I saw this movie in college in 1997. Right afterward, this girl came back from vacation in Rio and was talking on and on about the street kids in Brazil; "oh how poor they are, oh the poor things, why is nobody telling the world about it?" and the usual self-righteous shit.

I told her "this has been going on for 20 years."

Esse diretor é um pilantra, ele devia ter dado oportunidade para o garoto tentar sair da miséria e ñ fez Hector Babenco vc é um gênio sim da estupidez, da babaquice que vcs fizeram com o rapaz que acabou assassinado pela polícia.

Thank you mbatang for posting this great movie. It has been some 25 years since I saw this movie back in South America when I was very young. Unfortunately many children not only in Brazil but around the world still live in such terrible conditions. I was very sad to hear that years later, the young actor who portrayed Pixote, Fernando Ramos Da Silva was killed by the police under circumstances very similar to the movie. RIP.
