Awesome Fighter and excellent Model!! My respect, and congrats for this display. There´s a very similar design based in this fighter, that was used by GAINAX Studios in their movie "Wings of Honneamise", a very good and beautifull movie. Search in Youtube by "Royal Space Force (Wings of Honneamise) - Fly Fragment". I guarantee some emotion tears. :D Seeya!!
i chose to build a balsa glider with coreless motor and rotor prop from micro heli(and li-po battery). it took off and flew for about 1/2 a mile and then i lost it because it was only about 6" long and couldn't see it at that altitude. it really had the sillouette of the j7w.
@frackcha they also had a turbine powered plane called the j7w-1. before the supersonic age. as you can tell, they scrapped the whole deal at the end of the war. (so it is told.)
In all relevant aspects, it's basically a copy of the old Curtiss-Wright XP-55 Ascender from the 1930s. The big difference is that the XP-55 actually flew, was tested and was first. Beautiful job on the RC plane! Looks and flies great.
Actually that plane was originally designed during the world war II Era so that Jet pulpulsion could be mounted it was never really designed to be used with a propeller system.
Quick question though where did you get the music from though??
@wjeon143 Sounds like "Sweet Harmony" by "The Beloved". If you ever saw the MTV show "Beavis & Butthead", the video for this song was used on one of the episodes. (It's the one full of "nekkid chicks" as in "they must have known that the song would suck - that;s why they tossed in all the nekkid chicks")
I guess it goes with out saying that you didn't find the canard configuration particularly difficult to pilot, but was there an initial learning curve?
He was barely into production just at the end of the war, but he would not able to compete with the HELLCAT American, and who also appeared too late to participate in the conflict between Americans and Japanese.
Absolutely Awesome! So cool and so original. Thanks for not doing any aerobatics. That stuff gets boring fast. I would like to fly them the way real planes fly. Maybe just a few tricks, but nothing radical.
It supposedly was able to completely outmanuever and outgun any allied aircraft... Imagine if Japan had these planes and started production on them around the mid-late 1942?
@kkage2: The Kyūshū J7W1 Shinden (震電, "Magnificent Lightning") fighter was expected to be a highly maneuverable interceptor, but only two were finished before the end of war. Plans were also drawn up for a jet-powered version (J7W2 Shinden Kai),[2] but this never left the drawing board. The J7W was developed for the Imperial Japanese Navy as a specific response to the B-29 Superfortress raids on the Japanese homeland.
@uglyengineer initially it was designed as a jet plane, but they couldn't get the engines they wanted, so they re-designed the plane to be piston-powered.
I don't know if they couldn't get the jet engines or not, what I DO KNOW is that the plane was introduced too late in the war to make a difference. Remember, they only had two prototypes, PERIOD. I don't think all the jet engines in the world would have made a difference or not, they simply didn't have the time to fully work the design out to full production model. Its a little difficult to say they simply didn't have access to engines with only two prototypes. I think they just ran out of time.
@uglyengineer thats true, but remember, they didnt know the war was going to end when they started building the prototypes.. And all i'm trying to say is that the planes were initally designed to be jet engine powered, but due to problems in germany they couldnt get the engines..
What a superb model, it seems to fly beautifully but must glide in on it's belly to land. The actual aircraft, one of which is in storage at the Smithsonian, didn't have that option!
Someone please photoshop this plane with USAF decals/marksing, ROCAF, ROKAF, Russian decals(please use blue stars or subdued grey stars no commie/facist-red)

Hi Michael... Very nicely done on the model! How did you get the CG established? Trial and error on a smaller model I am supposing? It looks like it flies beautifuuly, and congratulations! I have been experimenting with canard designs for many years, but most of them use wing-tip rudders, but I can see the value of bringing them inboard, as some of my designs tried to cart-wheel/spin, because there was too much mass outboard, I suppose, forcing me to make them fairly large, etc, Nice! Stan~
Had description, photos, measurements of this as a kid in 1964 and it still intrigues me -wonder what ever happened to the lone survivor that our military got.Nice E-R/C :)
I don´t believe the japanese copied the XP-55 Ascender. The XP-55 wasn´t very succesful - some might even call it a failure. Hence there wouldn´t be much point in copying it.
Totally agree. Planes with this layout could be very unstable and difficult to control. The XP55 was awful to fly and was lost when it's pilot totally lost control.
If you check on the dates you will find that the canard gliders made to evaluate the design flew before the Ascender was built. The Shinden was a genuinely original design by a brilliant Japanese engineer which has influenced advanced aircraft design to this day.
The Kyushu Shiden was designed as a short-range bomber interceptor to defend the Japanese home islands. It was to be armed with four massive 30 mm cannons in the nose and would have been a formidable hit-and-run foe. The Americans were working on a similar cunard-configuration pusher design, called the Curtis XP-55. Although the Shiden was flown a few times before the end of the war, the XP-55 was cancelled in 1945, with the advent of jet aircraft.
Nice shots of this innovative design...must have been tricky learning to fly a cunnard...wonder if it was so for the test pilots who flew it for the first time. Must have been extremely manueverable. Hat off to you flying such a beautiful model...I'd be afraid of crashing the sucker. :-)

The Kyushu Shiden was designed as a short-range bomber interceptor to defend the Japanese home islands. It was to be armed with four massive 30 mm cannons in the nose and would have been a formidable hit-and-run foe.
