  • Dude. U are making me so smart. I'm loving every minute of it.

  • good work

  • It's a rare and amazing thing when you get to take your passion and have a platform and audience to share it with. I know you're enjoying making these videos as much as we enjoy watching them. Keep it up brother. Much love.

  • i subbed. great work. you really love your music

  • I've always known this, but now I'm thoroughly convinced that if James Brown never existed, the all of us would of been f**cked out of nearly everything fly, funky and dope. Seriously though --- the dude AND HIS BAND were at the center of the musical universe.

  • dj y u look like u gotta go to the bathroom lol

  • I love you for this man! you really helped a learning musician out!

  • dilla dilla dilla beats beats beats

  • This is cool!

  • Hey DJ Funktuall - awesome posts. Funky Drummer was sampled by UK band The Stone Roses for their 1989 hit Fools Gold, which was then sampled by Run DMC for What's It All About. Circle of life huh?

  • pharcyde ruined their whaaaat??? you cant mean labcabincalifornia

but your videos are great dude, good job

  • haha. You're right labcabin is certainly better than I am saying here. Ditto De La Soul's future records. Guess I had beef cause Bizarre Ride and 3 Feet High are just sooooo so good.

  • before above the law, i believe producer tony-d of poor righteoous teachers fame used that for either PRT or a solo cat named YZ. this is deep east coast NJ/NY/CT knowledge.

  • Like your work and your enthousiasm, keep it up :)

  • This geeza cracks me up! he obviously loves his tunes! cheers for the samples man, the common one is excellent!. was that dj premier who done that?

  • Does anyone know the sample that is like: "Woah!" on beat 1 and "Yeah!" on beat 3???? It's driving me crazy, its used on loaaaadds of hip-hip.

Sick video by the way, safe

  • Classic James Brown break from 1972 in Think(about it) by JB´s female pair, Lyn Collins? Unbelievable song. Introduced earlier in this series. Can´t find a hip hop or a house classic from -89-91 which don´t have it.

  • Man, that "Hot Music" track by Soho, continues to be one of my favorite club joints. All you house music dancers know what I'm talking about! Loving all ur vids man. Love it!

  • ESOM samples "Love on a Two-Way Street" by The Moments

  • Yeah man! Above the Law were great, easily the best West Coast group at the time. Murder rap and especially Untouchable, so good.

  • Thank God I'm watching these now! 6 months in between this one and the last hahaha

I would have been pissed if I was waiting! LOL HAHAHA too cool man too cool

  • Give me the original songs over anything they have spawned, any day.

  • I think it was not a matter of Public Enemy or RUN DMC or LL but it was a matter of Hank & Keith Shocklee. Though I might be wrong.

    peace

  • above the law is the shit.

  • AWESOME VIDZ!!! As a producer i really appreciate all of em thanx brah

  • Ur The Man Great VIdeos

  • damn i never seen anyone enjoy samples as much as you! good shit bro stay up!

  • The lupe fiasco one actually gave me chills! Its not opera tho... but nonetheless, cool!

  • Incubus used the first sample in idiot box. It's fuckin' 4 in the am and I am still up thanks to your videos!!!!

  • The sixth sample has been used by Jay Z empire state of mind. You might want to update this. Great vids!

  • thanx a lot for doing these, man!,,,That SOHO joint came from a Wynton Marsalis record off of "J-Mood"

  • Love what you've got going here. You really are enjoying yourself and that's what I like to see. The anonymous hand at 9:51 scared me. I needed to watch again to see if my mind played tricks on me.

  • I wouldn't call that an opera record. There is a style of Latin music called Boleros. Generally they are more of the songs for slow dancing.

  • Oh dang! that lupe fiasco sample is from my MOM's generation back in the Philippines! once again dope stuff

  • Oh my goodness, i was tabbed out on facebook then you stopped the bobby caldwell sample. i got pretty upset hahaah

  • rad shirt bruh lol 8D.

Keep vibing man, lovin ur vids.

  • No lie....I liked Labcabincalifornia. Underrated in my opinion.

  • Totally agree. I preferred Labcabin. It was darker and the production was way tighter. Take drop, runnin' and something that means something- classic Dilla productions

  • Beethoven`s symphony no.5

so far, but trace for finding ....

  • u got allot of people hating f them u the man

  • Vicky Anderson was also sampled by puffy and lil kim for ...no time (for fake ones)!!

  • the light is an amazing song.

    Jdilla used that sample perfectly.

this guy is kindajokes too haha

  • Great Knowledge Bro...

  • diggin deep!!

  • I don't know if this was said already but SOHO "Hot Music" used a sample from a Wynton Marsalis song, I don't know which one though, but I heard the song on youtube.

  • i think its K O's - superstar

  • you got your music knowledge and i was listening to you, but when you talked about funky child i began to hear you (old school movie reference). chief rocka still had the illest beat, but funky child went retarded went the lyrics good call. i have not seen all your vids but i will check them if you check pete rock and cl smooth

  • didnt geto boys use that myra barnes (#9) sample too?

  • Don't know about the Geto Boys but I know Diddy used it for Lil' Kim's joint "No Time"

  • dam i miss the days when funky drummer used to get used.

  • Damn props Soundtrakk on finding that Celeste Legaspi sample....Damn that shit is so DOPE!!!!

  • That opera piece that Lupe Fiasco sampled was hot. Yet again, this was a great installment. Keep it up because we really appreciate this.

  • Once again I learned something from this clip, some very obscure samples used to make some very good records.

Who else but a Kanye West inspired artist in this case Lupe Fiasco would use the intro from a little known modern opera song as the basis for beat like "Kick Push" I reccomend that album by the way, very good without any weak tracks.

  • That Common 1 was produced J Dilla. Dilla 4 life.

  • you rock ! i love listen to original samples

  • I remember Kool G Rap using it the first time I heard it

  • whoot lupe!

  • Oh and thanks for the shout-out to Canadian rap man... k-os is da bomb.

  • k-os also sampled the Funky Drummer in "B-boy Stance"... he even includes the "ain't it" part from the "ain't it funky" line

  • This dude is sick for knowing about Above The Law! "Livin' Like Hustla's" stayed in my Kenwood Pullout back in the day... Lil' Kim's "No Time" used the same sample nicely as well.

  • There was a kid named YZ out of Trenton, NJ, who was the first to use this sample. He had a song called "Thinking of a Master Plan".

  • Gil Scott-Heron!! Throw a WAAAY back!!

I remember the original stuff, but I don't know the samples in the hip-hop context.

    This is cool, tho!

  • i spent so long just lookin at these videos than lookin at the actual songs and the music was so great to listen to

  • 6:46 The kanye fans just went WOAH!

haha funktuall! you say it, as I think it!

    great stuff, keep it up.

this is like im in a class and your my teacher!

    love this stuff

  • I think Rahzel used some of funky drummer in his 4 elements song, not so much the beat, but the small lyrical hits

  • My mother use to bumb the song " One Step" by Aretha Franklin. wow

  • geek-o!

  • My Youth, Yuh BAD NUH RASSS!! Respect

  • yo you knnow your music stilll.....respppectzz

  • I'm not sure but i think the song he's the dj im the rapper by dj jazzy jeff and the fresh prince samples the breakthrough but its sped up. the main beat.

  • ok i just went and listened to Aint I but i dont think Timbaland sampled the break beat.. but im pretty sure towards the end he samples at least PART of it

  • isnt that first james brown break beat used in Aint I by Jay Z?

  • #9 is more popular for being sampled for "No Time" by Lil' Kim feat. Diddy and "God Bless" by LL Cool J

  • Actually Ayatollah used the Aretha Franklin sample since he produced the song for Mos Def....Although the artists picks these tracks the producers that find these sample and chop 'em so crazy should be getting the credit don't U think!!

  • funlyuall how do u know all these samples u must love hip hop

  • whats song 2 couldnt make out what you said other than buddy something

  • the kick push sample was amazing
