Wow, for 1900 the special effects are pretty impressive! What film makers have achieved in 50 years since first inventing the idea of motion pictures almost puts us to shame.
Who uploaded this? I have a couple questions.. @ about 2-3 seconds in there are what seems like cursive letters flashed really quickly then at about 18 seconds there is a dark shadowy thing on the guy and it kinda looks like a finger print if u pause it.. Then at about 48-49 seconds there is like a flash across the screen at the bottom. Is there n e way u could slow it down and tell me wat it is thanks..
@vonzelljr About the cursive letters, it looks to be a tag of some sort (there is a border around the paper) Although I don't know why it was ripped. There were some numbers on it as well. It may have been added for effect, but I don't think it means anything.
Hasnt anyone noticed that silent might have been used as a metaphor, not just because we didnt have the technology to synchronize sound? Since there is no sound whatsoever, it must encourage people to use their imagination to find the plot. Idk, thoughts
Melies could pull a better film out of his diaper when he was a baby. Best Edison Film?? Well considering that Edison was a plagerizing old bastard...well then, maybe.
Cool, lots of camera tricks, obviously done by stopping the camera to make changes and then starting filming again. It was this technique that led to the discovery of animation. (when in one trick film, clouds hopped around on screen, another trick film, people and chairs flew in and out. It was then tried with stopping the camera to make changes to a doll's position, and then starting again, making the doll appear to m ove on its own.)
Actually I have since seen a few older ones including:
Santa Claus (1898) v=Dc3ei1tseeM
Buffalo Dance (1894) v=nuAWbtqa8Ls
Boxing Cats (1894) v=k52pLvVmmkU
Sandow (1898) v=HWM2ixqua3Y
And so on... there's a plethora of turn-of-the-century films on this site. You just have to find them. For instance, the 1910 Wizard of Oz and Frankenstein are on here. I recommend a film called The Mystic Swing (1900). It's actually pretty good.
A movie??? My popcorn hadn'd even popped in the microwave and it was over!

Didn't silent movies have, like every three minutes, a text or something? :P
MsAsianNinja 2 years ago
This long ago you really didn't need text or dialog. The motion picture was novelty enough.
