Most kids are savvy enough to figure out this is Max's imagination or dream or whatever. It's certainly nowhere near as scary or bad influence as Grimm's Fairy Tales, which were considered classics when I was a kid and had all manner of gruesome circumstances kids fell into. Like for example, Beauty and the Beast or Hansel and Gretel.

The humour lies in the quirkiness. There is nothing here that is witty per se, but this is very funny and amusing.
