  • fukin awesome song what a talent,such a shame!!!

  • brilliant

  • perfect intro adore28!!!!!!

  • 3 albums mate...."warsaw", that was their original name, and their self titled album

  • @deftones311100 They only had the two actual studio albums as Joy Division though (plus eps)

  • agreed with muskateering. true artist/pioneers

  • ...quase ninguem sabe, mais aquela dança do Renato Russo (Legião Urbana) era inspirada no Ian Curtis, muito massa.

  • @jml42784 Absolutely. This is history in the making: an exorcism live on stage for all the world to see. Horrific and beautiful.

  • This and Sound of music by Joy Division is Epic -

  • excepcional !!! estraordinaria,,,essa musica e a mehor !!! na minha opiniao !!!

  • Иен просто красавчик...

  • singing onwards and upwards to his death....

  • epic dancing

  • 33 people have no idea what was happening here.

  • Someone take these dreams away, that point me to another day, a duel of personalities. That stretch all true realities, that keep calling me, they keep calling me, keep on calling me, they keep calling me...

  • bernie looks really cool here.

  • Shadows of the Damned

  • Mesmerising performance from Ian as usual. I could watch him all day.

  • Ian, stay in the shadows. Nobody will ever understand you. I am one of the few. This civilization is dead. My father said so, and so have yours. We are moving on. Let's roam. Let's rock and roll.

  • Golliwogg APPROVES of this song.

  • ...many years ago i hate the poor quality of the "here are the young men" video - but nowdays i love it...

  • fuck yeah!

  • maybe this was his suicide feelings hmm

  • Totp. top of the page

  • Best rift ever written for us ALL, my dad calls me every day.

  • i love this song. It keeps me sane. Thanks Curtis

  • Damn telemarketers!

  • Haunting!

  • Happy Birthday Ian

  • I love the loooooong intro this song has!

  • 33 people have dead souls indeed

  • @orwellwoody OK, I am now convinced. I have noticed 33 dislikes on a few of their songs and now I am sure it is the same idiots who have nothing better to do.

  • great video ,

  • @jml42784 I agree! It's the best music video on Youtube for me.

  • @pedrodinizsousa @jml42784 I agree too. Killed it.

  • this is my favourite video on YouTube. The way he dances in the dark and then shows up to meet the crowd in the dark. It's raw and breathtaking. Just like life.

  • can u say speed?...

  • keep truckin' at first I thought the singer was doin' some early Pop Blockin" dance, then I watched it and picture rave glow sticks in his hands!!. humm... interesting.. this band obviously paved the way for future generations... great song, do like the reznor version better. But I have always liked the legendary pink dots, joy division, and vnv nation! thanks for the video.

  • Top ten band of all time hands fucking down

  • Joy Division didn't spark any "movement". They represented the last vestige of truly creative rock n' roll. By 1980 the corporate stranglehold was complete, creativity in the industry died, and all we were left with were MTV videos and boring wannabes like Nirvana. Yawn.

  • @whisky2roxy Not Nirvana, you should say, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Lenny Kravitz, and all that kind of trash.

  • @thedarkglobe It's all the same. Since the '80s, rock "music" is basically watered-down rubbish conjured up in corporate boardrooms by marketing executives, accountants, and businessmen. Their job was simple: find some "cool" looking musicians cranking out some noise that tries to sound like the Doors, Stooges, Joy Division etc., and market the hell out of it. Youngsters, starving for new music, lapped it up like thirsty dogs. It continues to this day. What a shame.

  • @whisky2roxy Thanks for your comment. Really., it´s a shame and a infamy. You will never listen again twelve minutes masterpieces songs as The Doors or Pink Floyd did it. All in the past

  • @whisky2roxy Manufactured shit has existed forever, deal with it, there's still loads of great bands. Try listening to something other than TotP before you bitch about every musician of the past thirty years.

  • @biomusiccube I do, and there are plenty of great technical musicians in rock over the last 30 years, no question. Problem is, the music itself sucks. No creativity, no inspiration, no experimentation, just boring retreads of sounds from the 60's and 70's. However, keep telling yourself the new junk is wonderful, the recording executives' fat bonuses depend on it!! (BTW-what is TotP?)

  • RIP IAN CURTIS

  • Wished I'd taken the opportunity to go to England and see a live performance before Ian killed himself. New Order were ok, but not like Ian.

  • Joy Division did more for music with just 3 albums than most other bands do with 10. I think I came a little watching this.

  • @Muskateering ROFLMAO! But you're right though. They pioneered Post Punk but brought melancholy to Alternative music to bands that were to come after them. From Bauhaus, U2, to The Cure, if it wasn't for Joy Division, music wouldn't be what it is today.

  • @Kento617, you're dead on. Joy division spawned the real, powerful music vine. the other one came from led zepplin, the who, black sabbath, and the stones staying too long at the party. from that came the lazy glam/ arena metal and energyless electropop...yikes...and more modern equivelants are nu metal and creed-type bands verses, say, the strokes...I think we're in a deep negative phase again, because of the massive industry influence....

  • @Sudhish86 Thanks for the great comment man! Im not really sure what to think anymore. The mainstream music isn't the best things I've seen, except The Foo Fighters; awesome band. All I can really suggest is just keep digging deeper into the Indie scene, you will find them. Here are some: Blood Red Shoes: I wish I was someone better, We Are Scientist: The scene is dead, lousy reputation, and Radio 4:enemies like this. Keep listening to great music man!

  • @Kento617, lol. I've been digging forever. I'm quite convinced everyone has lost their way. when culture is too perverse, music becomes too indulgent, purposeless, and all vanity. I think that's the problem now. Some bands avoid one of those deadly sins, but I have yet to see a band with so much character and vision that will bring life. Just look at the band names. they're all imperceptive names. All the greatest bands had great names. beatles, joy division, radiohead, u2, nirvana, pixies

  • @Sudhish86 You sir, are awesome! I love Nirvana, my favorite band! They changed everything! Pixies' Gouge Away, epic! OK Computer, Incredible

  • @Sudhish86 great name, great band? man, don't waste your time, check Wu Lyf out NOW. Wu Lyf stands for World Unite Lucifer Youth Foundation... their first LP released only months ago is one of the most beautiful things that I ve heard

  • @yackoftheyear, checked them out. they're mid-level. that is, better than mainstream, but not worth remembering. they remind me of a lot of other bands, musically. energetic but lowly, conceptually. actually, the one common denominator of all great music, imo, is a certain level of majesty or forwardness, if you get me. that is lacking in music now. bands aren't forward because everyone adheres to relativistic thinking; so there is no conviction.

  • @Muskateering two albums please...... UNKNOWN PLEASURES AND CLOSER.....

  • @Muskateering two albums please...... Uknown Pleasures And Closer.....

  • @jonastrkr

Sort of three......there was an album by the band warsaw, originally scrapped alledgedly due to the band disliking production values. wiki it - wont let me post you the link here

  • @Naff83 warsaw it´s different, i´m talk about joy division I KNOW, IT´s the same band, but unknown pleasures and closer- the only official joy division albums....

  • @jonastrkr and you could say it was only one album, because Closer was released after Ian died

  • @odiseoaxe a posthumously album, but Ian participate, were Joy Division, Ian died after so it's a joy division album, 2 albums...... but forget it, we love you Ian Curtis wherever you are....

  • @Muskateering I think you mean two albums. Unknown Pleasures - 1979, and Closer - 1980.

  • @TheUtopianSquirrel No one ever mentions Still .. ok, it was post-IC, but nevertheless a brilliant addition to their discography.

I love my grey linen covered vinyl copy of Still. :)

  • @Muskateering 2 albums mate

  • Disturbing. That's what genuine songs look like when Ian sang them.

  • they keep callin' me!!! <3

  • SAY JESUS-TI=TO RISING =UNITED FEAR OF1 SCOTCH

  • There goes Ian showing off his trademark epilepsy dance! :D

  • @NintendoSegaSonyGuy the thing about his epilepsy dance, and i'm sure you know.. is that it wasn't always a voluntary thing- if ever.. it was compensation or covering up for lack of control of his body.. very sad.. shows, singing, performing took every ounce of energy out of him.. his life was hell- but it was a truly tragic loss-- i was born in 1979 but i know rad fuckin music when i hear it-- and joy division was nothing short of epic

  • that was a long time ago that performance

  • He was amazing... I mean the whole bend ... but still ... LOVE THIS ♥

  • smacked out of his fucking head

  • that song must've hit a nerve within him..

  • that song must've hit a nerve within him

  • His songs are so sad, yet so appealing. Great musician, great singer.

  • best 3 minute intro ever!!

  • call me nuts but ian reminds me of jim morrision.

which is a complete compliment, trust me.

  • @KazakageoftheSand That's not at all far out! Morrison was his biggest idol, lyrically and musically! The song sounds kind of like "The Soft Parade" from The Doors. Also at this concert he looks alot like him, because of the brown leather trousers and black shirt...

  • @BluesYourAss I agree, Morrison was Curtis's inspiration

  • Leah Hirsig asked Aleister Crowley to paint her as a "dead soul" and in fact Crowley painted several portraits ...

  • they have such a great sound, always sounds current to me.

  • 30 dislikes??????dear oh dear

  • This is my favourite Joy Division song, absolutely huge!!!

  • what's to say? most our generation died on giving in , some died; like ian, on not giving in... some survived uncompromising

  • if i was i roadie...every show i'd be thinking "yeah, great song - and there ian goes again ... swating imaginary flies"

  • I wonder if David Byrne of the Talking Heads took some dance lessons from Ian.

  • holy god what the ufckinf ehll!? This is probably the greatest video I will ever see... Ian was a true expressionist.

  • Great song!

  • Proper Music,...............no phone numbers to vote for your best performer, fucking monkeys...!

  • Probably the best live song of all time.

Nobody does dark like Joy division.

  • ...

  • Why you should always bring a camera or cam corder to gigs. You never know when small time bands will become legends.

  • Ian was my fascination musically n psychologically... Tormented makes for brilliant artists...

This track runs thru my blood n makes me feel whole... Without chemical stimulants... Joy division were n still are idolised by ppl who really got lost in the heartbeat

  • best video on Youtube...

  • I can see where John Lydon ripped off this band in PIL!

  • I can se where John Lydon ripped off this band in PIL!

  • @bowiemars this fuckin geek is speaking spanish. smh. lame

  • @UniversalPHAZE I think you're not very universal, you should change your nick

  • @bowiemars Al fin alguien dice la verdad. Oh and btw UniversalPHAZE, Spanish fucking owns you so start learning it.

  • @UniversalPHAZE are you ok? dude? shut the fuck..up!!

  • excellent music better than the crap we get now adays katy perry beyonce rihana & all that shit as theyre fake. now bands like joy division the cure nin etc are real tallent

  • Yes to hell, beautifull music, today a young man ask to me if I belive in god, he said people doesn't belive in god going to hell, I say that I dont belive in hell of course, what a naif!

  • I am with openmindset on not having ever seen these guys on tv or on video, just listened to the albums and MAYBE you might catch some of this on a college/alt radio back in the day at midnight. AND it wasn't my album, it was usually hanging with a friend of a friend and all bringing our albums to listen together, because we were all broke asses. The access to music these days blows me away now that I reflect back on it.

  • This is easily their best song

  • Calling a young mans suicide selfish is screwed up. Depression and other mental disorders are not a walk in the park. For someone like him, to be so young and talented with success in the near future and a whole life ahead of him, deciding to hang himself, he must have been in intense emotional pain and suffering. R.I.P. Ian

  • @kristinahoerler you speak the truth about Ian, thank you

  • @kristinahoerler I believe Curtis had made at least two previous suicide attempts before he was successful....and I also believe that he drank quite a bit of alcohol before his suicide. People are always more prone to attempt suicide when their inhibitions are down and I think that alcohol or drug related suicides tend to be more successful....statistically. Perhaps one could be justified in stating that he was selfish as his pain was gone while the pain of those who loved him lingers.

  • dude, was he weird!

  • I love joy division's music but ian curtis's suicide was selfish.

  • @Stalinsurfstheweb What was he supposed to do, live in misery just so other people wouldn't have to deal with the pain of losing him? People who say suicide is selfish and expect others to live for them, are selfish.

  • @xXPinkGoddessXx Look, life is about getting thorough it and doing something productive with yourself. It's not like anything bad happened to Ian Curtis, he wasn't deeply traumatized by anything and didn't have severe depression as a teenager or anything like that. Instead, his mariage was failing and he suffered from a 'poorly medicated epilepsy, so big fucking deal. There are millions of people around the world who live in less than a dollar a day, yet you don't hear about these people >>

  • @Stalinsurfstheweb That's because psychological pain (and even physical pain) is entirely relative. If you were placed in the physical and psychological conditions some people consider normal, you would probably die in a very short span of time. That's not because you would choose weakness, or lack the same will to live, it would simply be because you're not accustomed to what other people are. What is mundane for one person to live through or achieve can be a great accomplishment for another.

  • @Stalinsurfstheweb If you had been dealt the same cards Ian was, you would have turned out the exact same way, and the same applies for everyone. It's always easy to say what you would do in another's shoes from YOUR perspective, but if you had inherited the same insecurities, weaknesses, problems, and the same negative mentality, you would not be singing the same tune. There is no extraneous factor that would make your life turn out differently if you were placed in the same circumstances.

  • @xXPinkGoddessXx continue from last reply>> committing suicide in the masses. So Ian Curtis, a man who was presented with an opportunity of a lifetime throws it away because "he can't handle the pressure" i'll just say man up!

  • This video footage is priceless.

  • His dancing was sometimes epileptic seizures or his fighting them of , depending

  • He is absolutely genius! If he didn't die so young, Joy Division perhaps could be more successful than New Order

  • Comment removed

  • What the fuck is every fucker going on about with the dancing?? this is called 'soul' he believed, who gives a flying fuck how he danced, who gives a flying fuck about how ANYONE dances? you like it, YOU LIKE IT! end of...

  • @seedaripper2010 i know who gives a fuck, he certainly doesn't, thats the problem nowadays folk are so self conscious lol

  • He danced like a drunken retard, but damn was he a good songwriter.

  • Trent remade this song for The Crow soundtrack

  • Precious. Thank you Ian.

  • I think this video bears witness to an unshakeable human truth.

    .

If you kill yourself, then no matter how fucking ludicrous your dancing is, some people will somehow forget to laugh. I mean to say - 2:25 - WTF???

    .

Anyway Victoria Beckham, you know what you need to do now.

  • un plaisir de musique

  • Great footage. This band really set the foundation for cutting edge rock and were true pioneers. From the college radio of that time(late 70's/early 80's) becoming New Wave then changing to Alternative and now called Indie Rock. Ian Curtis was a brilliant lost soul. Fantastic voice and unique performer. Wish he was still with us but the music lives on.

  • @buddyguy88 Well said.

  • @buddyguy88 It's hard to believe that one band sparked a movement as powerful as this. I mean Nirvana changed the music scene from Glam to Grunge but without Joy Division, music today wouldn't be considered music for me.

  • @Kento617 and Joy Division was the gateway for like 90% of 80s and 90s GOOD music I.E Nirvana

  • @0mgwtfbbq21 Yeah man you're right on that. I just wish if Ian would have lived, this band would've been a greater band than to just have a cult following.

  • @buddyguy88 Well said, I was only 22 days old when Ian Curtis died so I grew up with the 80's 90's rock/metal scene. Joy Division were way before their time & inspired many bands from Indie to bands like Nine Inch Nails who covered this track for the first Crow film. One of my favourite Joy Division songs. Heart felt music will always continue to inspire. R.I.P. Ian, long live his legacy.

  • @buddyguy88 : Nice feedback, I agree! Ian was very innovative, a true original..The whole band was.

  • @buddyguy88 His dancing was the original break dancing

  • Ahhh... the perfect song :)

  • One of the greatest songs ever written,by one of the greatest bands ever to grace this earth.

  • haha at 3:53 looks like hes doin show me your genitals

  • I always listen to this when I'm drunk and feeling f*ck3d up.

    Yeah, like right now.

  • Erics,in Liverpool, the matinee performance, abar 40 people at the gig,bet you's wished you were there to see it,I'll always have that memory

  • Like poetry...Wait. it IS poetry!

  • my soul is dead long live the new flesh

  • I wish I could have seen them live.......

  • I always quite liked his dancing. It's always turned me on.

  • Whether its Joy Division or Nine Inch Nails this song is a killer.

  • Una joya

  • Watched a film about Ian Curtis and his rise to fame with Joy Division. He seemed like a very troubled bloke. Funny most famous musicians or actors usually are.

  • this si why the set was always so dark as the bright flashing lights would send ian into a fit.

  • i love this <3

  • intense as fuck...

  • FANTASTIC!!

  • Am I crazy or is the lead singer having an epileptic fit in the beginning of the song ?

  • @rquez He was actually epileptic, and had to be carried off the stage on some occasions, but he also did a very unique dance that was based on them.

  • @rquez no he always danced like that but he DID suffer from epilepsy and DID collapse on stage with fits but thats his normal dancing..

  • It's simply incredible-thank you for the Dead Souls!!

  • @TheRoseanne58

    jesus in everything

  • @cdog287 I love Ian - strange little cutie!!

  • to bad i was born in 1990

  • @Mike90j hi5:(
