I had a Santa Cruz 12 fret D, the loudest guitar I ever heard. But then I found a 95 golden era D18 and a HD28 LSV and both are easier to play and tune better as the 12 fred did not intonate very well and the top was starting to belly out. I regret parting with the Cruz, but have 2 or 3 other guitars that are just great. I have seen Norman play that old guitar live on several ocasions and Nancy on that really old cello. What a sound!!!! Norman was my biggest influence for so many years.
i was in a competition playing normans song randall collins not as good as him but still good and i was disqaulified for moving my mouth while i played made me mad
im 13 and i dont think thats fair because alot of great pickers do the same move there mouth great song!
I just adore the way in which the legendary Mr Blake's fingers so happily dance across those strings .. a master of his instrument .. and a joy to behold.
His guitar is an original d28vs 12th fret . martin started remaking them in 2004 labeled as hd28vs. however i havent seen any new ones with a sunburst finish.
@Godsfaithfulservant That is a 1934 Gibson sunburst. A guitar Gibson said did not exist. It was made as a private guitar by one of the employees. The first sunburst logged by Gibson was 1936? or 1938. Needless to say Gibson wanted it badly. The story how Mr. Blake introduced it to the Gibson museum is outstanding.
@LCBlake706 Open your eyes and look again, that guitar is no Gibson you can see C.F.Martin on the damn thing it also has the Matin pick guard. Old yes Gibson no way
There's a lot more to it than the label on the headstock. He uses a weird string combination: GHS Boomers (electric strings) with heavy strings on the E and A, mediums on the D and G, and lights on the B and E. That he is one of the cleanest pickers with one of the best right hands ever doesn't hurt.
i read somewhere (i think the flatpick guitar mag interview) that he also changes the position of his high E to cater to his playing better. the things you learn by playing for 60 years or so is kinda crazy.
Norman Blake played with the Tennessee Three and Bill Walker's orchestra during the broadcasting of Johnny Cash's TV show from 1969-1971. He was the regular rhythm guitarist to all performances backed by the band!
His guitar is an old 12 fret Martin(pre WW2). The newer Martins have the necks set at the 14th fret which gives them a louder tone. The old 12th fret neck have less tension on the strings and they get a woody tone.
he picks the strings of his guitar with a flatpick, also known as a plectrum. instead of his fingers, which is called fingerpicking. you should use wikipedia. type in "flatpicking" or "fingerpicking" and it will explain in detail. see chet atkins for fingerpicking.
So, so nice. First, using a cello as a bass! Second, Norman Blake's flatpicking and voice. Third, James Bryan on fiddle. I had the great opportunity to enjoy a slow jam that he lead in Elkins, WV last year. He looks quite a bit older these days, but he hasn't lost his chops. Five stars to you all.
Hey! If you want a piedmont blues expeience, check out the group PIEDMONT PROJECT. There you get the stringband alternative. They have been said to "keep it real".
Funny, you got the "thumbs down" for that comment while Blake himself said he was considered counter-culture in Nashville because he and his buddy, John Hartford, were hippies and spoke very openly of their regular use of dried herbs. People who think Blake wasn't a hippie simply don't know anything about the man.
I've been A Blake-ist for more than a few years now, and this is actually the first time I've seen him play.I'd love to sit down and pick a tune or two with Norman. I play along on the stereo...but in person would really be something, man!
Looks a little like Richard from a distance but it's not. Richard committed suicide in 1986, depriving the world of one of our greatest talents _ instrumentally but especially vocally.
