Exchanges of ideas were going on between countries all the time as far back as in the antiquity. There's a story for the "fuck you gesture"
It's not to clear in my mind but it's about hunting.....if you got caught years ago they would cut off your two index fingers so you couldn't use a bow. So it didn't really used to be offensive just a gesture to rub it in that they still have their fingers. But these days it's a very casual disapproval I would call it. Say like I've just been told to cut my hair and that I look like a girl.....I then may stick two fingers up at the twats :D

Exchanges of ideas were going on between countries all the time as far back as in the antiquity. There were seminars and newspapers publishing discoveries and literally streams of letters exchanged between people conducting research in the same fields. All of that combined evolved ideas, thoughts and concepts that gave rise to what we have today.
