices(:

  • @LilMissAnn7 Thanks!

  • thank yooou!!! <3

  • Could you maybe make a video on how to make French macaroons? I just love them bit don't know how to make 'em. I would really love it if you made a video :D

  • @PTuinman Never made them before, but they intrigue me greatly, I will try them soon!!!!!

  • NICE. I likey. I want to just grab a finger full and eat it

  • @silverscreamgrl Sweet buttery goodness.... :)

  • I have two questions: Can we use just butter or do we have to use shortening? and can I just beat it with a whisk? I don't think we have an electric mixer

  • @SweetRainSpirit You can use just butter, but it may not be as white. You can beat it anyway you like, by hand if necessary.

  • Oh yummy! That frosting looks heavenly.

  • @tuffydoodle Thanks for watching!

  • Yoyomax!! I just subscribed to you and i <3 <3 <3 your cupcake vids! I was wondering............ Can u make a hollywood themed cupcake?? I am having a hollywood themed bday party so i would love that! Please reply!!!!!

  • @KykylovesJB Thanks for the suggestion and thanks for the sub!

  • Nice - thanks; I wondered why yours was so white - and just as the thought 'can it be frozen' went through my head, you answered. If you were job hunting, I'd suggest you add mind reading skills - oh wait, you're a mom; it's already on there. :)

  • @thizizliz lol @ the mind reading mom skills :)

  • You can also make pale butter but putting heavy whipping cream in your food processor on high speed for about 7-10 minuets. It's also great to make homemade butter this way, because as we know, Homemade always taste better. I think it's the love that makes it so good.

  • @DJLRRT Great idea! I've made butter by mistake before by overbeating whipped cream

  • were do you get your silver bowls from? I have been lookin for then

  • @theresalovespink I've had them forever!!! I think some of them came from my mom and grand mom!

  • copha in australia (which has a not so nice taste ON ITS OWN ) or i dont know has any aussie tried making it was something like supafry or one of those vege type shortenings well maybe i will our butter is quite yellow we like our food dyes here lol lol lol lol

  • @sooouuuuper I find that the colour of butter varies greatly even within the same brand here. Always wondered if it was a dye issue or not :)

  • @yoyomax12 i learnt something today !!!! Australian butters are usually a rich yellow colour. That’s because Australian milk is rich in beta-carotene (vitamin A) as cows are mostly pasture fed. By comparison, European butters are pale in colour as the cows are commonly grain-fed and often housed in barns for much of the year. The breed of cow and the time of year can also make a difference and adding salt tends to make butter more yellow.

  • Artificial colouring is not used in Australia. ( according the butter website ) Salt first found its way into butter as a preservative, before refrigeration became an option, and is now an accepted flavour in Australian butter.

thank you so much for ur great channel

  • can i ask what the shelf life is like with using the milk in this? or do you just make as much as you need? x

  • @giggleclaire I usually make as much as I need, but you could store this in the fridge for 3-4 days safely, the sugar acts as a pretty good preservative.

  • is there any substitute for shortening.. i don't get it where i live, ive looked everywhere and no-one knows what it is!

  • @CookingWithLiccy shortening is lard in the uk if that helps x

  • @giggleclaire

Lard yes i can get that! thhanks so much! xx

  • @CookingWithLiccy

Lard is not the same as shortening, at least not in Canada. Lard is pork fat, and will add a weird taste and texture to icing. Blech. Shortening is solid vegetable fat - it has a much milder taste and is less greasy than lard. You would be better off to use all butter than to add lard.

You can also buy bright white icing colour, it's made by Americolor. It's great for whitening icing made with butter. :)

This is very close to the recipe I use! It's so tasty!

  • @j3wht

Thank you so much! i thought lard was some kind of animal fat. I have seen that on a website, ill look it up, thanks again :) x

  • @CookingWithLiccy Do you have Cookeen or Copha? I think this is similar

  • @yoyomax12

im not sure, isn't shortening vegetable fat? because i found that in one of my supermarkets.. but i wasnt sure xx

  • @CookingWithLiccy Shortening is vegetable fat

  • @yoyomax12

YEY i have it in the UK Great thanks for your help, i asked everywhere they had it and didnt even know what it was.. weird.. but thanks :) xx

  • @CookingWithLiccy You can just use butter, but the colour may be slightly yellow :)

  • I just made this today!! haha thats so cool : ) Today I used reg vanilla because I ended up using the wilton gel in green. I usually use clear vanilla though I get it at walmart

  • @fairy20tails If I'm colouring the icing, I don't really care if it is very white or not and I use regular vanilla

  • Do you have a recipe for a cream cheese frosting which is pipable? because all the ones i've tried is always to runny to decorate on cupcakes....

  • @1992jbrian I think all you'd have to do is to add icing/powdered sugar to the final result until you get a pipeable consistency.

  • i can buy white margarine in Alberta

  • @frillydilly52 Same here!

  • Love this recepy!!! I didn´t know we could put butter for icing!!!! Thanks

  • @ruiz1707 There you go! Thanks for watching!

  • PLEAAAASSSSSSEEEE DO A GREEN LANTERN CUPCAKE !! please please please !

  • @breakfastclub8539457 THanks for the suggestion!

  • do we have to sift the powdered sugar? thanks for posting this video! :)

  • @bananasplitscake Sift if you feel like it, but I never do, just blend a bit longer

  • I didn't know it could be frozen! When I first started to bake I made this icing and put in too much milk, so I added more sugar. It was too thick, so I added more milk. I went round and round with this until I had a great huge bowl of icing when my mother came to check on me! I will never forget that! LOL

  • @wildheart5 Been there, done that! lol. I freezer tested the icing and it seems to be fine if you re-beat it

  • I love your videos :)
