Great sculpt, an excellent likeness. The surface detail at the end is really mind-blowing! Are you using any special tools like a stylus tablet or is this just with a mouse? I'm also interested in how you accomplished the time-lapse screen capture. Cheers!
I have found many programs on doing sculpting what program is the best and the best chosen by the editor or by people. Maya, Blender, Max, Sculptris, ZBrush 4.0, Mudbox, or Cinema 4D
I have just found Blender and want to try some sculpting. but i cannot find out how you start out with the basic shape. i know that you sculpt it to match the shape of the image, but how do you do it so smoothly?
@nymonkey55 I make the base model through poly-by-poly modeling.
To sculpt things smoothly, I start at the lowest level of subdivision, sculpt everything I can, then subdivide and repeat at the next subdivision level. By doing this, you avoid most of the lumpyness you get from subdividing a whole bunch at the start and sculpting at the highest subdiv level immediately.
that looks amazing, the only flaw in it I see is that the head is a bit too thin. Croc and gator heads are generally wide and kinda flat. Other than that though, it looks astounding.
@Salivize This is part of blenders features, their lasted build is still in the beta stage, but I find it's still pretty stable, but yeah, sculpting, cloth sim, fluid sim, smoke sim, physics, game creation, plus its all free is always the best part.
I am quite new to sculpting, but 1 question that I have is how can you have so much detail, with pretty much no viewport lag? My machine starts lagging bad at around 200.000 polygons - sculpting not so much, but texture painting is horrible!
@tek5828 2.5 has a multires modifier that allows you to switch between different subdivision levels. I sculpt with lower subdivision levels at first, then subdivide with the multires modifier to sculpt at higher resolutions.
Amazing job. I work with blender too, and I've gotten the knack of modeling and texturing non organic models, but for creatures like this, as well as humans, where do you get the anatomy from? I mean, how did you know so well about the muscular details of the animal when you were modeling?
Wow, someone knows his crocodiles! :o Also how do you use textures in sculpting? I can't seem to place them on there with a drag, rotate and place input because I think I forget the hotkey for it? :/
@Jeepster3D Thanks for the fast reply! :D It turned out I needed more polygons though and to scale up the object for some reason :p Took me ages to figure out what was wrong, I had to turn it up to over 4 million :o
How fast is your computer? Whenever I try to do sculpting my computer starts to move at a crawling pace. I am thinking it might be worth giving another try in 2.5.
@shotangone Woah now, let's not get out of hand. Blender sculpt is fantastic, but in blender I can only get about 6-7 mil polys before it starts to crawl. ZBrush gets me to about 30mil before I even notice the hit.
Holy crap, that was awesome! I didn't even know you could do this! Sculpting? That was excellent dude, for real. Does the model have to be SUPER high polygons to be able to do that? Like use the subsurf modifier to the extreme?

2 things 1. fucking pure awesomeness 2. how did you set a picture in the background to work off of?

@DeniseStarFish Load it into the UVimage editor then when you go back into 3D view set it as the background image

awesome. could you recommend some skulpting tutorials? I'm having some difficulties getting my models to look the way I want them to.

Whaaa... this is Blender?? o.O; It looks like ZBrush... i didn't know you could sculpt like this in Blender... i thought it was all polygon based.
Is this a special addon or window in Blender?

@Salivize Zbrush is polygon based too. It's just got a lot of subdivisions so it's really smooth.
MASproductionss 5 months ago
@MASproductionss Actually they use a propriatory system called "pixol" which isn't the same as polygons and has much lower memory requirements

hi, would anyone know what is the career entry point for someone skilled in Blender and what is a ballpark salary in $ US or EU?
Thanks in advance!

pas0003 1 year ago
@pas0003 Here are some tricks to increase performance:
-Don't use an extremely low poly base mesh - if you want to work with a cube, subdivide a few times
-Turn off double sided faces
-Use the multires modifier only (no mirror/subsurf)
-Turn off global undo (user prefs window)
-Lower undo steps to something like 16
-change the memory limit to something like 50
the viewport will be slower while texture painting, so it's a good idea to lower the preview resolution as much as possible
Jeepster3D 1 year ago 10
@Jeepster3D thanks for these tricks :) Never thought of tweaking the memory&undo settings...

ok i have blender 2.49 and have yet to find a blender 2.5 so i was wondering if u could tell me where u found it!
kagomeadc 1 year ago
Seems like this really is the new way of modelling
Can you still get a low res model and have a normal map generated easily in 2.5? I saw this in a 2.4 tutorial somewhere.

Did you subdivide the basic model like TONNSS of times before you started sculpting or can 2.5 somehow add vertices while you sculpting?
tek5828 1 year ago
@tek5828 2.5 has a multires modifier that allows you to switch between different subdivision levels. I sculpt with lower subdivision levels at first, then subdivide with the multires modifier to sculpt at higher resolutions.
Jeepster3D 1 year ago
@Jeepster3D that subdivides the whole object right?
tek5828 1 year ago
@tek5828 ya, it subdivides the whole thing
there is a developer who's working on adaptive subdivision that works kinda like sculptris, but i don't really like using it
check out his blog for more about it farsthary.wordpress. com

i have a sculpt and i hit 400k vertices and i was worried i was doing it wrong. is it ok to go really high for a detailed model?
richmeister4eva 1 year ago
@richmeister4eva don't worry about it! i've had some sculpts with over 6 million vertices
Jeepster3D 1 year ago
@richmeister4eva Yes it is, as long as your computer can handle it.
If you want to aim the model for a game, make a low poly version of it and bake a normal map from the high detailed model. Good luck

this sculpt ended up being 1.5 million polygons
towards the end I was the multires modifier at level 6
Jeepster3D 2 years ago
@Gr1mmReap3rT2 Never use subsurf if you're sculpting, it'll be ultra slow, even on a blazing fast rig. Use the Multires modifier instead.
