Setting that on a side, I wouldn't have a problem if he made a joke on some other kid or on some adult friend of his, but those football players are neither children nor his friends. I understand there is no harm in jokes, but that kid should imho just learn when a joke is appropriate and when it's not. There are simple social rules for that.
