the hurt, love, happiness, misery, despair, and innocence that this song portrays and forces upon me. i can never get over it. it'll stick with me forever. the god of wine.... what a lovely sick sadistic sweet truth.
I close my eyes when shit hits the fan....i smile inside and think there we go...lets face it cos tomorrow is a new day andThe Lord is smiling and shedding tears at my situation...and he says...son..m proud of you.:)
One of the greatest songs about love, alcohol, and despair ever written, though there are many that I may have never heard, I still believe this is at least top 5, without a doubt!
I was a teenager in love with my first, and we used to just sit and listen to this album, what awesome memories this song brings, and the band itself is awesome
This is one of those songs where i can't even describe the feeling it gives me. Funny how I used to put this on repeat back when I was 12-13 yrs old just 3 years before i started having drinking problem, and it's not until now that i truly feel that line "And the god of wine is crouched down in my room. You let me down, I said it. Now I'm going down and your not even around"-- an all encompassing strange, reminiscent feeling where art does imitates life and vise versa and you're the piece in it.
had a year clean and relapsed listening to this song (not the songs fault), it's mesmerizing "the alcohol it permeates, and soon the cells give way." fucking beautiful lyrics and so true. My favorite part is when he sings about how he has the god of wine in his room crouched down (hidden) and he relapses
had a year clean and relapsed listening to this song (not the songs fault), it's mesmerizing "the alcohol it permeates, and soon the cells give way." fucking beautiful lyrics and so true.
I love this song, but I feel like some of your are digging too deep into this. I understand everyone can interpret it their own way, but isn't this song about a guy driving drunk and killing his girlfriend in an accident? He feels total guilt and is incredibly emotional about it.
*sigh* my mom ruining our relationship due to wine and drinking...can we ever get clean again? You let me down, I said it. A sadness I can't erase...we can't get back again there's someone who understands you more than I do and I know I know I can't keep it all together I'm going down and you're not even around.
Easily my favorite album of the nineties. Junior High/High School is inherently connected to this album for me. Their other albums are great as well but they didn't connect as well with the general public, probably because they changed up the sound quite a bit on the second album and then their lineup on the the third. Those albums didn't stand a chance after this juggernaut.
@edenriot I agree, mostly. The first was the most consistent. Plus Eric Valentine's work on that album was one of the main reasons it was so damn awesome. But you got to admit that their second album is very creative, and for that i praise 3EB. I really love the feel of that album....
I hear this song and my heart breaks right back into 1999. She was the one who got away... but she got lost in that bottle of red wine at such a young age....
My marriage is an example of how the god of wine can ruin a beautiful thing between two people who love each other and don't know when to say when, enough is enough. God of Wine won this time, next time... if I get a second chance, Ill destroy you!
This is a beautiful song. Gives an insight into the dangers and struggles of alcoholism and how painful it can be for both addict and the ones around them. Great song!
Stephan Jenkins is basically telling you "dont drink alcohol" and his logic shows, a dependency on alcohol ruins the lives of many, even the music industry. Look at Pantera, Phil Anselmo's alcoholism due to a back injury led to Pantera's disbandment, becuase Phil was alienating himself from the rest of the band. One thing led to another, and Dimebag Darrell unfortunately got killed. To this day, Vinnie Paul does not want contact with Phil Anselmo. Just goes to show you, alcohol ruins everything.
One of the best and most underrated Third Eye Blind songs. I really like this one and Wake For Young Souls. They are kind of similar, and I think they are both underrated, but excellent songs.
I never really connected with this song until I took a girl out whom i was crushing on....we had way too many drinks...she got really emotional and crazy...almost (no wait) completely embarrased, i walked away from the situation and haven't looked back since...glad I found out right away...like Pontius, i washed my hands..."Hey Psycho Bitch...get HELP!!!"
@blackirishlassy no i'm not an asshole...and she is a psycho-bitch...she did it again at the same bar with a mutual friend just last night...yes, not all who do that are PB's, but this one IS!!!! She needs help! You're quick to call someone an asshole when you have no idea what you're talking about...sounds like its happened to you before; and let me guess, he DIDN'T call you the next day either...
I use to sing to this song all the time when I just couldn't get clean and I was sobbing. I hurt so bad and wanted to get well. This song is truly an inspirational song.

@spawn22222 thanks for clearing that up , i was really really confused due to the zodiac references and by the way there is no reason to call me a dumbass, a simple "yea, its about alcohol" would have sufficed..but no you have to put someone else down because deep down you have low self esteem and probably were tormented as a child and /or had an abusive parent who worshiped the "God of Wine".. so i pray for you my friend
@CCS518 I think it's more cruel to make those unnecessary mean assumptions about my childhood than to call someone a dumbass. It also seems you get what the song is about based on your reply. So why ask it such a dumb question? I'm fine, but I just couldn't believe someone could ask such a question when it's so obvious. And again, your accusations where irrelevant.
@CCS518 its kinda a double meaning. It's about alcohol, but as Dionysus IS the god of wine, it alludes to the same thing yet again. Like alot of their songs, your perception defines the meaning....at least to me anyhow.
This is one of the songs that helped me get through those close to me that worshiped the god of wine daily. I LOVE IT! Thank you Third Eye Blind for the lyrical genius of this song and writing it down so that it could help me get through one of the hardest struggles my family has ever had to face. <3
I remember the night I listened to this on the way home from San Diego on the northbound 5. Nothing like driving an old Benz S Class going about 120 with this song in the background.
