  • I had a Santa Cruz 12 fret D, the loudest guitar I ever heard. But then I found a 95 golden era D18 and a HD28 LSV and both are easier to play and tune better as the 12 fred did not intonate very well and the top was starting to belly out. I regret parting with the Cruz, but have 2 or 3 other guitars that are just great. I have seen Norman play that old guitar live on several ocasions and Nancy on that really old cello. What a sound!!!! Norman was my biggest influence for so many years.

  • Norman's D-18S is just the most kick ass sounding acoustic ever

I have a Gibson Advanced Jumbo, an amazing guitar, but Norman's D-18!!!!

  • this is one video it truly bothers me someone disliked!

  • *9* dislikes? Who the heck could dislike this??

  • @ThreeString some asshole :P

  • @ThreeString Idiots that don't understand music, probably rappers where they just talk and think its music.

  • @Gunner43056 And sample other people's music and tag it as their own. Never could figure that out.

  • Norman is the smoothest flatpicker round.

  • NORMAN IS THE MAN!

  • what is the name for that color sunburst?

  • @wammybarsolo21 amberburst. Martin did that a lot when the guitar was made in the early 30's

  • Gotta love hanging out here!

  • Nine people didn't like this? How the hell could someone not like this?

  • American music right there in a nutshell, it that was possible. Gorgeous.

  • Norman Blake has to be one of the best exponents of this music ever!

  • Jebus rice

  • I love it ..many thanks for the pleasure, I will be back..

  • see what good things can happen when you practise your scales?

  • Doc, Norman and Tony in no particular order.

  • Wow!!!!!

  • i was in a competition playing normans song randall collins not as good as him but still good and i was disqaulified for moving my mouth while i played made me mad

im 13 and i dont think thats fair because alot of great pickers do the same move there mouth great song!

  • @edisonphonographfan disqualified for moving your mouth? how can they do that

  • @flatpikinguitar

idk they did and i still dont understand it lol

  • i didnt know martins came with that headtsock

  • @44eelz , most older martins, especially nylons had a slotted headstock. some older and newer models alike also have them.

  • This can pick guitar better than 99.7% of all humans can do anything!

  • Definitely a legend of flatpicking.

  • I just adore the way in which the legendary Mr Blake's fingers so happily dance across those strings .. a master of his instrument .. and a joy to behold.

  • His guitar is an original d28vs 12th fret . martin started remaking them in 2004 labeled as hd28vs. however i havent seen any new ones with a sunburst finish.

  • that has to be like a d-28 from the 30's! these guy's where in the know man! back in the day!

  • thats a Martin

  • what model guitar is this? it's beautiful.

  • @Godsfaithfulservant That is a 1934 Gibson sunburst. A guitar Gibson said did not exist. It was made as a private guitar by one of the employees. The first sunburst logged by Gibson was 1936? or 1938. Needless to say Gibson wanted it badly. The story how Mr. Blake introduced it to the Gibson museum is outstanding.

  • @LCBlake706 Open your eyes and look again, that guitar is no Gibson you can see C.F.Martin on the damn thing it also has the Matin pick guard. Old yes Gibson no way

  • @46r11 Yea its A Martin

  • @Godsfaithfulservant It just has the notched head and odd shaped body. i've never seen the model before.

  • @Godsfaithfulservant VAI TOMA

  • 1:55 to 2:07 - not bad eh?

  • Yeah, those are archetypal Norman Blake licks.

  • Mr Blake puts so much into each note, a listener can't keep up.

  • his right hand is amazing, simply amazing!!!

  • He makes it look so easy, violin player is also top of the list

  • I think I'll watch it again

  • @kdevine321 me too :)

  • Norman - Tony - Doc - are mine also and in that order. wayne

  • Join the club :-)

  • @46r11 Doc is the first one

  • Best stuff!! Norman is a wonderful guitarist!!

  • Great song, great guitar player!

    I´m a Norman Blake fan now :)

    Thanks for posting.

  • Great pickin', great music, thanks for posting.

  • Norman Blake, Doc Watson, and Tony Rice. My six string heroes.

  • what he said...

  • Stark!! HIghfive!! lovely greetz from gernany!! Tanja&Wiljo ,)(.

  • very nice

  • There's a lot more to it than the label on the headstock. He uses a weird string combination: GHS Boomers (electric strings) with heavy strings on the E and A, mediums on the D and G, and lights on the B and E. That he is one of the cleanest pickers with one of the best right hands ever doesn't hurt.

  • i read somewhere (i think the flatpick guitar mag interview) that he also changes the position of his high E to cater to his playing better. the things you learn by playing for 60 years or so is kinda crazy.

  • Ijust love this guy, talent at its best.

  • Such a nice melody!

  • How on earth could you not like this music-?? Great talent - wayne

  • awesome picking and fiddling!

  • very good!!!

  • Harlington,

If you don't like this you have no soul and will probably be happy in hell.

  • I used to play rugby with the fiddle player.

  • That fiddle player never played rugby....I know because I am his daughter.

  • Hi, nice to meet you. I was only joking.

  • Authentic and inspirational!

  • amazing

  • ITS SO BUEATIFUL

  • very nice!!!!

  • Such a nice thing to hear him back then, and see his relaxed style. Wow, thanks for posting this.

  • Norman Blake played with the Tennessee Three and Bill Walker's orchestra during the broadcasting of Johnny Cash's TV show from 1969-1971. He was the regular rhythm guitarist to all performances backed by the band!

  • great. genius

  • never heard this guy before now, but I'll damn sure be hearin more. he can pick guitar!

  • Great job, love that bass playing from the cello,it is just like a doghouse bass.

Love all of the good pickers here.

  • He makes it look so easy. The old Matin sounds great except for a little buzz at times on the bass string. Wayne

  • wow - what a picker

  • good bass playing, excellent guitar, wonderful fiddle

  • I enjoyed your video. I think you did a good job on this song. Best Wishes, Wayne

  • wooooooooooooooo

that's how i feel everytime i hear this.

  • His guitar is an old 12 fret Martin(pre WW2). The newer Martins have the necks set at the 14th fret which gives them a louder tone. The old 12th fret neck have less tension on the strings and they get a woody tone.

  • Its a D 18, Blake is famous for his D 18....

  • D-18's do not have white binding. This guitar is an early 1930's D-28, probably circa 1934.

  • let me ask you...what kind of Martin is that? I'ts kinda cool... with the slotted headstock and everything...

  • Norman is one of my favorite all time flat pickers.....he has a gift

  • What do you mean by flatpicker?

  • he picks the strings of his guitar with a flatpick, also known as a plectrum. instead of his fingers, which is called fingerpicking. you should use wikipedia. type in "flatpicking" or "fingerpicking" and it will explain in detail. see chet atkins for fingerpicking.

  • theres also soft picks not much for pickin tho...

  • Does anybody know what album this constellation and music can be found on? Most records I´ve listened to with Blake is with solo guitar.

    Great stuff anyway.

  • You should check out the original version by the Delmore Brothers. Great stuff man, great stuff!

  • Wonderful stuff. It doesn't get any better than that, in my book!

  • ok, just blow me away with that one good job

  • same lineup as rounder records 'rising fawn ensemble' record -- please, someone tell them to repress that album. my vinyl is wearing out!

  • So, so nice. First, using a cello as a bass! Second, Norman Blake's flatpicking and voice. Third, James Bryan on fiddle. I had the great opportunity to enjoy a slow jam that he lead in Elkins, WV last year. He looks quite a bit older these days, but he hasn't lost his chops. Five stars to you all.

  • Sweet Stars in the sky

Your music sure lifts a guy

    Thank you Norman

    Thanks for posting

  • I live in Oregon. Does anyone know his tour schedule? I'd sacrifice a lot to go see him live. JarHaid

  • Hey! If you want a piedmont blues expeience, check out the group PIEDMONT PROJECT. There you get the stringband alternative. They have been said to "keep it real".

  • Ah caint git enuf of this. If you don't have it, get his "Live at McCabe's" It's #1 on my desert island list.

  • I'm going to go practice now. love it!!!

  • Pure art.

    What else?

  • Oh yes yes yes. What a picker.

    What a pleasure.

  • The singing didn't do alot for me, but the guitar playing was incredible

  • Really good stuff! Great guitar pickers would look at this and feel shamed. This is what the flattop guitar was made for...

  • This IS what is missing from so-called country music today!

  • Wow, an old hippie.

  • Funny, you got the "thumbs down" for that comment while Blake himself said he was considered counter-culture in Nashville because he and his buddy, John Hartford, were hippies and spoke very openly of their regular use of dried herbs. People who think Blake wasn't a hippie simply don't know anything about the man.

  • You sound great Norman. From John on Harding Place.Much LOVE and keep the train rollin'.

  • This video WILL NOT DOWNLOAD........

  • YAY, it works again!

  • Norman is the man.

  • Great stuff...reminds me of the old Exit/In days in Nashville

  • haha yea its changed a lot since then rofl.

  • Very impressive!

  • I've been A Blake-ist for more than a few years now, and this is actually the first time I've seen him play.I'd love to sit down and pick a tune or two with Norman. I play along on the stereo...but in person would really be something, man!

  • Hi, Nancy. :)

  • Breathtakingly Beautiful!

    We just love Norman.

    Thanks for posting.

  • It won't work for me

  • wow... i usually listen to deathmetal.. but man hes awsome.. love this music

  • 5 stars ***** The best............

  • OMFG! Ho is good!!!

  • Looks a little like Richard from a distance but it's not. Richard committed suicide in 1986, depriving the world of one of our greatest talents _ instrumentally but especially vocally.

  • thank God for my daddy, he introduced me to music, and he loved Norman. I love him too.

  • It's James Bryan, from (I think) Sand Mtn., Alabama, just across the state line from Rising Fawn/Sulfur Springs.

  • is that richard manuel on fiddle ???

  • Amazing... Norman has redifined what i know to be great music. He IS better than rock guitarists by far. I come back to my roots now and love his music more every day.

  • That is one wickid guitar.

  • This is a pleasant surprise, both d video and song. Also a big thanks to YouTube for getting me to know more of Blue Grass music, a very, very nice genre indeed.

  • I just love old Norman ; he is THE MAN!

  • great video, thanks a lot for sharing!

  • I got the Missouri Blues until he shows up at Peaceful Bend Winery in May.

    Great stuff.

    jkh

  • Wow--this is a fantastic recording. Apart from Norman being an amazing musician, the close-ups of his playing are great.

  • Thanks for sharing this!
