  • Does it help to look up?

  • @aks73 When I fail on dumbbell presses I look up and it helps me get the last rep out for some reason.

  • @mjh34mjh34 When you look up, you lean back a bit and you get more pec recruitment. When this was an olympic lift, the lifters would lean back a lot because it makes it easier to lift heavier weight.

  • son of a b i have been doing this wrong for a month, i knew it 2 weeks ago when i wasn't going up in weight...

  • @DrewIsFail I have to disagree with this. As with several of his other vids too. I think you have to look at what you want to work. The position he's teaching looks more appropriate for the clean and jerk. His first "incorrect" position is where I stop. But that's because I WANT to work my upper upper chest/shoulder area, so I'm doing more of a front press, and that's where it should be. With his, I don't even know if that's safe for the shoulders. Maybe someone can add to this.

  • @thesix107 Rip isn't trying to work specific muscles, he is trying to coach for functional strength. When you hold something heavy over your head because you need to boost your brother up or something you're doing it the same way you would do an overhead press.

  • @bangbongbong what you've said is true, but i'd also add that rippetoe wouldn't teach it if it weren't safe

he's all about safety first, especially since he teaches so many beginners

  • you gotta shove 'em in to place.
