There is no actual sound in the clip of this prototype.
I guess other similar clip has no sound too.
I think it is because the Spinning motor is noisy. This could be the 'upside down version' of LeviTron toy, where the bottom black plate got wired motor spinning a magnet at high speed, and your little black plate on top does not need to spin, to float on it.
@aaronrocks87 Well that depends. My guess (a relatively educated guess) would be that this device uses lenz law for the levitation. This would mean that an electromagnet (mostlikely multiple electromagnets for stability) being powered on alternatingcurrent at a high frequency are inducing electric currents into a metal plate in the levitating disk. This causes a magnetic field to form around those currents repelling it away from the coil/coils. (Too long see next comment)
@aaronrocks87 If alternating current is being used in a coil on this device then yes it could induce current inside the circuitry of your Ipod or other electronic device which could damage it. However if I am wrong and the device does not use alternating current then the risk of damage is significantly lower but still present (though still highly unlikely).
It has been shown that a system consisting of two opposing magnets will have a saddle point in only two directions - the system is in unstable equilibrium along the third axis, thus no levitation. However, if one of the magnets is spun, the system is placed in a state of dynamic equilibrium. Usually, one sees this trick done with the floating magnet spinning. In this case, it is the magnetic in the base that is moving. Hence the visible cord attached to the base and the lack of sound.
Slightly more than that, I should think. A simple negative-negative would not hold a stable levitation that easily. Something more along the lines of flux pinning is probably responsible for this...
agreed: still i beleive this device to be simple, maybe 2 magnets in the levitation platform of opposing feilds, one center, one around rim - then one eletric magnet in the base to acheive a push and pull. maybe not i really have no clue how this device works yet, i think i will check into it...
where do i get on of those? if you put a bowl of dip on one and nachos on a nother that would be a cool idea for snacks when your buddies come over for the game :-D
Please do read the title and description before watching a movie.
Doing this clearly indicates that this is a Demonstration. demonstrating levitation of an object, taking in question if this were posible large-scale e.g. floating vehicles/trains.
Now I know that in lots of things to do with magnetism, there is some energy lost through magnetic induction (making a current). Does that apply to this? And about this limit... Even if it's done in a complete vacuum, the fastest you could get it going would be the speed of the driving force. You'd have to use light to get the edges up to that speed. What happens if the outer edges of the disk are going close to the speed of light, when the middle is hardly moving?
LOL the wise-ass comments on this page are hillarious. I particularly like the one about a "limit" to it's max speed and the Physics guy's comment about air resistance.
The cool thing about that is it's frictionless, so if you ran an electric motor like that to produce power if wouldn't have friction so you wouldn't need oil to lubricate a physical metal surface.
and the shape of the plane uses to lower the resistance but the wings need resistance to have lift, and on alan3djoseph's commend bout engines, you can use rocket power, they dont need resisitence from the outside --* points at space*
This looks like better technology than most of the magnetic levitation junk that on the market. I'd buy it if they sold it in the states and the price was right.
I don't think it's very light, on their website they put larger things on the floating thing like a small buddha statue. I guess they use some kind of enhanced polarity trick...

No, absolutely no friction because air resistance does not exist.
