Hey, I've seen some of your videos, and am planning on investing in D&D basics, so I figured I'd ask you. I've played before, but want to start DM'ing. I know I'll have to get the 3 books, but what else? I can make my own maps, I have the proper die, and plan on getting miniatures, but I feel like there's some kind of starter set, a cost-effective one, mind you, that I should get that will really bring my game together. Any thoughts?
@Quirk29 Look for the D&D Starter set. People call it the "Red Box" cause it's in a red box :). Has starter rules and a good starter adventure. Also has maps, tokens, and I believe it has dice too. It can be found in Barnes and Noble, Borders, and some Target and Walmart stores.
@lynxswift I had seen the Starter Set on Amazon, and after reading over it's contents, I'm not sure if it's what I'm looking for-- as I'd mentioned, I have dice, and can make my own maps; and tokens appear to be substitutes for miniatures.
Is there a starter-sort-of-set where I can get a dungeon master's screen, some skill cards, and maybe some basic miniatures? Something that includes a more advanced version of the starter set's materials?
@Quirk29 Nothing with miniatures currently. There is the D&D Essentials Dungeon Masters Kit, which comes with the new Essentials DM book, an adventure, a DM screen, and a bunch of tokens. The main rulebook now is the D&D Essentials Players Guide.
@lynxswift AND it sucks that they stopped making Dungeons and Dragons miniatures. WHY??? Im sure a fair amount of people played it, and it was one of the easiest versions of wargames. Personally, I dont really have enough time to play Warhammer 40k and the other really fancy games that take hours.
@SKTroop979 Check the DDM Guild fansite. They make downloadable cards for the new minis that are compatible with the miniatures game. It's run by the playtesters of the original game.
@SKTroop979 They don't make the miniatures. Wizards of the Coast does. The Guild only makes fan made stat cards for the latest miniatures, so you can use them in the old game besides the RPG.
So here's what I figured out about the colors. After opening two packs (one savage and one Dangerous) I got The troll king, and Graz'zt. The Troll is an elite monster so his card is purple. Graz'zt is a Solo so his card is blue. And the green ones are normal. As well as minions are red. :)
someone please help me. I am in my thirties, not playing anymore, but I remember buying the miniatures, UNPAINTED, some you had to super glue together. These came with no cards. Anyway, is there anywhere I can find these old ones? probably not, but any help at all would be great.
@fingersmcoy If you are talking about a Wizards of the Coast, D&D specific branded miniatures, then you are probably talking about their old Chainmail line. They were made of metal, and some you had to glue. Wizards of the Coast no longer make those. But, other companies currently make similar ones. Check out the Reaper Miniatures website or Games Workshop.
@lynxswift thanks alot. Those were probably the ones. I remember dragons that needed to be painted and glued together. I always enjoyed the painting process. I will check those websites out. Thanks again.
@aarondebay3 Here's some info on which game cards come in which boosters. The boosters with cards that can only be used for the D&D 4th Edition RPG are the latest ones: Dangerous Delves, Legendary Evils, and Savage Encounters.
Demonweb, Against the Giants, and Dungeon of Dread boosters are usable in the D&D Miniatures 2.0 skirmish rules. And everything from Desert of Desolation and backward in the skinny boxes have cards usable for the original D&D Miniatures 1.0 skirmish rules.
Starting with Dangerous Delves and onward, WOTC will no longer print skirmish , miniatures, warband stats for them. They will only come with cards with stats for the D&D RPG. Basically the skirmish minis game is cancelled :(. There is a group of the original playtesters though, that are making downloadable cards for the skirmish game, but they are unofficial. They are called the DDM Guild.
Yup, I wish they made encounter packs by creature type. Like for example, have a bunch of Orcs, with a leader, and maybe an orc shaman. Would be easie to make up advantures that way.
YES that would be awesome! I mean a pack just about orcs would make so much seens. And a pack just about undead (skeletons, necromancers) would be way better for campains and people playing.
Cool video, I always love watching unboxings of boosters. (Half the reason I buy boosters) But I will say Dangerous Delves for me was kind of a 'meh' set. I only got 3 packs and really got all the figures I wanted (I just bought singles of the rest) because some are just so bland. But I do plan on buying a case of legendary evils, that set looks amazing
Yup, the selections for the visible figures isn't the greatest. And the other minor figures are blah too. I finally saw pics of the new Legendary Evils set. The large figures are amazing :).
Ahhh I'll keep that in mind. I was away visiting my parents and didn't have my usual tripod and lighting setup, so just lazily winged it, cause I really wanted to see what figures I got :). Sorry for the inconvenience :(.
Sure, will do man. Sorry about the delay. Can't buy minis all the time, heheheheh. But, sure will try :). Does suck though about getting less figures per pack :(. It's like a stealth price increase.
Yup, the proportions are too human on this one, the older ones looked more feral too. This one looks like it's in gym clothes trying out for the Olympic archery team, heheheheheh.
Yup, I like the new packaging and being able to pick out which large figure I want :). Sucks though about getting less figures :(. But, it still only comes out to about $3 a figure at retail price. Cheaper if you can find a deal at cons or online :).
Have to thumbs down this video because of terrible camera focus. Couldn't see a freakin' thing.

@SKTroop979 I agree :(. With no pictures on the cards, it's very, very difficult to find the right card when you have a large collection :(.
