I live in South Florida and lived in Miami for three decades. I used to play this song when I would come over the causeway to the Beach. Fond memories. It certain evokes images of early 1960's Miami.
"The Nightfly" is one of the albums I have that has absolutely no "bad" tracks. I can listen to it from beginning to end without skipping a single song. Pure musical bliss! Fagen is a genius!
This must be following the rest of the theme of this CD, the 50's, back the way things were.....I open my umbrella for you as we get out of the car.....The Nightfly, AM overnight DJ.....Goodbye Look...the way things were in certain parts of the world, and you a tourist on touchy political ground. Yeah, the whole vibe of the CD was a great story of several people's lives then.
@MRresievil310 : Bogota is not a city in the Western developed world's supposed leading economy... the romantic petrensions of Miami are about the same as those of that other shithole Las Vegas.....
My mother, rest her soul, loved this song. It had the "swing" beat and sound that reminded her of the days when, as she put it, "I used to really cut a rug!" I played the grooves off this album. It was wonderful. Lester the Night Fly was the man!
What an absolutely wonderful song this is! And I'm with you, castertunes...the best way to listen to The Nightly is in its entirety, no skipping, no shuffling. (I'd even go one further and say I'd go grabbing for my vinyl copy as well, but I'm just being old school...)
Is there truly any better way of listening to this album?
Simply because a recording if void of pops and hiss doesn't mean that it will take you back to the times you were introduced to the song and had to get up, gladly, and pick up the needle to play it again, and again.
This has been one of my favorite albums since college when it came out - my ex-husband introduced me to Donald Fagen - one of the only things he did that I would thank him for
Amazing tune!! I was there in South Beach in '95 in love with this hot 28 yr old beauty, this songs brings back some fond memories. wow to this day I still think of 28 as the perfect age for a woman. You never know where you're at until time passes, and then you hear the song and there she is again. Here's to you Liz wherever you are. as always, me.
The Nightfly, Kamakiriad and Morph the cat. Does Fagen have any other solo albums in between? I'll never forget the New York rock and soul revue concert I went to back in 93 or 94. It was awesome. He and Becker with Boz Scaggs, Michael McDonald, Phoebe Snow, Chuck Jackson. It was definitely an all star cast.
Two years ago I reported Estefan Enterprises to the FBI, but the biggest disappointment was when GLORIA and EMILIO ESTEFAN confessed that they knew about, and agree with, everything that has been going on in their companies.
For more details search FRANK AMADEO and GLORIA ESTEFAN CRIMINAL on You Tube.
No, Will Lee is playing and Ernie Ball Earthwood bass. They're no longer made...they were almost as big as a Mariachi bass but sounded incredible...I owned one.
As far as who is playing exactly what in the tune (regarding Philliganes and Lee), I'm speculating that the bass line was written out and doubled with real bass and synth bass. It sounds as though thats what may be happening - although I could be wrong.
I have. Check out 'Home at Last' from the AJA album. This shuffle is good but I'll bet it's looped. Listen to the sizzle on the crash cymbal on each chorus. Sounds a bit synthetic ... in a good way!
Maybe I ´ve not heard shuffle grooves enough:) "home at Last" - great halftime shuffle. I ´ve checked it out live by KeitCarlock. Steely Dan.Amazing performance.
This one looped? i´m suprised! Maybe. Anyway great groove. My favourite. Simple but actually not.
Marcus Miller has also contributed the bass line to this album. Its a masterpiece as well as Aja and Gaucho , in my opinion. Of course I love all of Fagen/Dan.
Another good song "Goodbye Look". "The Colonel's standing in the sun with his stupid face, the glasses...and the gun.". How about the title song. "I'm Lester the Nightfly, hello Baton Rouge....." A verse from one song on this album was used even in a Simpson's episode.
You're missing alot of important facts about this recording. Check out what the bass line REALLY consists of (not what you think). Would you believe Will Lee was on this album? How about that this was probably the FIRST digital recording of it's kind. Engineers used to use this to set up their equipment it's so clean. This album was a big impact to the whole industry.
I just get so happy listening to the walking bass on this track:0)
It's my favorite album by Donald Fagen. All the lyrics are really good and it took me a long time to understand his irony.. "There'll be spandex jackets one for everyone"
