Pepper spray him, then run. If someone sees you beating up a guy who has a baseball bat, you will both go to jail. Besides, most attacks like this are done as part of a gang or mob where others may have weapons (I.e. Knives, pipes, chains, etc.).
@Madwand1 If someone sees me pepper spray someone with a bat, onlookers will tell the police I pepper sprayed someone with a bat. If however you beat the guy with a bat to a pulp, you will cause great bodily injury which would mean you would be arrested and sent to jail. So no, my logic is not stupid.
@Haseeb2 Your logic is stupid in that you assume you go to jail for defending yourself. Pepper spraying is as much a battery as striking someone, so using your ignorant logic, you go to jail for both. Or you walk away for both. Your choice. Was it necessary to beat him to a pulp anyway? Why didn't you just beat him enough to subdue him, then holler for onlookers to call 911?
@Madwand1 What people go to jail for in self-defense situations is when they cause a person bodily harm and they exceed what is necessary to remove themselves from the situation. If a person has a bat and you close the distance, the man in the video suggested using 'combatives' which means you engage him by inflicting injury. Pepper spray will only temporarily hurt someone. When you use 'combatives' you run a greater risk of seriously hurting someone.
@Haseeb2 I know the difference. You also run the risk of living. Combatives do not, by default, cause great personal injury. If you're too stupid to know when to stop, yeah, you should go to jail. But if you beat a guy with a bat down, and someone witnessed it, you're more than likely to be the complainant if you acted prudently and also attended to the criminal by calling for emergency services.
@Madwand1 If you close the distance on someone intent on taking your head off with a bat, changes are you are not going to take it easy on the guy. You could punch or strike a person one time and very seriously hurt them. The moment emergency services gets involved, you have some explaining to do and there may or may be witnesses who may or may not side with you. At any rate, I would rather not have to explain anything to a cop or an EMS tech. At that point everything you say can be used.
@chevygearhead454 I'm not sure what you're asking really. I'm assuming that what you're saying is 'what do I do if I dont see the bat when he swings?'. Well then I hope you have really good reflexes and move but if not, you're pretty boned.
One of the things I've been taught in selfdefense is too make sure you pay attention to every aspect of your opponent (or everyone in a very hostile environment.). Watch his hands, if it looks like he's holding something, dont risk him not having a weapon.
I have been on both sides of this equation in several stick fights ( large sticks of 1' diameter or more, and only wearing a fencing mask and lacrosse gloves for protection .) People with very little training can close the gap on you while taking little to no damage. I would say it is actually much harder to maintain striking range than it is to initiate the clinch. If you understand this reality, then you should also understand the terrifying destructive power of the blade. Important stuff.
"As soon as you see it, you've gotta come inside and use combatives." I think you might want to word that a bit more carefully. Impress upon your students that if they, the citizens, initiate the fight when any reasonable option exists to escape, they are at best an active participant in mutual combat and at worst committing assault. Not morally, but legally.
@glockcocker LOL - we had washing machines in the Army and everything. But if you'll feel better, I'll roll around in the mud a little for the next video. ;-)

@cqctraining LOL no need to go rolling in the mud for me but thanks for the offer. Yeah definately am a firm believer in our second amendment rights as well as many others. You like seem pretty cool guy, and a great fighter/instructor none the less. Thanks for being such a good sport about me busting balls.
Because these are the same bdu's I wore in combat, defending our country's ideals and liberties and they have special meaning to me. Make sense to you?

@Haseeb2 Stupid logic. You don't think if someone sees you pepper spray a guy with a bat, you'd have the same results?

But what about if the person will use a closed hand? I mean, if he/she will use the two hands for holding.

@MischaC That's a load of crap. A person with a bat who is about to give chase does not necessarily present a reasonable chance to escape.
Madwand1 1 day ago
@Madwand1 Didn't say they did, necessarily. Worked great for me though, didn't take a scratch.

that's the only way to defende a stick attack. well explained

I completely agree with this video. There's no perfect move against impact weapons, the best thing you can do is close the distance!
